So a week ago while clicking the Steam icon in the taskbar, I notice that it's changed to it's "currently downloading" icon. I go to library, and see that Portal 2, which I had deleted a while ago to free up hard drive space, is in the process of downloading again. I stop it at 92% and curse the fact that Steam has just wasted 10GB (or thereabouts) of my download quota, but I don't really give it anymore thought.

Just now, I sit down at the computer and am greeted by a pop-up message telling me that Steam has finished downloading Borderlands. Again, I didn't initiate this, and it's doubly strange because Borderlands is already fully installed.

Anyone else having similar things happen? When it first happened with Portal 2, I told myself that my finger mist have slipped on the mouse when I was in the library last and I clicked on install without realizing, but that's obviously not it.

The "finished downloading" popup happens when you receive a patch and Borderlands was recently updated, so mystery explained there.

Not sure what happened with Portal 2 though. Did you delete Portal 2 through Steam using "Delete Local Content..."? Otherwise I think there was a recent patch to the source engine, might be related to that, but it's still odd.

Also don't believe the download sizes next to each game on the Downloads page. That's the total size for the game. The only way to gauge download sizes in Steam is at the top of the Downloads page, next to "TOTAL DOWNLOADED".

Yes that was how.
