Anyone else experiencing slow load times? Only PALGN is doing it. When I first click the link to get here, it takes like 2 minutes to load the Index page. Then probably another minute to show the posts since last visit. Then it's pretty random when opening threads. Some take 20 seconds, some take 2 minutes.

But seriously, it's been like this for, what, most of this year? Just something you have to deal with.

Yeah, it's always been pretty slow but I've never seen it this slow before. It's getting hard to browse and post now.
Can someone go down and throw some more memory into the server box?

Yeah, I didn't really notice it before, as i would click to go here, then go to another tab and read/go somewhere, then click back and it'd be good. But today I could read 35 Facebook updates before I even got to the Index.

I've got some old DDR1 stuff and some Athlons spare if that'd come in handy... _________________

I get the feeling that money is what's needed, rather than memory. It's not easy to afford a good server for a site as busy as this one. _________________

I've got a rat driven generator and a stack full of punch cards if we want to complete this upgrade. _________________

God damn, talk about first world problems.
I mean seriously, what is 2-3 minutes wait, go outside, socialise with people OFFLINE! It's like you are all sociopathic hermits who are afraid of human contact outside of an internet forum.
IRL you don't have to wait 2 minutes to get a response. It's less depressing for me when you talk offline.
But seriously now, I don't think we can honestly expect better performance from a server running on dial-up, it's doing much better than any of us expected, and it only costs $9.90 a month on Dodo.
I'm sure it's been discussed before, but donation system with benefit of VIP user titles and such and a donator hall of fame? _________________

It's true the slowness makes last year look high speed. But yeah the last few weeks it's got much slower.
Normally I can put up with the wait, but on the pc I'm getting server non-response error messages.
And IOS seems to hate palgn, half the time I get 'server has taken too long to respond' especially on the iPhone on 3G.
Can't say it wouldn't be nice to get faster again. _________________ http://bencadphotography.com/

Not going to lie but seemingly since Luke left this place has gone downhill as a gaming news/reviews website. Back in the day reviews came out a week before the game which generated traffic. There were decent competitions (like consoles and $5000 worth of games comps) which generated traffic. Exclusive interviews with decent developers which generated traffic. Game exchange generated traffic. etc etc. Easter Egg Hunt even generated traffic. I'm sure Luke wasn't behind all of these things, but after he left it seemed to disappear. James obviously was a huge loss as well since he ran the place.
Not that I'm not grateful for the job that the current guys are doing, the time and effort for little to no return, just definitely something I'm sure everyone has noticed (and I'm just stating the obvious) over the last couple of years and all of it the most obvious cause of the lack of a decent server which is the point of the topic. Almost seems as though the place is on its last legs. _________________

That was the golden age of PALGN, for sure. Which makes me wonder, maybe a reboot would be worth looking into. I mean, everyone does it, just look at DC!

ya know this could have something to do with the slower posting rate that people have been complaining about. More people getting bored and not bothering to post waiting for it to load. _________________

I'd love to be able to disagree with you but I can't...and that's the saddest thing about all of this. _________________

Luke was the worst thing to happen to this website since Mike, I'm sure all the old-timers can back me up on that. LONG LIVE JEREMY!
Site doesn't seem so bad right now though. It was backup night last night to be fair. _________________

I just waited ten minutes to post here on my lunch break, attempted to view new posts, server stopped responding, a reattempt resulted in a dropped cookie and thus no new posts since last visit, I click my username to view profile, 2 timeouts later and it loads, another minute or so and this thread finally loaded. Now In the meantime I had time to check emails, Facebook, 50 odd rss items, and the first few pages of reddit gaming ON MY PHONE! _________________

Yeah, I'm much more selective of what threads I'll open these days simply because I know that I'll have to wait so long to see the damned thing. It's pretty borked. _________________

I'm not sure I could even get outside and find someone to talk to in the 2-3 mins before the page loads - Mr 12139 posts in 3 years
Out of curiosity on the technical side... would purging any ancient/archived threads and a reboot help the server? (I assume it's a memory/disk issue) _________________
