Story is turning out to be surprisingly good..i'm about 42 hrs in. I like how they slowly reveal small snippets after each area without giving too much away. It's gotten to a point where i've been skipping alot of the side missions just to advance the story to see what happens. The only side missions i've really gone out of the way to completes are the one with the timer because they will go away after you advance the story to a certain point.

The music for Satorl Marsh at night is epic! Played most of that zone at night.

I'm not sure how I feel about Xenoblade just yet. It started out awesome with the Colony 9 events but I'm finding it a bit tedious at the moment exploring that giant Mine area "Central Pit". I hope it picks up a bit soon.

This game has to be the best RPG I have ever played, I'm now 100+ hours into the game and the story just gets more and more interesting as things go on. I absoloutely love the characters and the interactions between them. This is a game that just blows you away, the longer you play it and I so don't want it to end icon_smile.gif

100+ hours!? Just how long is this game? I'm currently 18 hours in and feel like I've barely touched the surface. I'm doing quests at the moment and exploring the rest of Bionis' Leg. I like the heart-to-heart conversations and they're fun to find.

The game has well over 100+ hours of content if you intend to do everything.

It's insane how much of my time has been consumed by this game so far...

Just reached Sword Valley and it's pretty cool. Pretty different to the other areas and there's some giant enemies to take down (the biggest I've seen so far). I've put a hell of a lot of hours into this and was sure I was overlevelled, but coming into this area, have struggled against some of the larger enemies. Maybe you're just supposed to avoid them icon_razz.gif

The story is unfolding nicely and the specifically animated action/dramatic scenes up to this point have been really stunning. Side quests seem to be drying up, but are worth looking for because they seem to be giving 'special' rewards occassionally. I don't mind missing out on items, but missing out on a character upgrade would be devastating.

That's exactly what I'm doing. The story is just so good that I simply want to keep progressing it to find out what's going to happen. I don't think a video game has ever done that for me. It feels like I'm very close to the end right now, I'd say at least 80% of the way (I'm at the Central Factory). I don't want it to end...

I just finished the Central Factory and now I'm sufficiently leveled to go back to all the previous zones and smash the uniques that chased me endlessly when I was level 10 for their beautiful Affinity Coins and Art Books.

Have to say, 7th is such a powerful character, I can't take myself to remove 7 from the party. Hardly use Shulk anymore, but his Monado Armour is serious cheese when it comes to cheapening difficult fights.

Long live the heropon.

I Finished it last night. The game wrapped things up quite nicely, but I wasn't as impressed with the main story line as many others appear to be, but I enjoyed the setting. I did almost all of the side quests. I probably enjoyed the side quests more than most did, as I liked the whole affinity chart thing.

There is a new game+ feature, which I won't be going anywhere near. I think going through the game once would be enough for almost everyone.

NoE is doing a 'Make Your Own Let's Play Video Contest'.

I don't think anyone from Australia can enter, but it's a neat thing the NoE are doing.

Well, loade it up tonight (had been putting it off due to a massive back-log) and curse those dolpin shots and condensed youtube videos. My game looks nothing near as good. The character models are blocky and the landscape is grainy, It seems like a story based WOW with fetch quests aplenty and the screen is cluttered with icons/menus and whilst the combat certainly has depth, it seems like controlled chaos at the moment (I think they have introduced new concepts to quickly (avoing FFXIII complaints?) and I'm a bit lost. I'm holding off on any genuine comments as I'm less than 2 hours in and I am still getting to grips with things. The characters (and voice acting) are likable enough and the story certainly has me wanting to see the next scene. : Samsung 26" http://www.samsung.com/au/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=&prd_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=LA26A450C1D (would a larger sceen help?)

EDIT: changing to 4:3 ratio has improved things a little (well at least matched youtube quality)

I'm 65 hours in and I still don't understand the gem crafting system or what the "B button" does in battle. I'm guessing it raises tension, whatever that does. It certainly doesn't explain things very well in the tutorials. I like the battle system though, unlike some games (FFXIII) I didn't get bored of it at any point. It may have helped that you get lots of rewards for fighting monsters so it felt worth it fighting every monster I see.

With the quests, I only did a fraction of them and still found myself overleveled. The game never really posed any difficulty once you get a certain party member that has healing arts. The story was so good that I didn't feel compelled to stay in one place for too long so I could see what happens next.

Pressing B within the right time period raises initial tension. All crystals have a varying amount of values/purity, eg. 70% Strength, 20% Agility. You can make a Strength gem if you can bring it's value to at least 100% through crafting. If you can raise the value to over 200% through crafting it'll gain another level, so if you crafted level 3 crystals you'd get a rank 4 Strength gem instead of one that is rank 3. The green bar that fills up over time has a number above it which determines how many unsuccessful attempts can be salvaged and used at a later attempt.

I've been intentionally crafting to fail so as to try and increase my chances of reaching HEAT status and "HQ'ing" or just making better quality gems. So when I can I'll round up crystals with low values (eg. 1-40%) and craft them knowing they won't reach 100%. I'll repeat this until I get their values to around 80-90% then I'll stack them with similar crystals, eg. 85% Strength and 92% Strength. Right off the bat I'll start off with a 177% value and have a much better chance of getting to 200%/HEAT and getting a higher quality gem to further boost my stats.

Hopefully that makes a bit of sense. The best thing to do is experiment with junk crystals for yourself.

What's the gentle, strong flame stuff mean? That's the part that really has me stumped. And what's tension exactly, increases damage?

I think once I get my head around it, xenoblades combat will solve my biggest problem with FFXII's system:

I really liked the battle system of FFXIII - its only real fault was a lack of postioning http://palgn.com.au/viewtopic.php?p=921897&highlight=#921897

I don't really have an answer for the former. At a guess I'd probably say that certain crystals/stats benefit from different types of flame, though I don't know of any way to manipulate which flame is primarily used. I personally use Dunban/Shulk because their affinity is maxed and I get party boosts presumably from Shulk's good affinity level with everyone in my game. I can't find any comprehensive guide about anything other than a walkthrough for the game which makes trying to understand some gameplay features a little more difficult.

Regarding tension, it seems to raise damage, accuracy and the chance of landing a critical hit. Every time I've suffered from low tension I miss almost every attack that it's pointless to use any ability in such a state.

Yeah, with gem crafting I was like "WTF??" at first as well, so I just decided to keep playing around with it until I eventually understood it. So:

Gentle flame - raises that green vertical bar (name escapes me at the moment), which affects how many 'leftovers' you can take.

eg. let's say you start with these three properties after the crystal combination:

Agility Up 107
Speed Up 20
HP Up 17

and after the crafting process, you end up with these numbers:

Agility Up 117
Speed Up 26
HP Up 31

Ability Up becomes a gem which you can equip, since it is over 100. Now, if the green bar is one, then you can choose to take EITHER Speed Up or HP Up, it'll be in a glass which you can use for crafting later. The other property will be discarded, so the 'leftover' will be lost. If the green bar is two, however, then you can take BOTH Speed Up and HP Up as glasses to be used later.

Medium flame - increases all properties by a little bit during crafting

Strong flame - increases one property by a fair amount during crafting

All characters are able to use ALL three flames, but they may use certain types more than others. This is what Strong/Average/Weak indicates.

Hope that made some kind of sense...

You're welcome! One thing I regret while playing Star Ocean 3 was not learning how Item Creation worked (that, and not using Maria :/), so I didn't want the same thing to happen here.

If you pay attention to the flame type each turn, and also look at what's happening to the attributes/green bar at the same time, you should be able to figure out what's going on. Soap of Death also mentioned some very insightful things which I didn't know before (ie getting to >200% increases the rank). Hurray for combined knowledge! *affinity increase*

The simplest way to craft is through the bro team of Shulk/Reyn (if you want to make high quality gems due to Shulk's increased Fever state and Reyn's higher chance of Strong flame), and to use Riki as the Engineer for cylinders because he is horrid for anything but Gentle flames.

In addition, there is also Mega Heat (300%) in addition to Heat when crafting, which basically gives you the highest attribute gem of the next rank AND a duplicate of it.

And as the above posters said, tension simply affects accuracy and critical hit chance. Damaging high armour targets with physical attacks like elementals will lower your tension as well as missing or being affected by status ailments. So it is in your best interest to always get the Burst Affinity, in addition to filling the party gauge.

Currently level 99 and still going around doing quests.
