So my PS3 won’t play blu-ray movies anymore. Everything else is cool – no issues playing games or dvd’s, but now every blu-ray seeks for a while and then makes a noise like it’s about to eject but doesn’t. Anyone have similar issues or have possible solutions? I’ve had it for more than a year so repair is not an option, what i’m after is a “Duh, you need to do this” response or an easy fix. I have a feeling i might be out of luck though...

Any help is much appreciated.

i was having a problem with blu-ray's freezing, what i read was to do a "restore file system" and this has fixed my problem for a month so far now. and apparently it has worked for similar cases to yours.
so to do this (copy and paste from someone else)

To access it, while the PS3 is in standby, hold the power button like you are doing a reset, but keep holding it down until there are two beeps, and you then can access it.

and make sure you select option 3. Restore File System

also make sure you back up everything else up on to an external hdd, just incase you lose everything (i didnt when i did it, but better to be safe)

but basically this is to fix any corrupted files in the system, and from what i have read the blu-ray files on the system do get corrupted and this causing problems with the playback or not reading, but thats only if that is the problem.
otherwise you have to get someone to fix it (sony, or someone who knows something about the hardware)

John, you’re a legend. That’s the sort of stuff i’m looking for. I’ll give it a shot and let you know how it goes. What’s the deal with backing up save files and stuff – can i use any USB flash drive? Can i back up games downloaded from PSN or is it just saves? Cheers mate.

is you do a system backup it backs up everything, saves, game data, downloaded games, settings, etc.
best to do it with an external hdd (one large enough to store everything)
to do it.
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/backuputility.htm

always good to do this every now and again just incase something happens anyway.
