I've been trying to log on for the past two days and I'm always getting an error message. Is this widespread and any reason for this? Seems very strange that the entire Playstation Network would just go offline for a whole two days and counting.

Yes and don't know.
Official Australian Playstation site. The network status indicator on the top right shows it is down.
Also, there's a new on the main site (also appears on the US Playstation blog)

I know it has been playing up last weekend, didn't know it was going to be this long though _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

Fark Anonymous whether they are behind this latest outage or not.
This is farking ridiculous. I can't play my SSFIV the only game I have in my library because of this. Couldn't buy Portal 2 or OFP as I didn't have time.
Ever since these clowns first attacked PSN a few weeks back I now can't automatically sign in to PSN. Have to keep retrying till it signs in.
Noone cares about their agenda. Leave us alone to enjoy our games for farksake.

Yeah for me it's been down since something like 3pm yesterday.
Different people get different error codes/results. When I try to sign in it immediately says I am signed out without signing in, in the first place. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

I don't think this is anonymous' doing. As much as I disagree with their stance and their rather feeble attempts thus far, they have stated they wouldn't attack the PSN, expecially after the massive backlash they received whilst attempting to bring it down the first time.
I've read rumours that someone found(or hacked, not sure...) an exploit on the PSN which allowed them to download everything for free so Sony are taking it down whilst they fixed it. But that doesn't make a lot of sense, so take that with a grain of salt. _________________

If this is another DDOS attack, I hope they get caught and raped by the law.... It's ruining my time and enjoyment as a gamer. _________________

Well at least I'm not the only one. Absolutely astonishing that a massive network like the PSN can simply go down unexpectedly. That's like Google crashing! Hopefully we'll all be back online soon because I'm having withdrawals too.

Since the only game I'm playing at the moment is Yakuza 4 this outage doesn't affect me that much. _________________

Apparantly something went wrong in Japan and that's what's causing the issue. If this is true, I'm surprised PSN has been fine since their whole Triple-Disaster started... _________________

I've finally got some free time to play on the PSN and it's not working. Damn it!
My friend from Hong Kong messaged me on FB to ask if PSN was down in Australia too, which it is, so I'm guessing it's not only Australia that's being affected. _________________

My best guess is that one of their primary nodes that relays all the traffic across the world has crashed or is suffering a major hardware fault. Thing is, crashes usually are fixed by a few reboots and 99% of the time the company has a backup node system that they can redirect traffic through, so it could be that it's suffering from a massive Direct Denial of Service attack, aka a DDoS.
Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if it was some stray anon kids launching a massive DDoS on one of their nodes/servers which is causing such horrendous levels of down time. It's too coincidental for Anon to be ranting about how they'll get Sony for protecting their intellectual property, and then bam, this happens on a long weekend.
Really goes to show that blackhat hackers never really do any good. They just make things worse. _________________

I wonder if perhaps PSN uses the Amazon cloud services? That's also down right now and it seems a mighty coincidence. _________________

Pissing me off quite abit; wanted to peruse the store over the last few days. Eyeing off a new potential purchase so just ended up ordering it from Ozgameshop instead and now I'm forced to wait even longer (yay).
I did find this quite laughworthy, though. _________________

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.
*^ so sony shut down PSN because of hackers.

Funny thing is I haven't used my PS3 in awhile since I moved so this hasn't affected me at all. Still, it sucks. _________________

Fucking anonymous... even if they're not claiming responsibility, it IS their fault this shit is happening. Even assuming whoever claims to be Anonymous is doing nothing at the moment, they announce everything publicly and have heaps of followers, any of whom could be attacking stuff Anonymous don't like, and probably are. So much for playing the Co-op Portal 2 campaign this weekend.

Way to piss off millions of people and make Sony look like the victims, hackers.
Also, I find it pathetic that Anonymous plan to attack Sony when PSN is back online. These guys need to get over themselves, they aren't helping anybody. Sony reached an out-of-court settlement with geohot, he basically got a slap on the wrist and agreed to no more PS3 hacking.
Oh, but we're all taking it up the a$$ because Sony removed otherOS and we're not complaining?? Who gives a f**k about otherOS? If that's really why you bought a PS3, just sell the damn thing and use the money to build a cheap computer. Run linux on that.
Retards.

Two days ago, SONY said they had a problem and it wasn't hackers...now that the problem isn't fixed, it's hackers? _________________

I kinda care about it! . Back when otherOS was around, the Comp Sci student in me was fascinated with what people could have done with the PS3 since having multiple combined make it a cheap Supercomputer. It was sad to see it gone but then that's life.
However, how many that are attacking really does care about running otherOS? I am disappointed there are people out there who thinks attacking is the way to get the message across. We have to suffer from people like these _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"
