Hey All,
Just wanted to know how everyone feels about Retro Studios. I think they have filled the hole Rare left in Nintendo when they got bought by Microsoft.
They have produced some fine games with Metroid Prime 1 and 2. And expect future games to be even better.

What other games have retro studios produced? I can remember Rareware producing the Donkey Kong series, and Conker the Squirrel.

afaik only the Metroid Primes were released, but they also began a game called Raven Blade

Rare also did some other games on SNES, GBC and N64 including Goldeneye, which is one of the must have N64 games. Didn't they also do Perfect Dark as well?

They're two completely different developers, I don't really see how you could compare the two though. They developer their games in two different and unique ways.
Retro Studios are a very talented bunch, and it's obvious they just didn't get lucky with Metroid Prime, since they made an even better sequel to it. I've heard that Retro Studios are hard at work on their next title at the moment, although it's still hard to tell what that game may be. Metroid Prime sequel or even finally finishing the mysterious 'Raven Blade' title.
I still find Rare a better developer though, since they've just got a larger library and variety of games compared to Retro Studios.

I love Rare. They're one of my favourite developers, up with Nintendo's in-house studios (EAD, HAL, IS, etc.).
Retro are also an amazing developer. I didn't see the fuss with Metroid Prime, but Metroid Prime 2 is a downright jaw-dropping game. They don't have a back catalogue of games as extensive as Rare/Ultimate, but the two games they have released have been critically acclaimed and a lot of fun.

There would only be a hole to fill if Rare went bankrupt or stopped developing games. Because they're still making games, no company can replace them. No company can replace them anyway.
Retro are Nintendo's best second-party developer now - the two Metroid games prove that. Now that they are out of the way, here's hoping development continues on this Raven Blade title. If the Prime games are anything to go by, it'll also be an absolute masterpiece of a title.

That's like comparing Brad Fittler with Sonny-Bill Williams (FYI they are Rugby League players Fittler has retired, Williams is considered to be a future legend).
I don't think they are shaping up to be the new Rare either because atm all they've made are Metroid games. Rare made Adventure, Action, Beat em ups, Puzzle, Racing and Shoot em ups.

Yeah but Rare have been around long enough to try other genres. Retro wanted to complete Raven Blade after the original Metroid Prime but Nintendo wanted the sequel and here we have it. Now that Echoes is out of the way, we can definitely see if Retro are indeed the brilliant company everyone claims they are with the release of Raven Blade. (or whatever game they're doing now)
