I'm not very far into The Witcher 2 but I was immediately put off by the way it handled the menus. Accessing the character development screen, the map or the journal involves pausing the game basically. I prefer if it was handled in real game time where you could simply bring up a small menu or map. Maybe it was because of the Xbox 360 controller but going through the menus felt clunky and awkward too.
Also there was too much text in the journal. I want to read up on the story events and characters because it goes more in depth but spending 30 minutes reading it all isn't exactly a fun thing to do in a video game.

I just bought a new laptop, is a Geforce GT520M enough to run this game? >_> _________________

According to this review it seems to run most games pretty well at low settings. I'd say low-medium settings will give you a relatively smooth experience.

You can play it but you'll just have to turn down the settings. Trust me it'll probably look better than the 360 version and run smoother too. Most console games are capped at 30FPS and have trouble just maintaining that FPS at a consistent rate, not to mention they run in sub-HD 1280x720 with no AA.

Hard playthrough wrapped up, and I think I've hit the point where I'm done with the game for awhile.
Amazing experience to be sure and a must play for any RPG fan, but a flawed masterpiece through and through. Many areas of the game are still in need of a lot of work. Combat is especially guilty of half arsed execution, and Chapter 3 is really only half there. Its testimate to how good the overall package is that even with its flaws its still one of the best games to be released this year and worth every cent, but a lot of work still needs to be done to really hit the perfect formula.
If we're lucky enough to score a third game, and I think we will be, hopefully CDP use this as a template and polish from there, because they can we'll be in for a treat.
The Witcher 2 gets an 8/10 from Jarrod. _________________

I dont think I have the gall for Insane. Combat has too many janky points for me to torture myself. Maybe when I'm feeling exceptionally mascacistic.
As for hours, honestly? 20 - 30 maybe? I'm really not sure, and I dont recall there being any hour counter on the save file. Also depends on how many side quests you do, like all RPGs.
But the thing with The Witcher 2 is one play through is not enough. There's a big choice at the end of Chapter 1 which dictates the path you'll take for the following chapters. Playthough through one of those paths only tells you one side of the story. There's so many awesome reveals and new info when you take the other, and is absolutely essential if you want to make the most of the game. _________________

Patch is out, and has apparently stuffed the graphics for a lot of people. _________________

Read a rumour/teaser that they are working on a major 2.0 patch similar to the Enhanced Edition of Witcher 1. No details of what it will include / change yet though.
Still haven't gone back to finish this game, made it to Act 3 and then got distracted by other games. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Act 3 is the last and is also very, very short, so you might as well push through.
2.0 is indeed true. It includes some score based arena mode that sounds pretty neat, a new 'dark mode' which offers the difficulty of insane but with the ability to save and a hoast of 'dark themed' weapons and armor, a new tutorial system to ease players into the game, and a host of other gameplay changes they haven't specified.
Its due in September. _________________

I'm interested in playing this game, but only if I can run it on the high settings. I'm wondering, will my current PC be good enough to do it?
I'm running an AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 255 Processor at 3.1 GHz
4GB of RAM
ATI Radeon HD 5600 Series with 1GB of dedicated RAM
I think I'm pretty close to the reccomended requirements... _________________

You'll be able to run it but it'll struggle on high settings. I'd say low-medium settings will run decently. The 56xx is a low end card and The Witcher 2 would benefit greatly from a quad core CPU.

Thanks, it's good to know where I stand. I'm thinking of asking for a more powerful graphics card for my birthday next month, can you recommend a good one? A new CPU will probably be too pricey/bothersome to install. _________________

You could get an AMD Phenom II X4 955. It's a good quad core CPU for gaming and only costs around $120.
This chart shows how all current gen video cards perform on the ultra spec at 1680x1050. The 6850 would be the best value card to run it at that setting. They cost around $160 I think. Alternatively you could track down a 5850 (basically the equivalent to the 6850) second hand for around $140.

CPUs are a bit of a pain to install though, you have to mess with your Windows installation. I'd like to keep the process simple. _________________

The installation process is easy. You just put the CPU in then mount the fan and you're done. It can be done inside the case. As far as I know you don't have to do anything software wise, you might just need to reactivate your Windows key but I thought that was only if you changed the motherboard.
But the video card will still give you a considerable increase even with your current CPU.

Windows usually needs reactivating after a major hardware change.
We're talking a combination of CPU, motherboard or hard disk drives, a new CPU and graphics card shouldn't require it.
If you do need to reactivate, it's just a matter of calling Microsoft support, then telling them you upgraded your PC, and that it is your only Windows PC. _________________

I gather that you think an updated CPU would make more of an improvement though, right? I didn't know that it was only replacing the motherboard that messes things up, I might be up for changing my CPU in that case.
Edit: Thanks, A13x, that makes sense. _________________

The video card will give you the biggest increase without a doubt but the CPU will be holding it back somewhat. If you had to choose one then go for the video card. But if your budget can allow it then an AMD 955 and 6850 video card would be a pretty solid gaming build in my opinion and you've spent less than $300. The Athlon II X2 255 and Phenom II X4 955 both use the AM3 socket so there's no need to replace your motherboard.

Sounds good! Getting both would be pretty awesome, but I guess I'll see how I go. I wonder if they'd use much more power? Hopefully I wouldn't have to get a new PSU as well. _________________
