The first race weekend of 2011 Formula One Season is set to start on Friday at Albert Park Grand Prix Circuit in Melbourne.
I know there are some F1 fans here so I was wondering if anyone excited or looking forward to this season. I just started watching F1 myself so I'm looking forward to it. Is anyone at PALGN going to be in the grand stands?
Also, any favorites for the Driver's or Constructor's Championships? I'm guessing the general favorite here is still Mark Webber, but as for constructors I'm not sure. I'm a McLaren fan, so I'm obviously rooting for Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. However, I'd love to see Rubens Barrichello get a championship before he retires. I'm hoping Kamui Kobayashi can net himself a win as well. I am sad that Robert Kubica will be missing most of (maybe the entire) the 2011 season due to the injury he sustained in a rally accident roughly a month ago.
I've been reading up on testing reports and apparently the Mercedes GP car is pretty good and that the adjustable rear wing is working better than the Red Bull's and Ferrari's (please correct me if I'm wrong). In addition, Michael Schumacher and Vitaly Petrov overall have been posting the fastest times in testing. Regarding Schumi, he definitely has enough Championships, but I'd like to see him on the podium a few times this season and at least get one win. _________________

Craig Lowndes and Jensen Button swapped cars at Bathurst the other day. here's the results.
Watching the F1 car go down Conrod is a sight to behold. _________________ Twitter | XBL: Tamaaya | PSN: stormo | GameCentre/Steam: StorminNorman

Webber fastest in Practice 1. Not that Practice 1 means that much, still promising I guess. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Off to Albert Park in about an hour. I wasn't all that excited about this season up until about a week ago but the hype has kicked into high gear since then. These new Pirelli tyres sound like they'll add a lot of flavour to the tempo of the race. We'll see how that pans out tomorrow...
Fingers crossed for a Webber pole/win this weekend! _________________

Vettel is a c**k. I hope he crashes. Would love Webber to take in 1st, could bring bigger things for the F1 in Melbourne. _________________

Vettel's an amazing driver. He earned that pole. I have no idea how he managed to snatch almost eight tenths off second place. Everyone in the crowd was stunned.
Highlight of the day though was Sutil's spin. Happened right in front of us. The crowd went nuts and applauded him on his return lap _________________

Damn, that race was dominated by Vettel. He had as high 12 seconds over Hamilton and about 30 seconds over Petrov. The race was really good and surprising. Despite Hamilton's McLaren getting damaged, he kept his position and kept a good pace throughout the race. He even knocked a few seconds off Vettel for a little bit. I was really glad to see Petrov earn his first career podium. The Lotus Renault looks really promising and I think Petrov could be a contender with that car. Many speculate Kubica would definitely do better, but I don't think it would be right to take the piss out of Petrov.
The biggest surprise was Sergio Perez. He did the entire grand prix with only one pit stop. That's really something considering those Pirelli tyres seem to wear out more quickly compared to the Bridgestones. _________________

Were you sitting in Fangio?
That spin was almost exactly like what he did in front of us at Suzuka last year, coming out of 130R.
I was sitting in Brabham on Friday (turn 1/2), Clark on Saturday (turn 9/10) and Jones on Sunday (opposite side of turn 1/2). I've got a stack of photos, some I'm quite proud of so I'll have to sort through them and upload some soon. _________________

Please do!
I just read an article in which Alonso completely takes the piss out of Petrov's first podium. He still seems to be bitter about Abu Dhabi. Zero sportsmanship. ><

Nope, Webber. He was back on line by the time he hit Fangio. Didn't know you were at qualifying Spanca. I'd have said hi :)
Looking forward to this stage. Rain has been forecast for quali and the race... excellent. _________________

I was there Thursday-Sunday, in Fangio, Brabham, Clark and Jones respectively (although we never actually went to our seats on Thursday, just the behind-the-scenes stuff).
Can't wait for tomorrow's race. MW is looking good!
I'm thinking Malaysia might be on the cards for next year. With the right wheeling and dealing, you can do the whole trip (flights, accommodation, grandstand seats) for ~$800. _________________

Damn, that was a close battle for pole position. Same top 5 as Australia, but Vettel just barely stole pole from Hamilton. Dang it. _________________

Shame about Webber's car today, but still a great drive to bag the points for 4th place. He's still in a good spot for the championship. Vettel is miles ahead on 50, then Button 26, Hamilton 24, Webber 22, Alonso 20. _________________

Man, Petrov flew. haha
The podium was the same as Australia in terms of teams. Disappointing race for Hamilton though. He was really closing in on Vettel knocking 6/10 of a second from him with each lap, but pitting way too early ruined his race as he really lost grip and was forced to make another pit stop with only a few laps left after going off the track. I was surprised they had Lewis pit so early. I thought they would let him close the gap to about a second or at least overtake Vettel before getting into the pits.
Definitely don't want Vettel to win the next race. I'd prefer if he DNF'd and McLaren gets a one-two finish. However, it doesn't seem to likely as Vettel just seems unstoppable right now. Even with KERS, hes been racing really well as much as I hate to admit it. _________________

Killer drive from Webber. His pass on Massa was the move of the day. No KERS, just skill. Great battle between him and Koba early in the race also. Great to watch.
Looks like these tyres are starting to pay off, although the amount of debris left on the road was a bit ridiculous... that was tyre debris right?
Btw, Hamilton and Alonso penalized for collision. Don't even remember that happening... _________________

^was about 3/4 through the race, it ripped part of Alonzos front wing off which he replaced immediatly. Hamiltons car was apparently slightly damaged too, but that was probably more an excuse He was struggling all day, was nice of him to over shoot that corner and let Webber through
That Petrov jump was awesome haha. He got some sweet air, surprised the car held together when it landed.
Crappy start by Webber but he did well to get back to 4th (and almost 3rd). _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Webber was a bit unlucky, really, having no KERS off the line killed his whole day. With a drive like that, a good start probably would have meant a race victory. Oh well. If Vettel crashes out of the next race, the championship will be close again.

It didn't! You saw the steering wheel come off in his hands when he landed right? That could have ended really badly.

Yes that was marbles of rubber. Melbourne was the same after the race. They say these sets of tyres shed 4kg of rubber, so if you say a driver is doing 3 stops, that's 4 sets of tyres, 48kg/driver. That's 1152kg of rubber for the race (assuming all drivers finished)! _________________

Hopefully Webber takes out the next race, if not Jenson. Love McLaren, dislike Hamilton. But gotta support the Aussie in with a shot.
If only ONE HD would ditch the excess number of ad's as well as Greg Rust. We have Coulthard and Brundle, we don't care what you think Rusty. _________________
