This was 1987 so i have probably had a bit of a head start.

And to think... could have been a guy that handed you a tape with some early Run DMC, LL Cool J, Beastie Boys and Public Enemy... may have been a different world right about now.

man talking about metal music you like always seems so intimidating. I swear metal fans are the most judgmental music fans. Hell I'm not even sure what music counts as metal anymore.

I used to listen to a lot of Apocalyptica, Opeth, Anathema etc but now days I'm more a hip-hop guy (although I'm also getting heavy into Dubstep)

You are a Hip Hop guy?

"Now we can share everything!"

On topic: I have Apocalyptica albums on my iPod. Does this mean I am down with the metal heads?

Lots of bands that I've heard of, and a few i haven't. Which is the main reason I made this thread.

I'm more into the Death Metal side, but I pretty much like it all. The exception being Black Metal like Burzum that I don't like, but Black Metal like Dimmu Borgir i really love.

My top 5 albums would be:

5. A Perfect Circle - 13th Step
4. Arch Enemy - Black Earth
3. In Flames - Soundtrack to your Escape
2. Otep - The Ascension
1. Dethklok - Deth Album II

Getting there, I was going through my CD wallet in my car the other day and realized I have more hip-hop in there then anything else.

Aye, I got 7a3, Tougher than Leather, Straight outta Compton, Paid in Full etc. Still prefered metal. I Still like some old hip hop but prefer old Electro - Hashim, Sa-fire, Newcleus, Afrika B, Warp 9 etc. Basically Sunnyview records, Cutting Records and Tommy Boy FTW!!

Funnily enough, Ghost Reveries is a good contender for my least favourite Opeth album. My Arms, Your Hearse is my favourite by a mile.

Yeah the twats like on encyclopedia metallum are elitist dicks that only like stuff that is just rwarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr all the way through. I am too old to give a shit anymore about that, a lot of the albums i love you sort of had to be there for.....back then there wasnt eleventy billion metal bands either so you really had time to consider each release and more on its own merits, rather than going, oh that is a shit version of such and such.

@jarrod they dont really do much for me apart from that one, why, before metal i was big big big early 80's kid, i like a lot of thhings that give off a sort of 80's vibe if that makes sense, and ghost reveries is one of them......also head like a hole.

@theory i was a huge fan of license to ill, and again, i will listen to 80's vibed stuff like run dmc and not vomit, but i stick to electro now (as in sounds like c64 music elecro, not that shit on triple j they call electro)....and rock steady crew.

Yeah I can totally see where you're coming from. Ghost Reveries single handedly attracted a new group of people to Opeth because of its different sound. I do like it, but I like the more death/black metal stuff like My Arms, Your Hears.

Watershed was a great too.

I like my arms your hearse next, but i cant dig watershed....i like the first song and the riff that leads into the first verse of the second song, but after that, dude from arch enema is a good guitarist, but very metal...

He is a great guitarist. I reckon he has told hold himself back with Opeth. It's good that he does. Opeth deserve classy, thoughtful leads, not shred.

Oh shit I forgot - Pantera - Cowboys from Hell. Man I flogged that to death in 1991/92

I haven't liked anything of Dimmu Borgir's stuff since Death Cult Armageddon. It's okay, but for some reason I really prefer (cringe) their older stuff (oh god I'm sorry).

I don't get the whole elitist metal thing. But then again, I haven't spent time with elitists over the last decade. A good friend of mine from Krome (currently at Sidhe in NZ) co-owns Obsidian Records, a local metal label. So with that kind of company, you'd understand completely when I say we had a Metal email list at Krome.

The single defining factor of the metal email list was that we took nothing seriously. It's the place where Sexual Harrasment Wednesday was born (medicine balls have a reputation on the metal list). Every single band in existence was open to insults. And then we'd listen to what we listen to anyway, not wiser for the experience but more light-hearted. The people who joined the list towards the end of Krome didn't really get that point and figured serious metal is serious and all that. The glory days though was some of the funniest stuff I've ever read and partaken in.

I got that friend I mentioned in to The Killers. He got me in to Danzig. Fair trade. Is the music good? Then it was fair game. He has an email list these days for Katy Perry Fridays. And he's still the biggest metal head I know.

He calls this album the album that killed metal. It requires the kind of metal list mindset to understand what he means there, so I'll interpret - it's an album that's so good and so influential that it inspired a legion of copycats who only try to recreate the album. So in that sense, it definitely killed European metal (at least until Opeth came along).

At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul

Elitist metal heads are the worst. Half the reason I like so much stuff like Dimmu Borgir and Amon Amarth is due to how over the top and downright stupid it is. Metal is so much more fun when you're, you know, having fun.

Speaking of having fun - Cruncho, you have no excuse, you will like the Murderdolls. Sure, they're a horror punk band at heart, but much like Earth A.D. by The Misfits it has one hell of a mean metal streak. Rather excellent live too, easily my favourite band from Soundwave and all the Sidewaves.

Murderdolls - Women and Children Last

(Try to not sing along to Chapel Of Blood, Nowhere, Blood Stained Valentine, and Hello Goodbye Die)

I'm glad someone posted Murderdolls in this thread, I wasn't going to when I make my post (eventually) as they aren't exactly metal. But I have had that album since release and have been pumping it like a mofo ever since. But then again I'm really into the style of music the Murderdolls, Wednesday 13 (which may as well be Murderdolls too) and the Misfits play.

I'm not exactly a fan of Metal exclusively either though so my tastes are a bit varied. (But you can keep your pop, country and rap please icon_razz.gif ).

Oh, I'm not a metalhead. I'd never consider calling myself one. I'm just as likely to put Infected Mushroom on as I am Megadeth.

Funny what your mate says about Slaughter of the Soul, at the time I thought it was a weaker imitation of Entombed - who really pioneered the Gothenburg type metal sound. What has happened with At the Gates now though - every half ass melodic death core band has ripped them off completely. I am sick to death of 5-7-8 riffs (well thats what I call them) I'm talking frets here. That being said, Slaughter of the Soul is a great album.
