My family lives there, but thankfully they are ok, as my Mum sent me a text this afternoon.
I had no idea till I got the text and put the TV and bloody hell, its really hit the city hard and basically destroyed the heart of the city. The Cathedral is an Icon and for that to be damage, its a massive loss. Not to mention all the people who have had there business and workplaces destroyed and all those Historical buildings that can't be replaced, its really effected the economy this time. They where only just getting over the last Earthquake and getting back on track with employment etc and now this.
I'm so thankfull for that my family are OK and no of them where in the city, but to those effected, my deepest sympathy goes out to you and I wish the people and the City all the best in the recoverer process. _________________

Historical buildings and cathedrals and the like are important, but compared to the loss of human life it really doesn't mean anything. I've been there a couple of times and you're right, it will make a big impact to the feel and the future landscape of the city, but I just can't feel too saddened for the loss of buildings in the overall scheme of things. _________________

wait, what?
it's a boundary island - it sits on the edges of two tectonic plates, much like Japan, of course it's going to be geologically unstable.
and if that wasn't something you knew - it has been hit by several massive earthquakes in the last 12 months or so. though i don't think there had been any death prior to this one - and this wasn't even the largest. _________________

Yeah September was 7.1 I think I heard, but it didn't go as long as this one (6.3), plus it didn't have a crapload of aftershocks (the highest of which was 5.5, which is just plain brutal for an aftershock).

Lower magnitude but wasnt as deep as last time (only 5km deep) and was 10km away from the city, last time it was 40km away. Hence the destruction and death this time. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

The first Earthquake didn't cause as much damage in the central city and it happened at around 4am, so people where not at work etc.
This Earthquake may not of been as big, but cause the buildings where already weakened and the fact it happen at lunch time, when people where at work, shopping etc, makes it all the more worse and destructive.
I know building damage doesn't mean much compared to life's lost. But I mean for ecomony, its really going to hurt the city. Alot of job's where lost after the last earthquake and unemployment was high, this will only make matter's worse. It's not a small thing, it's going to take years to fully rebuild the city. _________________

That sort of stuff is an issue there. Right on the tectonic plates. Some cities just cop it more than others. _________________

This thread isnt growing as much as I thought it would - I guess beecause its NZ? Everyday I read the news about the deaths and impact of the earthquake, I feel terrible for the families who've suffered loss.
