That may be true, but on the other hand, look at how much the main character designs changed between those games. Very little. Cloud? Spiky haired, young male protagonist. Leon? Spiky haired, young male protagonist. Zidane? Spiky haired, young male protagonist. Tidus? Spiky haired, young male protagonist. It's the same for FFXII. 11 doesn't count of course, since it's an MMORPG. Taking risks with main character designs is not something that Nomaura would be trying, and even if he did, SE would probably turn them down. _________________

He literally just did that.
Another key difference is the style.
FF 7/8/9 all differd massivley in style.
I mean for 95% of FF7 cloud looked like this
everyone had a simple and immediately identifiable design. Things like shilouttes etc were paid attention too. The characters were distinct from eachother and distinct from other character in the FF series.
FF8 is probbably the closest to what we have now but at the time it was something new so you can't really hold that against it, (Although Squall still is a fucking horrible main character)
FF9 dropped any pretense of realistic proportions and gave us wildly charictatured characters.
Then from pretty much 10 on it seems like square gave up on creating interesting visual styles and all their games have looked the same. I mean look at tidus, would he really stand out hanging around in FF 13? I mean shit, I thought the chick from 13 2 was vanille cause they look freaking identical. The whole artistic design of the games is just getting freaking monotonous in general. The main characters are really just a symptom of it. _________________

Is Lightning really the main character of FFXIII though? I find myself disagreeing with that, since all of the characters get a similar amount of screen time. That was one of the goals of FFXIIII's development, to try and represent each character equally.
That said, with the exception of Hope (I'm not sure about Snow), I know that I certainly applauded FFXIII's character design. I'll admit it, I find FFXIII-2's character design to be a bit of a step back, but not surprising at all. _________________

If you're arguing it from a marketing perspective with Square not wanting to take risks then she most defintly was. She was portrayed in all the marketing material to be the main character, from being the focus in all the trailers, to being in the front of all the group shots to being the character included in Dissidia duodecium.

For what exactly? They are all the same kind of generic stuff Nomura's been putting out since 10. They have no personality to them. I mean compare em to say 9 wich for my money had the best designs.
Just from looking at the characters you can tell Quina is going to be an oddball, Amarant is going to be a hardcore mother fucker, Zidane is going to be a quick, nimble type of character, Vivi is going to be fucking adorable etc.
Looking at the designs in 13 shows you... what? _________________

See, that's where I have to disagree with you. I really liked the characters in FFX (okay, Tidus was a bit whiney), and after FFXII's terrible cast, FFXIII was a breath of fresh air to me. To me, it felt as though Nomura had gotten back to a good thing, and I still believe that. FFXIIII-2 is where I'm finding myself a little disappointed (mostly at the small number of characters), but it's not too surprising after looking at every other 3D FF game.
Maybe we have a different idea about what makes a good character. If you think that being able to tell what each character is going to be like just by looking at their design is a good thing, then I don't think we'll ever agree. To me, that seems like shallow design. _________________

I'm not talking about the characters, I'm talking about their actual designs, what they look like. They say absolutley nothing they don't tell you anything about the world, they don't tell you anything about the people or their history, their actual designs are all style no substance which is a problem Nomura has when no one reigns him in. Since (and including) FF7, the only FF characters that have interested me were from FF10 and FF13. I wouldn't say that the FF13 characters were amazing, but they weren't terrible/bland either (to me).

Fair call - I didn't even consider that angle.

Just going from a purely visual standpoint does that still hold true? _________________

Well, for me: character > design hands down. Sure it's nice to have a cool character design to look at, but as long as the character is good, their visual design will matter little to me. What I liked about the party in FFX was their characters, that was what kept me interested. The fact that I also rather liked their visual designs was just a bonus. The same goes for FFXIII, though I like the visual designs a little less in that game. _________________

Played around with the demo. Seemed alright - more or less what I expected. I did like the combat in the original game, so I think I should enjoy this game from that perspective.
I'm unsure if they are limitations on character development in terms of crystarium thing for Noel and Serah. I miss being able to pick out the nodes myself, such as in FFX and FFXIII. The way it is set up at the moment, there doesn't seem much point for a node map if you only have 1 choice.
I'm prepared for a terrible story, so I think I can handle that, if the other content holds up.

http://www.siliconera.com/2012/01/24/report-lightning-dlc-scenario-coming-to-final-fantasy-xiii-2/
| Quote: | Early Famitsu leaks brings us news about the upcoming Lightning colosseum battle for Final Fantasy XIII-2 Square Enix teased in December. Just like Omega, players will be able to fight Lightning, dressed in her Final Fantasy XIII outfit. Win and you can add Lightning to your party. Other classic monsters will appear in the colosseum as downloadable content.
An interview also reveals players will be able to get an episode with a new storyline focused on Lightning that reveals the hidden truth behind the game’s endings.
Square Enix is also interested in continuing the Final Fantasy XIII-2 storyline with scenarios for Sazh, Dajh (his son), and Chocolina (the time-traveling merchant). The format for these side-stories has not been decided. Two options mentioned in the interview are more DLC episodes and novels. |
Sounds like this game is going to have a good future ahead of it. _________________

So we'll have to pay for dlc to get a better interpretation of the ending.
