This announcement has prompted me to revisit FFXIII to finish off all the Gran Pulse hunts... After playing it again for 4-5 hours I've come to the following conclusion, as much as some people don't like the gameplay you simply cannot fault the art-style, graphics(playing on PS3 of course... ) and soundtrack. They're all simply amazing.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 A Darker, Freer Story.
Motomu Toriyama discusses what to expect.

Another major theme to be explored in XIII-2: The fates of Vanille and Fang. "The fact that the party was saved by their sacrifice is a scar on all of their hearts," Toriyama told Famitsu. We'll cover how all of their friends are handling it, not just Lightning, and there'll be a large number of new characters as well. I think we'll see more dark and mysterious situations than in FFXIII."
Certainly, the Lightning of FFXIII-2 is different from before -- she may've lost her l'Cie powers at the end of the previous game, but now she's back and dressed skimpier than ever. "I can't go into details, but she might become something even greater than l'Cie [in XIII-2]," Toriyama said. "Her outfit is certainly more revealing, but she still cherishes her usual refined, noble manner. The clothing in general is more fantasy-influenced in this game, and the new weapons will match with that style."
The "feather" motif of the preview trailer served to make Lightning look a bit angelic, especially compared to the far darker appearance of the new character shown in the film. In the interview, however, Toriyama warned against jumping to conclusions. "Who can say which is the angel and which is the devil?" he laughed. "Lightning has a new mission in this game, and [the new character] is going to be in her way as she tries to accomplish it. He's a strong character, capable of fighting on even terms with the heroine who saved the world."
How will it all turn out? Japanese folks will find out pretty soon, as the game's set for a 2011 release in the region. "We made people wait a long time for FFXIII, so we're trying our best to get this game out as quickly as we can," Toriyama said. "Outside of that, we are trying to implement as many of the suggestions given by players, and new ideas we've come up with, into the game as we can. The travelling system is completely different, too -- we're making a truly living world, with lots of people living all the way to the far corners of the game. I think it's a new style of RPG we'll be able to show people here."

Readng this made me so excited..FFXIII was so fabulous..i can just imagine how great this would be...i wish winter was a week away..

It could happen, certainly. The game sounds fairly intruiging so far, I'll be interested to see whether the gameplay has changed much, and what they do with the battle system.

Apparently battle system has evovled according Toriyama..XIII-2 will be a totally different game with XIII looks n feel

^ Oh, I'd love to see that happen. They did the same thing in Xenosaga, giving a few extras in XSII and XSIII if you had clear data from the previous episode. Now that they've mentioned the possibility, I hope they'll decide to include this feature in FFXIII-2 as well. ^^

Continuing the first part, Famitsu has posted their Final Fantasy XIII-2 interview from the 1st Production Premier, Interview is story focused

Also, Famitsu asked, will the purpose of Lightning’s new journey be to find a method of helping Vanille and Fang?
Regarding the latter point, Toriyama noted that being helped by the sacrifice of the two characters left a wound in the hearts of everyone. The story will of course show not just Lightning, but the other allies who were hurt by that, Toriyama assured. Additionally, there will be a number of new characters.
Similar to the Dengeki interview, Famitsu’s interviewers asked if there would be any Final Fantasy X-2 style dancing and singing in XIII-2. XIII-2 will have have a serious direction, Kitase replied. Toriyama noted that considering Vanille and Fang are gone and the world is in a state where Cocoon had fallen, there’s no way for the new story to be totally peaceful. XIII-2 will have a darker and more mysterious side over XIII.
Famitsu asked if XIII-2 will possibly being set in the dark world that Lightning is wandering around in at the end of the Episode I novella. Toriyama responded that the principal setting will be different from that of XIII, but he assured that the FFXIII world will be in the game in some form.
One final point: if you have Final Fantasy XIII save data, you may want to hold on to it. The team is investigating the possibility of giving something to players who have save data in place.

I'm certainly intrigued by the idea of a sequel. I wonder how different it will be to XIII as surely they will take onboard the criticisms that many had about the game. I'm not as pumped for this as I am Versus, but it will be a pre-order nonetheless
Nice to see some X-2 love in this thread. Personally felt it was a far more enjoyable game than X, mostly due to the excellent battle system and the more fun nature of the characters.
Has there been any word on if this is multi-platform? (sorry if it's been mentioned, I haven't been following the news surrounding the game).

Yes it is multi-platform. Ps3 and 360. Also I have very strong feeling Versus and XIII-2 would be full 3D ready game...im sooo excited
