As I'm sure some of you may know by now, I recently purchased a 40GB PlayStation 3 from MitchBRAH which came DOA(Dead On Arrival). Seeing as he was utterly unwilling to give a refund or assist in any possible way, I thought fuck it, I'll fix it myself.
So away I went, took it to a friends house, we bought a heat gun and some thermal paste, watched some YouTube videos of 40GB PS3's being disassembled and away we went. Things we noticed were that;
-There was little or no thermal paste applied to the RSX/Cell SPU chips
-Some parts were quite loose
-Heatpads were taken off the RAM chips, and placed elsewhere.
-A very shoddy attempt at a YLOD fix, as some of the motherboard seemed a bit fried in one small area.
Naked PS3 =)
Close up, RSX chip on the left, Cell SPU on the right.
After we cleaned off the chips and made them nice and shiny, we hoisted the main board on a piece of wood to make it level, then we used the heat gun on the bottom side of the board, where the RSX/Cell chips were placed. Here is where we really shit ourselves since the board actually started to bend. We panicked for a few seconds then kept going, we then let it cool down for 15-20mins and noticed the board went back to it's original form. Afterward we used the heat gun on the top part, again the board bent and we crapped ourselves, but once it cooled down it went back to normal.
Next we applied thermal paste yada yada, put the PS3 back together. This was the moment of truth....We put the power in....Flicked the power button on....Light popped up, so far so good....Then we touched the POWAH, AND IT LIGHT UP!!!! But then, the fan didn't start up....
We fainted for a few moments before one of us remembered we didn't put the power plug for the fan....Another FFUUUU moment which meant we had to disassemble it all over again. After 5 mins or so the moment of truth came once again....POWER SWITCH ON!! POWER ON!!! YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
It's actually green, camera fucked up a bit.
This one is for dloiscute <3
So yeah, it's working great now. There is no 'fan' problem as far as I can see, it's working really well. Let's just pray it stays working for a long long time. But I'm still annoyed by being sold a YLOD PS3.
P.S-The SIXAXIS is still fucked, so I gotta spend more time fixing that now. _________________

Good to see you got it working in the end.

With the cooling period of using the heat gun, took us around 1.5hrs. _________________

Cheers man, we were seriously considering to NOT do it and send it off to Sony but we decided to try it ourselves, and it worked! ^__^ _________________

It cheated death!!!
Shame about the Sixaxis though, maybe just get dual shock 3 cheaply? (I could never be able to hold the sixaxis properly, its lightless is very misleading and had accidentally toss it a few times while picking it up :S)
Anyway, good work _________________ "Work hard now, play even harder later"

From your first couple of paragraphs, it sounds like the console had already been opened from a previous attempt at a YLOD fix, which means Sony would've sent it straight back to you as the void seal had already been broken?
Yet another aspect that Mitchbrah failed to acknowledge, and is most likely the reason he didn't just send it in to Sony himself for repair and chose to sell it. Glad to see it's all sorted for you.

That's another reason we didn't send it in, Sony might not have fixed it since the warranty stick was taken off. As well as MAJOR evidence showing someone did try to tamper with it beforehand. _________________

From what I recall with my 60gb, opening the console up just voids your warranty and considering when you send it to Sony and pay the 250 (that's what it was about a year ago) you are essentially paying for an out of warranty service it's alright. I asked them and they said as long as no major alterations had been made they would fix it if I paid the out of warranty fee.
From the sounds of it though I'm not sure if Sony would classify this as a major alteration though? _________________

Good job, Zero!
I don't know this Mitch guy, but from what I've read he seems way too defensive for someone who apparently didn't know there was a problem. I'm just saying that if it was me, I would be shocked that there was an issue rather than going on the defensive straight away.
Still, that's in the past, and the fact that you've gotten the PS3 to work now is the main thing.
Here's to it working for a long, long time! _________________

Very very impressive work.
Should consider setting up a repair shop or something if you got spare time.

So did you put any more thermal grease on the chips? Or was the heatgun enough to get whatever was there to re-flow?
Glad it worked for ya _________________

We of course, took off the thermal paste that was already on there, then put our own. _________________

Impressive job; always good to see something great come out of something not-so-much.
Given MitchBRAH's attempt at fixing it himself; it just shows that he probably shouldn't be let near machinery, heavy or otherwise. _________________
