Great news guys! The PSN store just updated, and they've added the Gundemonium Collection! It's a package of the games Gundemonium Recollection, GundeadliGne and Hitogata Happa - all for $19.95. You can also buy them seperately for $8.50 each. So, there you go, three new shmup games available in one go.
I don't often play this type of game, but they look like fun so I just bought the collection! _________________

I've been playing Gundemonium Recollection today, it's pretty tough but lots of fun. I've managed to finish it on the easiest difficulty (the last boss was tricky). After a fair few attempts, I've even managed to make it to the last boss on the difficulty up from that, but I'm stuck for now. _________________

Maybe they are, but I'm not complaining. War machines are so cliched, I think this is a nice change/a bit of fun. The enemies are totally crazy, it's great! It's very much a "protect the core" kind of thing, where you only have to avoid attacks that would hit a small area in the middle of your character. Learning the size of the hitbox and how your movements should go is interesting, and very important of course. The game even gives you points for near misses.
That Bangai O game looks pretty interesting, I might have to check it out. _________________

These games sound awesome, thanks for letting us know, $19.95 for 3 games sounds like a good deal.
Who here has bought them? Whoever has them, if they don't mind, I'll add you to my friends list when I turn the PS3 on next for some scoreboard mayhem.
Starcraft II has completely ruined any chance of 1cc'ing any shmups anytime soon. I was getting heavily stuck into Mushihimesama Futari 1.5 a couple of weeks ago and can now reach the final stage on most playthroughs, so I'm edging ever closer, but I've probably lost it all now that I haven't played it for a little while. Then again, there's not half as much stuff to remember as Ikaruga, so it shouldn't be too hard when I fire it up again to get back to where I was.
Parents hitting up Thailand on Thursday, gonna try and get them to send me back a Japanese 360 console, so hopefully I can give Ketsui a go in a few weeks time.
Not really feeling the new horizontal shooter you posted Jahanzeb, I've always had something against horizontal shooters, I'm much better doing slight flicks of the controller left and right, rather than up and down, which is what's needed for the horizontal shooters.

Awesome! really hope you do, clearly youre a superior shmup player and a Japanese 360 is just what you need

heh! I hear ya man, and I also think veritical shooters are more 'roomier' than horizontal ones . that said, I dont mind them as I have enjoyed alot of Gradius back in the day _________________

My housemate picked up that shumup pack, said that now he was enjoying Demon Souls, he needed something else to spank him, or something.
As someone who played Touhou for a while, Gundemonium isn't really that strange. _________________

Well, he bought the right pack then. Gundemonium Recollection will definitely do that! GundeadliGne (I just started it) is quite a bit easier in comparison! I've been playing them in order of release. _________________

They are a good deal. If your PSN ID is MrCool, then I just added you - but I don't know.

DoDonpachi is coming to the iPhone soon. Don't know how well this will translate. Nothing worse I could think of then using on-screen d-pad for a SHMUP. _________________

I've been playing Ikaruga....its so hard!! I can't even kill the boss on chapter 3, and I am currently stuck on chapter 4 where I run out of continue credits (sitting on 4 or 5 total credits). Guess I'm just bad at this type of game
On the plus side I absolutely love the design of the ships, and I bought the model kits for Ikaruga and Sirasagi (not actually in the main game, but in the background story, its the ship the protagonist piloted and got shot down before he piloted Ikaruga).

Youtube here
| Quote: | -Danmaku type horizontal scrolling shooting game
-Hardcore military shooter
-Each ship has a pair of characters (pilot and gunner?) with specific attacks
-Each ship changes its attacks when you change "mode"
-The characters (enemies, allies, and others - all human) are quite diverse
-Ships are designed as hardcore, 1950s style retro mechas
-Game is designed around destructible objects and dodging bullets - the core elements of an enjoyable STG - rather than obstacles and topography. This gives it a refreshing feeling.
-It has been carefully developed for over 1 year.
-Release in summer/fall 2010 |
I love the character designs for one, i think they're amazing, and the fact it's a military shooter with retro mechas...I'm in love. |
The character designs look awesome! I'll have to check this game out when its released on consoles, which probably won't be for a while though.

Been playing Espgaluda II Black Label on 360. Still trying to work out all the mechanics (and for all the different modes!), but so far it's a pretty solid game. Awesome soundtrack too.
I should have a review up by next week _________________ Check out my game, Awien Ambush

Great news to come back to! I'm going to have to grab these now.
I picked up Death Smiles when I was in the states. The LE version...despite not having a US console to play it...

Not that I've played it but most people I know who have played Espgaluda on iphone said it handles quite well. I think Cave can handle it _________________

Third boss is hard but easily doeable once you know the best way to go about it. Stay in the top left corner, and stay in basically the same position, and dash gradually to the left whilst switching polarity as necessary. Shoot earch arc until it's almost destroyed, and when its nearly done one full circle, stay in white and knock out all the red ones. When there's a couple of red ones left, you should have full charge and just wipe the rest away with a single bomb. If you add me, I can send you a replay if you wish. Keep at it though I must mention though, the game is much more satisfying by focussing on one stage and trying to chain together a good combo, rather than all out going for broke trying to survbive, shooting anything you can.
Also wouldn't mind a pic of your model Ikaruga ships one day if you could, as a figure collector of sorts, I'd love to look at any sort of figure from one of my favourite games ever. I didn't even know any existed.
As for people who bought the Gundemonium Collection on the PSN, does it have worldwide leaderboards? Just got my PS3 back then after a couple of months, and will probably only buy it if it has leaderboards as something to keep me going, otherwise I'd probably only give it a couple of credits and stop playing altogether, so at $19.95 it's a bit of a gamble not knowing. Will add Admeister and a couple of others if it has the leaderboards.

Thanks heaps for the tip!! Staying in the upper left quadrant...yeah that makes sense!! Wonder why I never thought of it lol?!
Here are the links for the Japanese modelers that made the ships:
http://members2.jcom.home.ne.jp/13bspec/ISEYA/ikaruga/ikaruga.html
http://www.abiraun.com/gallery/sirasagi.html
Both of them also made Eboshidori, which is the first level boss in Ikaruga (that cool alien looking humanoid thing with the japanese style armor). I think 13B Spector's version is better though, the lines and details are so sharp.
Slightly off topic, but an extra artist I recommend checking out is Sparrow. He's very famous for scratchbuilding videogame space ship models, and he also scratchbuilt Anubis, Jehuty and Vic Viper from the Zone of Enders series. Definitely worth checking out!

So I downloaded the Gundemonium Collection....I don't really like it.
Everything is oversized and too big. Your character is massive, yet has a small hit window which isn't even displayed on-screen, which is really annoying. Hate how it just shows the heart icon every now and then. And circle and square at the same time for some special mode? That is the most retarded two button combination you can possibly have with the ps3 controller, and they ibncorporate it into a bullet-hell shmup, great. And the game has the world's slowest bomb as well, it's basically useless.
The game reinforces my hate for the Playstation controller as well, the concave analogue sticks are too hard to use for precision flicks.
Had a couple of goes and reached the second level boss, so I still have a bit of work to do. I'll keep at it and have a few more rounds, but playing this just makes me want to fire up Mushihimesama or Espgaluda II instead.

Since when did the PS3 have concave analogue sticks? I know the XB360 controller does, unless you modded your PS3 controller. _________________

Convex was the word I wanted, damn year 10 science and your concave/convex lenses.
So, to reiterate, convex analogue sticks suck balls.

Starting to see why shmup developers choose the Xbox 360. Th layout is def comfy for shmups. The Playstation pad will always be a fighting game pad. _________________
