I did really want the Squier at first, and I'm guessing for the couple of months or so of playing the guitar Rock Band 3 would help a lot, being able to see where your fingers are without looking down and such, but after that you'd just use Rock Band for the tabs, which while helpful, is nothing you can't get online. And for $500 (or however much the Squier is going to be), you could get a much better guitar, a Squier if you wanted, and you would still learn the guitar and probably be as good at it, it just might be a little harder to start with. But that's just my opinion, and if you want to learn the guitar and have the money, then there's nothing wrong with learning through RB.

See but the thing is Gecko - you can't just plug any guitar into the game can you? Doesn't it have to be this guitar or the Mad Catz one?
I used to play guitar for 9 years, but got bored of it, maybe buying this Squier to play on RB3, will make me want to download TABs off the net and re-spark my interest.
Will be interesting to see how PRO mode plays out. Especiall the drums. I heard they are re-releasing the Queen pack so all songs can be played in Pro mode. _________________

No, you can only use those two guitars as they have custom necks to track finger movement. Though I wish it had some kind of tab viewer, letting you see the Pro Guitar tabs without having the guitar, and letting you slow it down and such, that would have been pretty cool.

The RB3 drum kit is velocity sensitive whereas the RB2 one is not. I have the RB2 drum kit hooked up to my PC as a midi trigger for Addictive drums plugin in Reaper. All hits are triggered at the same velocity ie midi cc 127. _________________ I'd be apathetic, but I can't be arsed.

Really? I'm pretty sure the Rock band 2 drums are........i mean if you look at the images of the Rock band 3 set on stuff like EB Games, etc , its just RB2 drums + Upgraded RB3 cymbals. That and i do have them. Maybe the software you using doesn't support them properly or is outdated?.

I have to admit the lack of promotion/advertising for the game from EA, so close to release, is a concern to me. But considering how EA didn't release Rock Band 2 or the new instruments that came out for it, it's not surprising.
You'd think we would have seen it in catalogues by now, but i did read on Kotaku AU that the 21st is actually the ship date for the game, and that it'll be released here the week later.

Out next week, except PS3. We pay too much as usual
| Kotaku AU wrote: | We managed to get in contact with Home Entertainment Suppliers and quizzed them on the details. In terms of availability, a limited stock of Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii controllers, including the new Keyboard peripheral, have already been sent to EB and JB Hi-fi and should be ready for launch this coming Thursday. There has been a problem, however, with stock on the PlayStation 3 and Home Entertainment Suppliers has estimated that it will take at least another three weeks for the new PS3 instruments to hit stores.
But then there’s the issue of pricing. There seems to be a massive discrepancy between what we are paying for the instruments in Australia, compared to the pricing in the US and the UK. Here’s a quick comparison…
US Pricing (from Amazon)
Rock Band 3 Wireless Fender Mustang PRO-Guitar Controller: $149.99
Rock Band 3 Wireless Pro-Drum and Pro-Cymbals Kit: $129.99
Rock Band 3 Wireless Keyboard: $79.99
UK Pricing (from Game UK)
Rock Band 3 Wireless Fender Mustang PRO-Guitar Controller: £119.99
Rock Band 3 Wireless Pro-Drum and Pro-Cymbals Kit: £119.99
Rock Band 3 Wireless Keyboard: £69.99
Australian Pricing (From EB Games)
Rock Band 3 Wireless Fender Mustang PRO-Guitar Controller: $288
Rock Band 3 Wireless Pro-Drum and Pro-Cymbals Kit: $288
Rock Band 3 Wireless Keyboard: $138 |
So nearly AU$90 extra for Pro guitar or drum+cymbals when compared to the UK. Roughly double the US prices. Ouch. _________________

At least we can import peripherals without having to worry about regionlocking - shipping will be steep, but I can't imagine US price + shipping being more than AU price anyway, even for drums. I've decided to hold off on getting RB3 and wait to get a PS3 first, though Much as I really want to play pro guitar, I'm going to get the Squier anyway which is likely not out until next year, and it's already going to be expensive enough for me to switch my setup from Wii to PS3, no need to buy more games that I'll have to replace later! (At least the Squier is cross-console.) _________________

Definitely jump on importing - I ordered my keyboard from Amazon.com on Wednesday and it's already in Aus to be delievered on Monday. Cost me $110 including shipping. Starting end of the month you can buy the three-cymbal pack to upgrade your existing drums to pro mode as well for $40US, beats the hell outta paying $288 for a whole new kit.
Also some other notes I posted elsewhere:
Kmart & Target both said in emails to people on the RB forums that they wont be stocking RB3 (were specifically asked about XBOX360 but you'd assume it wouldn't be platform-specific).
GAME preorders have started to be upgraded to 'pending' and people have been charged so looks like they've got stock.
Check stores earlier than Thurs next week, many retailers that have been asked by the desperate folks on the RB forums are saying it doesn't have a strict street date, they are expecting to see stock by Tues and intend on selling it straight away

It got 5/5. Pro guitar looks like a lot of fun, though I still think I'd have preferred buying my Squier Strat over the Rock Band 3 one, even if it does looks fun. But I'll definitely get the keyboard.
Now, if only I had a working PS3 :\

Any reference on prior instrument compatibility (say, GH:WT guitar and drums) currently available? _________________

Doesn't amazon restrict shipping only to US only for stuff like hardware though? :S
Oh and yeah, i've done the calculations: depending on where you get it from, Importing a keyboard is $20-$30AU cheaper than buying it locally.
Unluckily for me due to the Stupid platform exclusivity agreement in the US, i couldn't buy the Keyboard bundle for ps3 , fortunately for me i got a $30 EB gift card from a friend for my birthday so i getting the keyboard for the same price Shame it looks like i have to wait a couple of weeks.....but then again, i have to wait 1.5-2 weeks for the game to arrive + Uni stuff .
Lastly, Where the hell can i get the 3 pro-cymbal pack for a reasonable price($70-$85AU)? god damn Barnes and Noble (Gamestop basically) canceled my order with no reason.... _________________

Hell, I've never been allowed to order a GAME from Amazon, let alone peripherals.

Someone said in the comments to that Kotaku article that Amazon is classifying the controllers as instruments, and not game peripherals, and that's why they're allowing shipment to Australia.

Just a heads up people, if you're ordering the 3 Cymbal Upgrade kit for your drums, make sure you own the Beatles Rock Band Drum Kit (White Pads/Black Dot) or RB2 Kit (Black Pads).
RB1 (Grey Pads) don't have the cymbal plugs for them to work. _________________

Yeah they've just got it classed as an 'accessory', ordered mine without any trouble at all and it's literally in Aus right now waiting to be delivered to my door on Monday. Otherwise, I've used EB's US website to order the whole bundle before and they weren't too worried about shipping o/s.

So I've skimmed through this thread and can't find a definitive answer. Is the current status of the Squier still that it'll be available in a couple of months, at least from the US?
I assume that if it isn't here when the game launches EB probably won't sell it later, nor any other local retailer _________________

I don't think theres even a solid release date for it in the US yet. At least, not one that i can find. Closest thing i've found is someone quoting someone else with a 'early 2011'.
be interested to see the price when they announce one. _________________

Fender is distributing the product, so it's got a fairly high likelihood of being sold in Music Stores predominantly (It is a guitar first, controller second).
It's got a reasonable chance of coming out here due to the upgraded MIDI format it's capable of using from the technology in the neck.
They're looking at a release for early next year though. _________________

ok thanks.
I never thought of it being distributed in guitar stores, but I guess that makes sense.
Will probably hold off on the game until I can save and purchase the guitar when it becomes available. The Mustang is tempting but I figure that if I'm going to spend that much on a peripheral I might as well wait and go all out _________________

woot. Barnes and Noble un-cancelled my order and have shipped my cymbal 3-pack. $75 US (sigh, shipping is O_o was $35....but then again according to the UPS tracking site, the thing is like 6-7 pounds >_<). Now lets see how many countries it goes to before I actually get it(Hooray for tracking). If i remember correctly, my Rock Band 2 Bundle went from Louisiana -> Texas -> UAE -> Germany(or France can't remember) -> Hong Kong/Thailand -> Singapore -> Perth.
There might've been another country before it hit asia, i dunno, was so long ago...Took 4 weeks from dispatch if i remember correctly
Then it's the game shipping next week.
Now we play the waiting game (Wait for game/cymbals to arrive, get the Keyboard and for Uni to finish for the semester)..... can not wait _________________
