I think this game was great for its time, but I think if they do a reboot as some people suggest the end result has a very high chance of falling short of peoples expectations.
I think the best thing they could do is update the graphics and release on wiiWare instead.

I agree bernie. Dress it up, address previous hardware limitations and release it for PSN, Live and WiiWare and you'll have a winner. A shame that the stakeholders refuse to agree on it.
A 'reimagining' would kill it (especially if Activision are solely involved).

Man, this game kicked arse back in the day. But I played it again recently and OH GOD IT WAS TERRIBLE. I seriously just wouldn't buy the same game with updated graphics so a reimagining might work with a whole new engine. Feels wrong though.

Hence reimagining . The re-release of Goldeneye is in development hell due to the split license, but a re-imagining of Goldeneye is theoretically possible. Activision hold the rights to the Bond franchise. Rather than rebuild Goldeneye they'd be making their 'own' Goldeneye.
No reuse of assets or design. Legally, they could do it. _________________

I doubt it. It was made on a Nintendo console by Rare and then you have the whole Bond mess of a license which while activision holds the current Bond license I don't think they hold the license for Goldeneye. Legally you would need a whole mess of people to sign up on it and then you have the fact that the game is so old and Perfect Dark which is the same game play was criticized for that game play when it was re-done.

Do they realize that a Golden Eye remake would flop anyway?
I mean, I think some games are probably left in our memories. _________________ Shin J Leon.

If Activision were to literally recreate the exact same game then yes, there would be legal issues.
But Activision own the rights to Bond related game development. Nintendo/Rare/Microsoft own rights to the Goldeneye that was released on the N64, not Goldeneye as an intellectual property. The code, the level design, and the conceptualisation of Goldeneye N64 is untouchable at the moment.
However, Activision could legally create a new James Bond game titled "Goldeneye", and again have it based off the same film, having levels set in similar locations, similar weapons, and a similar plot. If they directly copy the game then there will be problems, but if they make "Goldeneye Wii" based off the movie then they're not technically breaking any copywrite laws.
Microsoft and Nintendo couldn't do this because the only license they hold is 'Goldeneye N64', not the film and not the bond franchise, only the material that was specifically developed for that game, such as the art assets and level design. Everything else Bond related falls in Activision's court.
If this rumour is true it likely will not feature the same level design as Goldeneye N64. It wont be a 'remake' persay. Instead it will be a reimagining; a new Bond game based off the Goldeneye film, that by default will share similarities with the previous game, but not actually 'copy' or borrow assets and design. _________________

It has got to be better than Goldeneye: Rogue Agent (EA)
*** I thought Quantam of Solace (ps3/x360 etc) was a decent game, will be interested to see the end result.

Wow, so they're just banking on all the people who played Goldeneye on N64 buying the new version, and most people won't know it's by a different developer or anything, so no doubt it'll sell well on nostalgia alone in the major market.
Meanwhile the rest of us are all screaming out agonisingly as it becomes a top seller, despite being a crappy movie game based on one of the best games of the earlier days, but re-released by probably the pinnacle of greed in the gaming industry, no doubt to be followed by Goldeneye 2: The Goldening, Goldeneye 3: Bond's Revengance, and Goldeneye: Modern Espionage.
Eurocom developed The World is not Enough on N64, which in my time playing, was awful in comparison to Rare developed Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, as well as 007 Nightfire, Predator: Concrete Jungle, Olympic games series and numerous sub-par movie tie-ins. My confidence in this title's quality is lower than something that is very close to the ground, like a dachshund . _________________

I thought Goldeneye was great for features but the actual gameplay was terrible. Having to stop to aim really killed it for me so I'd be all for a reimagining over a port or whatever, any day.

Just for reference, I compiled a chart showing Eurocom and N-Space's Games since 1997 versus their average review scores.
Eurocom Average Game Ratings since '97
N-Space Average Game Ratings since '97
Rare Ltd. Average Game Ratings since '97
