So the Eleventh Doctor has had two episodes air out here in Downunderland. I already like him more than Tennant. Be quiet newfans, it's not blasphemy. I've been watching Doctor Who for almost longer than I can remember - I have distinct images of a Colin Baker adventure in my head when it was airing on weekend afternoons back in the 80's.
I loved Doctor Who as a kid. My mum used to buy me the old Target novelisation range from the supermarket for something like $1 per book, and I had quite a few. It was basically the first show where I'd ignore everything else to make sure I watched it. Somehow though, I always managed to miss the fourth episode of Paradise Towers until quite a few years after I saw the first three. Terrible story, but hey, when you're six those cleaners are scary. They're meant to take trash but they collect people instead? No mum, it's very definitely my brother's turn to take the garbage out!
Back to the point of the topic though. Rank your Doctor! I'm curious as to what everyone's choices for best Doctor is. It's certainly something that gets polarising responses from just about everyone you care to ask.
My rankings are as follows:
1) Tom Baker - 4th Doctor
2) Christopher Eccleston - 9th Doctor
3) Colin Baker - 6th Doctor
4) Patrick Troughton - 2nd Doctor
5) Jon Pertwee - 3rd Doctor
6) David Tennant - 10th Doctor
7) Sylvester McCoy - 7th Doctor
8) Paul McGann - 8th Doctor
9) Peter Davison - 5th Doctor
Noticeably missing there is the 11th and 1st Doctor. I haven't seen any of Hartnell's stories (Three- and Five- Doctors not included), and I want to see more of the 11th before I place him anywhere. _________________

1> Jon Pertwee
2> Tom Baker
3> Peter Davison
4> Patrick Troughton
5> Sylvester McCoy
6> Colin Baker
7> William Hartnell
Hartnells doctor was a cantankerous old bastard, i didn't much care for that doctor at all.....and i haven't seen the new doctors so can't comment after McCoy.
I like pertwee's doctor the best as i enjoyed that whole era where he was trapped on earth by the council.....and he had bessie. Also i loved worzel gummidge and i has a soft spot for old Jon beyond Dr Who, so yeah Pertwee for me. I also rank Peter davison highly as that was around the era that was new and hot of the press when i was around 11 or twelve.
No doubt though Tom Baker had the best material to work with.
Now if we are talking assistants - the first romana, woo woo, and she was also a time lord......

Oh, ranking companions is even harder. I'd definitely put Peri and Mel (the 6th Doctor's companions) right down the bottom though, basically the complete opposite to where I rank 6. They were both utterly useless. I did like Liz from the first batch of Pertwee's episodes, pity she was only in it for one season. Jaimie (the Scottish lad with Troughton) was a pretty cool as well. Sarah Jane was the first companion that I saw that I really liked, and then the Doctor dropped her off in the wrong town.
The new companion though, Amy Pond... oh lawds. There's hot companions, and then there's this:
And to top it off, the character isn't daft. _________________

Thank god for that........
I just remembered the other reason i like peter davison, he had the dreaded Adric episode, i can tell you school the next day after that episode was like a morgue, everyone was bloody horrified....
Earthshock was the story for that one.......made even better by the doctors refusal to break the laws of time in episodes after Earthshock.....good tucker.
Oh and i do love me some lethbridge stewart action in the pertwee episodes.
wow it seems like i like all the most hated companions of the dr...hell i even like turlow. _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

Adric's actor was terrible, but his final episode was pretty sad. When they repeated the show from 2003-06 I saw every episode minus maybe a dozen (tops), so I'm pretty well versed, although I haven't watched the new series since the retarded series three finale with the flying balls invading earth, and RTD turning The Master into cheese and the big ol' reset button. Although I did watch the 8 minute Children in Need special with Peter Davison.
1. has to be Pertwee (and the whole era, Jo Grant, the Brigadier, lots of The Master)
2. Davison
3. Tom Baker
4. Troughton
Now it gets tricky, I don't really love the rest…
5. McGann (terrible movie though)
6. Eccleston
7. Colin Baker
8. Tennant
9. McCoy
10. Hartnell
Davison and Baker I'm kind of torn on, Tennant wore on me more and more as the new show went on, McCoy I barely remember except that the show itself had seen much better days, and Hartnell if memory serves was never very likable and the show hadn't really developed much while he was the lead.
Once I catch up on a couple of the less terrible series four episodes and watch series five, I fully expect Smith to be in my top five.

They missed a truckload of pertwee episodes in that replay.
Sadly i missed my favourite episode in that replay block, the robots of death...

I was under the impression they only skipped serials that had episodes missing, and some of the Dalek shows for licensing reasons. I have this big (huge even) Doctor Who book put out by the BBC that I think I went through completely after I first got it, and I don't think I'd missed any stories from the ABC repeats except for those.

That episode where Adric kicks it, had no theme outro music if I recall. I remember tearing up that day.
Doctors in order of greatness:
1. Tom Baker
2. Peter Davidson
3. Jon Pertwee
4. Patrick Troughton
5. The rest
The Peter D episodes were awesome - much stranger than the previous storylines. Favourite episodes for me are the E-space ones, and of course Tom Baker in Seeds of doom, Genocide of the Daleks, Hand of Fear, Pyramids of Mars... so many rippers. _________________ I'd be apathetic, but I can't be arsed.

4. Davison
I'm enjoying 11 as well, but too early to rank I reckon. For some reason I never liked Tom Baker. _________________

All this Davison love is making me think I should watch a few more of his serials again. I just remember him being so ineffectual, and only getting balls on rare occasions like Caves of Androzani.
Actually, that's not a bad idea: sell me the fifth Doctor. Which serials would you put forward as evidence of his awesomeness? _________________

Earthshock
Terminus
Resurrection of the daleks because i love me some davros action, although he look weird and povvo in this one)
Time flight purely because he tells teegan and nyssa to get fucked
I thought he was a bit of a ball buster from the start of his tenure, he treated his companions differently to what we were used to....plus i liked how turlough (found out how to spell it) was in cahoots with the master. _________________ kill, kill, kill.....the white man. Kill the white man, kill

I liked Tennant and I think Smith shows promise. What I definitely do approve is the new companion.

Pretty unimpressed with how many people on PALGN have actually seen the old series, I guess it's just the hardcore (me) and the old (all y'all I assume). I might leaf through my book sometime soon and see if any Davison stories seem particularly memorable, Goober. I had a look on Wikipedia already but nothing rang any particular bells in my head, not even the cloister bell, LOLOLO.

I'm younger than fetid and sub there, but I manage to impress people twenty years older than me with how much I know about their pop culture references. I blame my family, who are responsible for introducing me to tons of old school stuff, yet I was the only one hardcore in to the Doctor when I was younger. Although my dad did try to make a Doctor Who game in SEUCK back in the day with a flying TARDIS shooting spinning question marks at transparent Daleks. Yeah, it was as silly as it sounds.
I did pick up and watch Earthshock on Friday though. Largely forgettable except for the Cybermen reveal and the last five minutes. Davison is definitely likeable, but as I mentioned previously he's mostly ineffectual in regards to solving problems. _________________

Thread necro!
I've played catch up with Hartnell. He's stand-off-ish with his companions like Colin Baker and Eccleston, but reminds me of Yoda's first few scenes in The Empire Strikes back when he's interfering with the villain of the week's plans.
I've watched a fair few more Davison stories too. I still find it hard to shift from my opinion of "likeable but largely ineffectual." He does have some great serials, like Kinda, but more often than not events happen around him rather than him being involved in events. Which makes Androzani an even more fantastic way to finish his run.
I figured in the second episode of Matt Smith's run that this incarnation is a bit of a master manipulator, even more so than McCoy's Doctor. It's certainly proving to be the case this season, with a fair degree of misdirection thrown in on top.
So, my amended and complete list is:
| GooberMan wrote: | 1) Tom Baker - 4th Doctor
2) Christopher Eccleston - 9th Doctor
3) Matt Smith - 11th Doctor
4) Colin Baker - 6th Doctor
5) Patrick Troughton - 2nd Doctor
6) Jon Pertwee - 3rd Doctor
7) David Tennant - 10th Doctor
8) Sylvester McCoy - 7th Doctor
9) William Hartnell - 1st Doctor
10) Paul McGann - 8th Doctor
11) Peter Davison - 5th Doctor |
