Any bets it'll be revolutionary, inventive, and a true landmark in the series? Yeah, I didn't think so, either...

Can someone explain to me the differences with these different pokemon releases? What's actually new to the game? Mechanics, story or just a few new pokemon?

Well aside from new pokemon they do tend to try and in a few new things with each rendition.
If I recall correctly; Ruby/Sapp/Emer. included the beauty contests.
Emerald also included the Battle Dome thing.. can't remember the name.
Diamond/Pearl/Plat. added the Underground.
Gold/Silver/Crystal era added breeding and genders.
It goes on but yeah; it tends to be much of the same over and over. Pic one of 3 starters (One being Fire, one Water and one Grass element type); fight your way through 8 gyms and face the elite 4 while defeating Team (random name here) all in the name of becoming the worlds greatest trainer.
In all honesty the one thing I want to see in a Pokemon title is the ability to travel between the regions freely (at the moment there's 4 regions and a 5th coming with B/W); and not have it so linear.

Yellow was the first game where NPCs gave you pokemon outside of your starter (now they give you eggs, but conceptual still the same).
Gold/Silver changed the Special stat into Special Attack and Special Defense. It added a day night system, with events happening on certain days of the week. As well as two new types: Dark and Steel (the only additional types to date). Crystal added a female main character.
Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald added beauty contests and the battle tower. Emerald expanded the battle tower into the battle frontier, creating a series of rule based matches (can't use items, etc.) with each series having it's own boss to defeat. Also introduced the trick house where you would solve puzzles to earn prizes.
Diamond/Pearl/Platinum added back in the day/night system. Added a physical/special split to all attacks, whereas before whether they were boosted by attack or special attack was defined by the type, now it's clearly stated increasing the depth of the battle system. Added additional functionality to the interface with the Poketchi apps. Brought in 3d elements to the world.
HeartGold/SoulSilver refined the 3d, and generally looks much better for it, as it was a little jarring in DPPt. Allowed you to register two key items at once, one assigned to a button, the other tappable on the touch screen (both are shown on the touch screen and can both be tapped).
Every generation has added more Pokemon, we're now at 493 Pokemon.
Black and White has some scans available, so far it looks like the 3d has been improved (presumably it's on the 3DS and is taking advantage of that fact) again, and the Pokemon Mart and Centre seem to have been rolled into one place.

^ not sure where you got 3DS from as there is no way you can pick up "3D" images from a 2D replication of a 2D images of a 3D source... It's just a perspective change, instead of a 75% vertical angle it's now more 66%.

Pokemon has really gone the way of the sims, releasing the same thing with a few tiny extra's every now and then and raking in absurd amounts of money for it, and yes it did sting to compare my favourite childhood game to the Sims. _________________

You've encountered a wild Michael Jackson!
Pokemon fainted. Nintendo is out of usable colours or shades.
Too soon? Too soon.

I'm liking the new look - for the battle screens and the 3D improvements for general exploration; the old 75% angle has been going forever. _________________ GAMEparents

Well, if the saying is "If it isn't broken, don't fix it" comes true, then Pokemon actually does this pretty well.
For me, I grew up with Pokemon Red and Gold... I completely skipped 3rd gen and got back into it with Pearl, Platinum and now HeartGold.
I skipped 3rd gen because I thought it was stupid... "they just keep adding 100 more pokemon each time, it's ridiculous and stupid"
But I realised after playing 4th gen, these new additions are pretty vital... I'm no longer "150 pokemon is enough", it really isn't... Everyone I know who says that and has this "Ultimate" party of pokemon to kick anyone's butt all have the same pokemon... The new additons add a much broader range of strategy and cunning that leaves everyone's pokemon party new and unique.
There was a MASSIVE difference between Pearl, Diamond and Platinum to HeartGold and SoulSilver... For one, HG/SS didn't feel like it was just a GBA game ported to the DS... It actually felt and played like a proper DS game, with more emphasis on the touch screen rather than static text and option boxes to use the d-pad and a+b buttons for... This lead to the ability to register two different key items and the ability to use running shoes permanently instead of having to hold b to use them.
This also made for easier and faster pokemon management in the PC because it utilised a drag'n'drop system.
They also replaced the 'beauty contest' for the pokethlon, which is a bunch of olympic mini-games... and is so much better than beauty contests!
There is so many new features and gameplay changes apart from aethetics
In all honesty though, 3rd gen is probably the worst generation... sure, ok, it did introduce dual-battle... but the new pokemon it introduced and everything to do with those games abolutely sucked _________________

Pokémon has been announced! At least, the titles of the next generation has been announced. Pokémon both Black and White are the next pair of games, to be released this fall on DS in Japan. Nintendo's going for relatively simple colors after things like "HeartGold" and "Pearl." And. that's pretty much all we know of that. _________________ r4i card
