-enabling SSH
Thats just off the top of my head, but those are most of the advantages of jailbreaking.
As for the update, Im in no rush to update since I hardly play online anyway. |
Just to throw in some food for thought...I write reviews for TouchArcade.Com, and I remember the Tap-Fu devs (game devs on the iPhone) contacting us to shed some light on their internally collected piracy figures. Jailbreaking for piracy is bloody rampant to say the least: http://smellslikedonkey.com/wordpress/?page_id=274
What's more, this was only a week after the release if I remember right, who knows what the figures have blown out to.
Just pay attention to the statistics.
I tend to agree with fatpizza and Denny. I respect everyone's opinion on the loss of a feature, but evidence has shown that if something can be pirated, it'll be pirated on a large scale. And for something as expensive as a PS3 game...we can all use our imaginations and experiences with chipped consoles to fill in the rest of the blanks.
So, Denny's right-- you can't really fault Sony here guys for panicking a bit.
Certainly no developer/manufacturer makes a system with the intention of leaving security vulnerabilities. There are just so many possible avenues of attack that it's a wonder it has taken people this long. Sony are only doing what they can to stave off a potentially massive black hole in their future earnings, and if they have to be a little ham-fisted about it to ensure the job actually gets done, then cest la vie.
I don't think you can ever say it's anyone's fault for being hacked though, that's just ridiculous. _________________

I hate jailbreaking. I know it can be used for things other than piracy, but it rarely is. Most people use it to pirate. My friend pirates every game on the iPhone, and no matter what I say he won't stop. And no matter what Apple seem to do in each update to stop it, it can still be jailbroken unfortunately. So I guess I can understand Sony's reasoning behind removing Linux, but I don't know, you would think there would be another way to stop potential piracy but still let people use Linux.
And I never knew you wrote for TA, that's awesome, what's your name on it so I can look out for your reviews

Well, up to now I've been using my moniker as I have here, Windburn. From now on though, my reviews will be under "Peter L"
I've been writing there for about 6 months now! _________________

Don't mind the removal, tried linux on the ps3 once, no use for it.
