Comtinuing grim-one's point about micro and balance no other game has ever been as balanced as starcraft, in south korea starcraft is a sport. Its on tv, everyone plays it. No other pc game is loved to the extent that starctaft is. The top players get paid heaps of money just to play the game.
Here is a picture from the final of a recent starctaft tournament

I disagree with that entirely. Starcraft was just a generic Sci-Fi story with an outdated terrain system. They lauded that some of their new units didn't need ramps as an awesome feature. Wow, Total Annihilation which was released six months earlier than the original had mostly ramp-less terrain because it was actually 3D as opposed to just different levels of 2D connected by ramps. So 12(13?) and half years and they still lagging behind games released before their first game.
The only thing Starcraft has is that it's balanced enough for competitive play. Even then that's not really a positive since the majority of people you place against do everything exactly the same. |
Like usual with you Nick, I get the feeling from reading what you write, that you've never even played Starcraft?
You hated SC because of the graphics? ..really? Because I think the game still looks amazing today. Same goes for Red Alert 2, which was released 2 years after SC and still was basically 2d.
And then you say generic story? Honestly, the story is amazing. Blizzard is one company that puts amazing effort into the stories of their games.
Are you sure it's not that you blindly hate Blizzard because WC + SC are based on Warhammer + 40k?

I've owned the Starcraft Battlechest since 1999. So yes I have played it. Hell it's one of the very few RTS/Ts I actually bothered to play through the entire story. It wasn't that great, maybe to people who were new to Sci-Fi it might be great but yeah it isn't a great story when a 12 year old can pick the twists before they happen.

Again, you're focusing a different aspect to everyone else. Starcraft isn't lauded for its plot. No RTS ever has been (except possibly the horribly cheesy C&C FMV sequences, they're so bad they're good).
It's all about the multiplayer! _________________

If there's one thing that surprised me about Starcraft's plot was how well written the backstory was. My original Starcraft manual has been lost to the depths of time, but I recall it having a quite extensive section on all three playable races that detailed pretty much everything up to the starting point of the campaign. Yeah, Starcraft was pretty "standard", but the level of the storytelling back in 1998 was reasonably novel, arguably, only C&C was doing better with it's cheesy live action cutscenes.
If I wanted to play "hot metal death", I had Total Annihilation (Which I adored above Starcraft), but Starcraft had this charm to it that kept me coming back to it, and I still occasionally do to this day. _________________

anyone had any luck getting into the beta yet? i'm thinking they're just not letting anyone from australia in, since apparently they're close to their target of averaging 10000 users at any one time. _________________

I know three people in Victoria who have beta keys and I've seen one of them playing it. Two of those three also got free tickets to BlizCon so I dunno if that counts for much...

$148 is a joke. Especially when there will most likely be 3 of them all up.
$120 and id consider it. _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Probably, but I dont buy games to make money, if I buy a CE it's because I want to keep it.
Anyway they will sell out no matter what they charge, but I'll stick with the standard ed I think. Hurry up and announce a release date! _________________ XBL/PSN/Steam: BenC82

Hmm... $50 for an artbook and some other crap. Blizzard art is generally top notch, but I'm not sure I want to splurge that much on it. Although judging by the box size it will be a proper A4ish size and not a piddly little postcard thing like some CEs lately. _________________

Personally I think $150 is an alright price to pay.. but as Shadowwave says, if there's going to be 3 of them, Blizzard can shove it. _________________

I'd rather buy the inevitable "triple pack" that will actually consist of the entire game.

^ Is this just for EBgames or for every other store as well? I've only seen the EBgames newsletter announce this so far. _________________
