Anyone else noticed how often the optical drive is in use with MW? even for online play? it seems it doesn't cache any of the maps onto the HDD at all! so after playing solidly for 2 days gametime, I can squeeze maybe 1 round out of it, then it hangs, and takes 2 full minutes to eject disc, then shutdown, on reboot everything else is fine, home, hdd games, folding@home everything, but won't read any discs.

If the PS is left off for an hour or so I can get maybe a round out of it again, so its obviously the optical drive.

Anyone else had this? Is MW any more or less of a potential culprit than any other game?

Personally I think it just got jealous cause i popped in COD4 for an old school session icon_wink.gif

I havent played the PS3 version of MW2 (I got the x360 version instead). But on 99% of all my ps3 games, i gives the option to install data to the HD to speed up loading times. Have you checked the option menus in MW2 for an install option? If it did a mini install when you first played it, try deleting your save data in the Save Data Utility, above the part where you designate PS1/PS2 memory cards and then erase all MW2 and try reinstalling it.

I think it's just a combination of:

- An old console.
- Playing a game solidly for two days gametime.

Your console has finally succumb.

And the fact that is the launch, which is the most error prone PS3 console model (like it is known for it's crappy thermal compound on its CPU that will wear off after a few years of use which the problem was fixed after launch models).

To be honest, I'm expecting my console to die sooner or later.

My console has been pretty much on 5 hours a day, and is starting to freeze up a lot. I'm assuming the BD is dying... and my 360's DVD drive is dying too. I think after christmas I may have to upgrade to a 250gb slim and a new elite.

Proves babying consoles means nothing.

It seems these days they don't make any technology-related products to last three or four years. They either break down completely or need some sort of new part.

Well, that's to be expected to some extent. I mean, look at how much more complex the technology is nowadays. Your old cartridge base consoles had very few moving parts, if any, and the only real hazard was dust and dirt. And all you ever did was play games on it, nothing else.

Now you have the PS3, on which you are watching TV, BlueRays, playing games, using it as a media centre or whatever. And all those tiny moving parts, inside the disc and hard drive... and the heat generated by all the work the CPU is doing, bazillions of calculations per second and...

Sorry, went off on quite a tangent there. Anyway, yeah, you're playing it too much and it's old. Does it get especially hot during your gaming sessions? If so, then maybe more ventilation is needed. If not, then it may just be worn the heck out. It would be cool if the PS3 has some sort-of gaming odometer, I'd be curious to see how many hours you've clocked up on that thing.

Do you get the same problem when playing other games?

I find this topic interesting, because I've been wondering about the potential lifespan of my PS3 slim, especially since it's on most of the time now with Play TV being in use.

I've been noticing a few "funny noises" from my disc drive lately since I got MW2.

They are getting more frequent, but only happen once every hour.

crank...yes its every game...except games on the HDD no problems there. I ended up putting the launch away for a while and grabbed a slim...much better!

There's always problems with launch models of anything so yeah it was to be expected, just always a bummer when it does happen.
