I was just wondering who else on here (as I know that both retgy and slasher get them) downloads fansubs of new anime?

Just want to really sort out those that wait till anime gets licensed for English speakers or those that prefer to get the episode the day it airs in Japan.

I don't exactly "download" many episodes recently, I'm actually leaving Quinsisdos' broadband connection to handle the downloading at the minute and getting episodes from him by CD-R. icon_biggrin.gif
But still, I prefer to get the Japanese fansubbed episodes of anime rather than the *shudders*dubbed versions (though Amy's voice in the dubbed Sonic X isn't bad... surprisingly). Especially since it sometimes helps improve my Japanese skills. icon_smile.gif
And of course there's the waiting aspect. icon_kero.gif

Don't think too highly of some fansubs, especially those old DBZ ones which used to dirty up the language a bit more than was necessary.

stoney - a LOT of fansub groups totally suck arse

There are a few high quality groups that are even better than the professional guys that get paid for their job. Most of these high quality groups are the ones that do the popular series than stop after the anime gets licensed by the US companies who dub and publish them. But there are still a few who straggle on to finish the whole series - like I said though.. most of the time they're the crappy guys.

Still, I download it for free so I can't really say much with my only excuse being I buy the DVDs of the good series icon_wink.gif

I have loads. Too many to list, but I watch them. The things that do irritate me about some of the are:

1) Bad translations, I can generally tell by the group who sub it.

2) Low resolutions (eg. 300x250 or whatever). I always aim for 800x600 but those are really hard to get hold of. I think the only ones I've ever managed to get at 800x600 are love hina ones.

3) Fansubbed then resized (shrunk). This makes the text almost unreadable. Really irritating.

4)Fansubbed then resized (blown up). This makes the text and the image so pixelated that it's painful to watch. I assume that this is to fool people into downloading

5) Non-DiVX encoded video. MPEG-4 and alike.

These problems are rare apart from language one and resolution one.

I also only download fansubs if there is no dvd version available in the UK (well I should say if there is no DVD version with Japanese audio and English Subtitles). Amazon.co.uk is about as far as I'll go to get DVDs. I don't like getting region 1's as I need my computer to view them. Apart from Revolution OS that's perhaps the best DVD in existance.

Yeh, i'm handling most of the Frontier episodes, damn my bandwidth hurts. Wolf Pack Productions, who are doing the fan subs arn't half bad, although they do make a couple of mistakes in the translation as HYper has pointed out many a time. [shamelessadvertising]I run an IRC file server on irc.zirc.org channel #wolfpackproductions which serves the Frontier episdoes I have[/shamelessadvertising]

I download.. heaps!
But about the issue of the translation. You just need to find which group does it good. Some of the translation is just junk. The quality is very good now since broadband is common.
While we are talking about this. How do you people download it?
I do it via IRC (the right way icon_smile.gif )

There are still some anonymous FTP servers that have fansubs hidden away within them. However if one of these servers went down, and it was the only one you know, you'll probably spend a few weeks trying to find a new one icon_wink.gif.

If you're clever enough, you'll know that FTP addresses are often hidden on the same IRC channel where there are lots of FIle Servers, thens one person on the WPP chan who has a large File Server AND addresses for THREE FTP servers.

I usually use BitTorrent most of the time as it's simple and most fansub groups have the torrents grouped on a site or on their own homepage. Other than that, I used to use IRC a lot but got out of it.. it totally depends on the person serving you or what xdcc lists are available.

Just sorta waiting till I get broadband (as it's on the backbench) and I'll see what happens.. still going to finish Planetes on my 56k modem though icon_razz.gif

*eagerly awaits Monster*
