I tried taking on Old King Doran with some dignity several times, but even with Second Chance or Warding he kept destroying me. He heals himself as well. -_-
After about 5 attempts I just ended up backstabbing him and then running away haha.

I don't have too much trouble getting him critically low using a Dragon Bone Smasher. It's just that damn heal to full health that stopped me killing him fairly. You can't always rush him down because he will kill you in one hit if you misread what he's about to do. But if you don't he heals to full health!
Backstab + poison or plague FTW

Well I've picked this up again to get through before attacking dark souls. (Im assuming that demon souls talk hasnt all migrated to dark souls topic?) I put it down months ago after spending 3 days (not full days obviously, just play sessions over 3 days) trying to defeat the tower knight. Switching to arrows seems to be the trick, having finally fell him and taking out the armoured spider in like 10 minutes. Seems its better to do worlds 1-1, 2-1, 3-1 etc rather then trying to do a world in one go? apprently i need to kill an archdemon before finsihing world 1 anyway..............

Yeah you can't do a straight run on world 1 immediately.
World 2 is probably the easiest to try and complete first. Plus it nets you a soul to get better upgrades at the 2-1 blacksmith.
The good thing about Demon's Souls compared to Dark Souls is that it's easy to switch between worlds. Stuck on something and repeatedly? Just go back to the nexus and try a different level. Even if you don't finish that level, you might find some useful items. =)

does the king in the room behind the red-eyed knight count as an arch demon? (btw arrows work on him - the knight - from the right angle nicely too)

Old King Doran is just an optional mini boss, arch demons are at the end of each world.
You will need to complete either 2-3, 3-3, 4-3 or 5-3 before progressing any further in world 1.
