My dad is going to Japan for a business trip early next month. I might ask him to bring me a Wii console back if the price is cheap there.
So anyone can tell me does Wii console or gaming disc have regional protection? So which means that I can get a Jap version console and buy games in melb store.
thanks

Unless you turn to homebrew which will allow you to play games from any region on your unit. Find the guide here.

maybe what I thought was way off, but I thought that a Wii would cost significantly more in japan that it would in australia anyway?

I heard it was released at 25,000 yen in Japan, which is around $300 AUD. That is already cheaper than what we pay here, but the price may have decreased by now, I'm not sure if Japan recieved any price cuts. Even if it hasn't dropped in price over there since launch, you could probably find one in Japan for what would equivalently be $250 here.
EDIT: Just wanted to add, don't bother picking up a Japanese console. If you are primarily going to be buying PAL games, it will be too much hassle booting through the Homebrew launcher for every game you want to play, plus you run the risk that if Nintendo kills it, none of your games will work. _________________

Correct. Wii, white or black, is 25,000 yen.

Dont forget you will have to buy a stepdown power transformer if you get a japanese model that will cost an extra $50-$100 on average
