Oh duh, thanks, makes sense. It didn't enter into my mind though that the context would occur in Austrlaia where you would be called slang for Australian....where pretty much everyone is. _________________

Yea it's weird that which is why I don't get why people see the word wog as offensive, from what I see people here seem to enjoy being part of their little cultural tag. Ever since moving to Melbourne I've been asked 'Whats your Natio?' like 50 times...What the fuck do you think it is?

^ I imagine the offence comes with its origins and the intentions with which it is used.
I don't mind being called a Pom, but I haven't had to endure years/decades/generations of prejudice associated with the 'tag'. _________________

This has been blown way out of proportion, she said Wog, its not like its the end of the world. I don't find Pom offensive, most of my friends use it with love, so they say. Nothing beats the old names I used to get when I lived just off the coast of england in a few places for a while, Crappo, Donkey, such great names, each name for a different location.
I also think the 'chk chk boom' needs to die quickly. The internet is really quite sad when you look at it, but I still love it. _________________

Pom is the best slang term, no one even knows its true origins (although pomegranate is the most likely given Australia's abundance of rhyming slang) yet it's such a common term.

I worked it out
Pom = Mop (backwards)
Mop = Cleans water
Water = Comes from rain
Rain = It rains a lot in England
We can all sleep easy tonight. _________________

Well not according to my friends. Everytime I arrange to meet someone..."Ok cool see you then. So are you going to be driving round?" etc. Everytime we go out there's the mandatory "Hey man, why not drive us home?" at the end of the night etc. Then when we are working out the dd for some nights there's always the hilarious suggestion that comes up first of me. Haha oh well I deserve it, it's just annoying to hear the same jokes every weekend. How about you come up with some and I can spread them around my circle of friends increase the diversity of their jokes? _________________

i always thought it started during the convict times of Australia, where the convicts called the English navymen (who were essentially the police/guards at the time) Poms because the naval uniform hat had a red pom-pom on the top. (not just to Australia really, but anywhere that the British Navy transported convicts to their colonies.) _________________

That's one account however, much like the "Prisoners of Mother England" or "Prisoners of Her Majesty" acronyms, there's no actual documentation that dates the term back to convict times so that's a bit up in the air.

I just saw this last night on the news, and coming from Italian parents, and being proud of my heritage, I found her 'wog' comment offensive. What an ignorant dim-witted "woman".

Um, cause a real lady wouldn't be so rude. I'm definitely not questioning her sexuality, she seemed all there in that regard!

I'm pretty much unsuprised by anything girls do or say these days. On more than one occassion I've seen good looking girls go home and get into a 3 way with mates, heard a girl brag to her friends that she loves it up the arse and saw some drunk hot chick flash herself about in a night club.
The sort of lady you're talking about doesn't seem to exist anymore Cyph! _________________

They do oldschoolgamer, but not in that crowd. Also, to the others, what gives with the attitude about my opinion of that girl? I found her to be a racist twit. I'm guessing she's older than 21, she's old enough to act with a glimmer of intelligence and respect.

Well you could argue that for the huge audiences the Chaser guys pull in Australia.
If anyone's after dedicated political reporting then head over to Crikey! or check out one of the ABC's many programs. Then you'll see how dry the whole bloody thing often is and understand why 'light' news often gets the time of day. _________________ My Photos

The fact that we don't live in the 1800's anymore and women don't have to act demure and respectable anymore then men because of that whole... you know equality thing.
If you said she was a dumb bint, then fair enough cause she was, but her gender should really have nothing to do with it. _________________

I think you are getting your knickers in a twist over nothing, Benza.
This isn't an equality issue, it more a quality one. That girl acted like a drunken and offensive slapper, and a 'real' lady (in this case, by Cyph's standards) would not act that way. Same comment can easily be made about a man and his behaviour.
Well ... maybe not the slapper part. _________________
