Does playing games online like TF2 and L4D use up bandwidth? If so how much, and is there a way to check the numbers?

It doesn't take up a lot as more bandwidth equals more chance to lag. I'm not sure on the exact numbers though

Well, playing WOW uses less then if I spent that time browsing the internet, I think around 60 megs an hour. And I think other online games would use less, as there aren't as many people etc.

so it does, but the use, compared to browsing n etc, is quite insignificant?

Well, it depends what websites, and how many you go to. If you go to websites like Gamespot and IGN etc, watch a couple of movies then browsing would probably use more, I think. I had 2 computers playing WoW and it didn't use up that much. But the amount it uses really shouldn't be a problem.

I also dont have the exact figures but the reason online games dont use much bandwidth is because you already have all the data installed on your hard drive. The only information you need is where other players are and what they are doing which is the reason you need high speeds.

Just played L4D for around an hour and a half. Total usage including a little web browsing is under 10MB. You aren't going to blow more than even a modest quota playing most online FPS or RTS games - they're optimized to send the least amount of data possible for speed reasons. _________________

You can guesstimate; netgraph tells me that peak TF2 download speed is about 15kb/sec, and that's on an alltalk server when I'm running around, they're running around, and ten people are speaking at once.
I've also checked quota (Optus' My Usage page) and I think it was about 60MBs and 20MBs per hour for TF2 and L4D respectively.
They're obviously not precise figures, but it gives me a vague idea. _________________

Don't fret it buddy, most games output really really low bandwidth usage. I used to play WoW up to 13-16 hours a day back when I was an active player and it barely consumed any bandwidth. _________________
