Something that I have heard that might be expensive are the alternate costumes. In the arcades (Japan) you gain zenny by playing the game, which you can then save up and spend on new costumes for your characters.
Ono mentioned that to translate that to the home version they might do it as small XB Marketplace/PSN paid DLC. Not sure if this is concrete though.
I suspect the DLC code that comes with the SFIV CE will be for all the first set of alternate costumes for the characters. I would think there are going to be 2nd and 3rd sets of alternate costumes in the future.

I've been hearing talk of 3 editions of Street Fighter IV (Standard, Collector's and Super Collector's edition), but to my knowledge I thought there were only 2 editions (Standard and Collectors - the one with the 2 figures, anime movie, and DLC).
From what I've seen on AU websites there are just the 2 editions, and the middle collector's edition doesn't exist.
Just some more info, I read that the DLC will be 5 costumes. For which characters I have no idea....
EDIT:
Also learnt yesterday that the game will be Region Locked on 360.
Confirmed by Seth Killian/s-kill of Capcom: http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/13041477/SF_4_and_RE5_region_free

That DLC is a bit of a let down. Would've preferred a new tournament mode or new levels or something instead of a new dress for Chun Li (or whoever).
I for one wont be getting the Collectors Edition. I think they are a waste of money when all I want is the game. _________________

I was trying to get into SSF2TRHDLETTERLETTERLETTERLETTER but I kept getting absolutely thrashed by Chun Li in Round 2 of Arcade on Easy mode. I just couldn't understand why I was getting annihilated so badly when I was relatively competent at 3D fighting games.
But then I found this rather amusing guide.
But it actually worked! Taking its advice into account I made Chun Li my bitch and proceeded all the way to taking out Bison (admittedly after a few tries). I was just amazed at what a difference a few minor changes to my play style did.

^ How the hell were you playing the game? The game is pretty easy on er easy. Unless you don't lose a round and fight Akuma. Then you will get owned. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I suspect my problem was too much jumping around. I think I subconsciously thought I was playing some sort of 2D Smash Bros.

From 1UP
| Quote: | In this week's edition of Famitsu magazine, Capcom unveiled their plans for downloadable content for the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions of Street Fighter IV, due out mid-February worldwide. The content, which has been confirmed for the Japanese marketplace only at this point, will launch alongside the game's February 12 Japan launch and continue on a weekly basis for the next month, costing 320 MS Points or 400 yen in the PlayStation Store a shot.
What is it, exactly? Alternate costumes for all 25 characters, divvied out in groups of five. Here is the lineup:
- February 12: Zangief, E. Honda, Rufus, Abel, El Fuerte
- February 19: Chun Li, C. Viper, Sakura, Rose, Cammy
- February 26: Ryu, Ken, Akuma, Gouken, Dan
- March 5: Vega, Sagat, Balrog, Bison, Seth
- March 12: Guile, Blanka, Dhalsim, Gen, Fei Long
- April 30: All-in-one Pack (1000 MS Points, 1200 yen) |
This totally sucks. This SHOULD ship with the game. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I think 1000 MS points isn't as bad as it seems. The reason for this was said by Ono. In the arcade version you unlock costumes by playing the game (ie putting money into the machine for a credit). As you play and win, you earn zenny which can be spent on unlocking costumes for you which are saved to your account (using your SFIV player card). Since in the console version, you have unlimited credits, they translated this to paid DLC.
Sure we had to pay for the game in th first place ($120 dollars in Australia OUCH!), but then again, the console version has ALOT more than the arcade version (LOTS more modes + unlimited credits for arcade mode). At the moment 3D graphics analysts (like those guys who found out Halo 3 was only 640P), have found that the Xbox 360 version is graphically superior to the PS3 version (only slightly). Yeah I know, it doesn't matter so much in Street Fighter. Street Fighter is all about the fighting engine.
Think about how much money you'd have to insert into the arcade machine to unlock all the costumes, plus the fact that you have to actually win matches to earn zenny (correct me if I'm wrong about the winning part) to buy those costumes.
Personally I don't mind throwing down 1000 MS points for the whole costume pack. Maybe because I love Street Fighter so much, so maybe I'm just crazy fanboy about it (I almost shelled out $60 for a Mad Catz SFIV 360 Faceplate/Console Skinz, but resisted - my Assassin's Creed one still looks perfectly matched to my 360 Pro)
I'm still curious as to what the 5 costume DLC is that comes with the Collector's Edition (what character's does it include).

^ I'm paying $199.95, which really isn't worth the money case it's basically $80 for a movie and booklet/figures, for the game already. I think asking for another $20 for costumes is really a bit much.
Btw, link me up for the graphics comparison. I won't mind reading that. Kind of feel validated going with the 360 version now. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Gimme a little bit LeonJ. I'll have to go digging around to find that forum and post.
EDIT:
Found it!

Also the SRK thread I found this in. (it goes off topic after a while).
http://forums.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=174559
Also more info that was part of the info that was revealed with the DLC info.

Latest Famitsu scans reveal new info on software update and DLC:

http://img43.imagevenue.com/img.php?...122_213lo.jpg#
Some interesting excerpts:
*SNIP - DLC info was here*
- Planned game update sometime in the future will give you a Championship mode, which facilitates play in a tournament format, allowing you to earn more Grade Points. Clearly this is for Ranked match... but I don't see anything that says if there is an unranked/player-match Championship mode.
- Championship mode, as with Ranked and Player matches, can be played using the Arcade-interrupt method (or whatever it's called; under player profile, there's an Arcade-interrupt setting that you can change)
- If you rank in for Championship mode, or any of the Challenge modes (I think; the text is not very clear), you can choose to upload your replay file. Replay files can be viewed by anyone.

Also in the same issue, Famitsu gave SF4 a 9,8,8,9 in its review of the game. It's here if you wanna read:

Saw this running at an arcade at lunchtime today, looks magnificent. Even the character select screen looked gorgeous with the artwork profile shots.
Like Eggy I'd very much like to know whether the CE costumes will be unique or whether they'll pop up as part of the planned DLC. My guess is that they'll either be:
1. Unique, but I hope not since I'm not getting the CE.
2. One of the set packs. The fact that the CE has five costumes and they're doing the DLC in five character bursts probably isn't a coincidence.
3. If they wanted to be real pricks, the CE costumes might be a sample across the DLC packs, ie one out of each set of five, though that's probably just too sadistic.

I don't understand why people would pay money to just have their character look slightly different. I don't understand it in LBP and I don't understand it here.
Now, if it actually changed gameplay somehow.... _________________

I think DLC that changes gameplay in a fighting game is a bad idea. Esspecialy one as competitive as Street Fighter. The only thing I could see justifying it would be an entirley new charecter, otherwise I just think it would mess with game balance too much.
That said this is still fucking ridiculous. _________________

When you become hardcore/top tier at fighting games, trust me, you are going to want to differentiate your character from n00bs and even other pros. It's like your logo or whatever. Most of the time when you have become quite famous/good at a particular character that clothing configuration will be locked to you/know by all. E.g. RX who is one of the world's best players on Third Strike using Urien always uses a gold Urien. Anyone else caught using Gold Urien at tournaments will be frowned upon by the hardcore community. It's nothing serious, it's just a bit of fun and personalisation.
I hope SFIV has interchangeable items and costumes (like VF5, Tekken 5 and Soul Calibur IV) firstly for the reasons posted above and sometimes it yeilds hilarious results. I know a few times I logged onto Soul Calibur IV to have an online battle and would just crack up at my opponent's get-up. Also I was trying for the 10 wins online achievement (only to unlock more costume options and not cuz i' man achievement whore) and get getting beaten by the smallest of margins. So made a chick custom character with no pants I fucking won 10 games in a row!! The POWER of costumes!
I don't mind paying a tiny bit for lots of content but i'm normally against it. Like if they released 200 new costumes or something I would expect to pay for that, but around 20 costumes or so should always be free imo. _________________

I just hope the Limited Edition costumes AREN'T for public comsuption. It would be nice to be able to have a real limited set of cool custumes for a game as big as this. Like the gold lancer in gears 2, without everybody laughing at you.
I prefer set costumes BUT with different colours. So I wouldn't mind the ability to have like 3-4 high quality costumes per character with the ability to customise the colours. I do like my Ryu in black with a yellow headband. _________________ Shin J Leon.

The fully customisable costumes (like VF or SC) topic was addressed by Ono last year. He said that he didn't want that in the game as having Ryu in a baseball cap, for example, would ruin the iconic image of the characters (example, Chun-Li's hair buns and spiked bracelets, or Ryu's headband etc).
As for the extra costumes, I was still disappointed that they didn't include the arcade alternate costumes for all characters as regular unlockables and instead have a 2nd set of alternate costumes as paid DLC.
I bet there will be a 2nd set of DLC costumes in the future, and it'll be a staggered release, the same way as this 1st set.
Colour edit mode is something I could have liked to see, but I wonder how they would impliment it in a 3D engine where the costumes colours are textured and not paletted like in previous Street Fighter games.

Quiet easily I'd imagine. You could just change the hue/saturation etc of the textures. _________________

Costumes are good, when you unlocked them or buy them in-game like Tekken.
Though at least the functional things like the tournament thing is free.
