I guess this means Microsoft is trying to be considered "cool, hip and rad" by the kids now. Anyway now I have that out of the way, apparently the special preview test for NXE started today for a large amount of Live users. Anyone get an invite?

Did I miss the meeting where society decided that Nintendo Mii style avatars were cool? Because personally I find them to be the most crude, expressionless representatives of humans I have ever seen. Really, I think the characters in the Cyanide & Happiness webcomic have more expression.

Hand drawn charecters will always have more expression then a customisable avatar. That's just common sense really.

Unless it's drawn by Tim Buckley.

Damn! Didnt get in icon_sad.gif

Oh well I have too many new games to play anyway. Still would have been nice to copy Fallout 3 to my harddrive for faster loading.

To be fair, they do sem to be microsoft's main focus, i have no idea what the other features will be as every article i've read mentions avatars and little else.

The best feature, in my opinion, is hard disk installations.

Not only will games load a teensy bit faster, but it will completely remove the drive strain games like Fallout and GTA cause and people who have defective disc drives, like my old 360, will be able to install and play games off the hard disc without getting their 360 repaired.

I. Am. Excited.

Agree, hard drive installation will stop the drive noise for FIFA09, Fable 2 and Fallout 3, since those types of game for me are the ones where the drive reads from different parts of the disk, e.g. to load different teams, textures, sound.

The 360's should run cooler (?) since the DVD won't be spinning? But then again the HDD will get a workout from now on.

Ever try finding a game starting with 'Z' on the Marketplace? The UI needed a bit of an overhaul.

IGN have a video up showing the noise difference after installing a game, seems very cool.

You can find it here.

I just installed it from that link and holy CRAP is it awesome! So fast!!! O_O

Just note you CAN NOT use Xbox Live till the 19th, it just won't let you connect till then. Also note, DivX playback and creating an avatar is also blocked till the 19th.

Far Cry off hard disk is awesome icon_biggrin.gif

Hard disk games are AMAZING. Far Cry 2, fully installed takes just 4.8gb and is BEYOND SILENT!

You know the fan noise of the 360 with no disc in while sat on the dashboard? THATS AS LOUD AS IT GETS! And it loads a LOT faster. I can actually see the popin crap popping in in much more rapid succession during play as well. It is amazing.

Agreed the game installs are awesome. Fable 2 was probably one of the loudest games I have in terms of constant disk access, now I cant hear it at all....just like a PS3! I can see this update reducing the amount of RROD due to less strain on the DVD drive and less heat produced.

And the ingame dash is awesome. Has access to a lot more (basically everything you can access from the main dashboard you can access in game now) it loads MUCH faster as well which is nice. Only thing is now its in the middle of the screen rather than on the left hand side, which means you cant see as much of the game/vid etc behind it - not really an issue though.

For some reason I thought they changed the achievement unlocked message, but they havent, I just tested it out.
