So I just turned on my Xbox and to my surprise was prompted to update.
I applied for the beta program but didn't receive an email, so I've been running the other version of the firmware. Avatars are nice and all, but it's sure great to have Live back again! _________________

A friend and I are currently attempting to install a $55 120GB laptop HDD into our 360's instead of the official Xbox 360 one. It's definately possible, but we haven't met with such success just yet (on that note if anyone could walk a couple of amateurs through loading a bootable DOS image onto a Flash Drive that would be swell). _________________

How to make a bootable DOS flash drive
Check your BIOS settings and in the boot priority list, put the flash drive as the first in the list.
Then just follow the instructions in your link.
Sounds tempting, might look into it if I find myself wanting to install games to my hard drive after NXE... _________________

I was under the impression that the 360 could detect non-standard drives and would then not let you use it for anything other than media?
Even if that did work completely, there wouldn't be any way to transfer all your old 20GB HDD content would there.. although for people worried about voiding the warranty, you only send your console in when it RRODs or whatever, so that wouldn't be a problem. _________________

In the end I don't think it's worth the cost (or effort) of getting a 120GB drive, it just means that you have to wait 5-10 minutes every time you want to install a new game.
Could be worth it for videos or music though, if you really wanted it. _________________

I've done it. Let me know what you're having trouble with. See below for my post on another forum...

Nope, it's been fine for me. And yes, you can transfer your data across
Here's my post from another forum I'm on....
I did have to hexedit the hddhackr application as my SATA hdd wasn't detected. But I was doing it from a laptop. HEX editing hddhackr.com just tells it where to find your sata card rather than relying on it to autodetect. As for copying the data across I didn't have to hex edit for that. Strange the author made it a hex edit rather than just a switch :stupido3:
HERE's what I ended up following. It also has links to all the apps and files you need. To flash the drive I removed my lappy drive and popped in the new 120gb. For the data transfer I had a SATA USB caddy I popped the drives in. The data transfer does seem to take quite a while. It may be worth deleting any data you don't need to save time. In particular delete any games intalled to the HDD by NXE! One issue I found with transferring the data in Vista. Xplorer extreme needs to be run as administrator otherwise it won't see the drive, but I coldn't drag the backed up files across. I guess because windows explorer was being run as my normal user. I ended up just turning off UAC and it worked fine.
As I was doing it all via a laptop, I did not had a floppy to boot to dos from. So I also had to stuff around creating a bootable dos usb stick. I ended up using disks and instructions from BootDisk.com. Specifically the dos6.22 disk and the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool Version 2.0.6
In the end after a little time and $55 I now have a 120GB WD BEVS HDD in my 20GB original caddy with all my data transfered. _________________

Well this thread just got very interesting, very fast... I didn't even know this sort of thing was possible! I'm going to be giving this some serious thought. Upgrading my PS3 hard drive was one of the best things to happen to my console. I'm can only assume the same thing for my 360. _________________

Did you ever sign up for the beta?
I turned it on just then, signed in and out a couple of times and nothing has happened as of yet. Sucks. _________________

Now that I've been playing around with the new interface, it's starting to feel a bit easier to navigate now that I know where everything is so I'm starting to like it a bit more now. It did take me a little while to find where to redeem my codes for GOW2. It seems the only way to do it is to bring the guide up and go through the marketplace that way, I can't see anywhere to do it from the dash. _________________

Ah, I forgot to do that! Thanks for reminding me (I got my copy with codes before they were available, so had to wait). _________________ GAMEparents

The new guide button is awesome. It has everything you need. So much so that I dont see the point of the rest of the interface?
Yeah I signed up a while ago for the beta but thought thwy were all done handing them out? OPr would get some sort of email?
Anyway, hard drive loading works a TREAT. Need a 120gig HDD now. Hopefully fixes my fable 2 woes. _________________

It seems like to me the new dashboard is just their to look cool and offer up some ads for new games and downloadable content, like ManeKast said the guide really does everything and does it a lot simpler than the dash. _________________

You guys are crazy, I find the dashboard extremely simple to use... All the guide does is forward you to other dashboard windows. Seems like a wasted effort opening it for that.

I agree Peveus in that the new dash is easy to use.
That said I also agree that the new guide is easier to navigate because its so much like the old one. Ill actually end up using the guide to navigate to the dash a lot more. _________________

I guess I am comparing the dash to the new guide in terms of ease to use but I am getting used to the new dash, some parts are better than before but some are a little more awkward like the friends list but they do give you the option really by making the guide so useful so on a whole it's definitely an improvement but the main reason why I'm happy with it is the fact that it doesn't sound like an international runway in my lounge room when I'm playing a game now. _________________

Is the new dash laggy at all like the current one? For example when in game and you press the guide button in the current version it sort of lags a little when it slides over the screen. Have they fixed that up now? _________________

It takes longer to get into the dashboard from games or starting up (i.e. loading screen), but quicker to navigate through the guide. _________________

Umm... I haven't found that at all. The dashboard loading time is exactly the same. _________________

I really dont see much of an improvement bar HDD loading. The guide buttons there, sure, but with the friends list. Scrolling ACROSS thoughy my friends is nowhere near as fast and "at a glance" the old friends list was.
Small complaint but new interfaces should simplify things not make them more complicated.
Avatars are OK, will be better when more people get them.
Also, my headset MIC wont work with anyone not using NXE? Anyone else had that? _________________

I have a feeling I'll use up my 120GB HDD pretty quick with installs, I'm already down to 70GB remaining (and I don't actually have NXE on my system).
