So for those who are still using this streaming method... How do you cope with having a really huge hard disk full of media that is constantly being updated?
I find it quicker to just chuck the latest episode of Californication on a USB stick and take it over that way than to index the media servers all the time...
Or perhaps you would suggest only using a server for things that are going to stay on the HDD for a really long time? Like music and stuff?
So do you have to index every time you want to add a new album? _________________

ahh. my laptop is right next to my ps3 and *cough* sd *cough* tv ;__;
So I find it easier just to watch/listen to media on my lappy. But that being said, even 5-6 gb of content seems to take a while to refresh on my media server comp.
I'm pretty patient though. I usually start refresh and walk away, do chores etc. Come back and its done. Usually I wait till I have maybe 2-3 gb of stuff so its actually worth refreshing the library.
and
genxevo, yes that would be it. THanks I'll go ammend the guide now. And I noticed this thread still isn't stickied yet ;__; _________________

Hi Zhou and all... we've got 2 PC's running TVersity and been running it since the early versions... we've got 3 PS3's (used to be 4) in our share house... and there is sooOOooo much downloading happening its not funny...
Each PC (server) runs a terabyte external HDD via USB. Each PS3 is run wirelessly (prefer to be cabled, but a largish house). And everyone is happy... there are some jitters, which only happen via wireless... but we can't live without this setup anymore... can't imagine life without it... and extremely impressed with the performance, when considering there are 3 PS3's streaming off possibly the same server, sometimes the same file over wireless, streaming a file off an external HDD via USB.
In fact... at one stage we had a 360 streaming off it too with no issues...
Refreshing the server with new downloads is very quick, I beleive it looks for changes and syncs... however changing the encoding settings can improve performance... you can set it to dedicate its encoding for Playstation only, this can reduce the workload on the PC dramatically!
But yep... good article... nice to hear people are catching on! _________________

How long did the initial indexing process take for you guys?
I know I'll probably end up spending another weekend getting my set up to work smoothly. _________________

Yeh, not long... our main server has about 700Gb on it currently of video... wen we dump new files in regularly (prison break, heroes, clone wars, terminator one tree hill... etc) as they come down, we hit refresh... and then walk over to the PS3... and wait for the file to pop up... usually only a few minutes.
I would guess it has something to do with the PC itself... see, since we have our PS3's and laptops... the PC's just serve, we decided to removed most applications leaving basics like uTorrent or Vuze, TVersity and AVG antivirus... havn't run a separate firewall for years now with no hassles or dramas...
One PC is a dual core and no isssues there... but mine is an old skewl XP 2200 (single core), and chugs along like a good workhorse... the media server freezes up sometimes, but I attribute that to her age...
One thing though... the server should be hardwired to the router (most people do)... but if you run the server wirelessly and the PS3 too... it'll drop out alot. _________________

Apologies... just read it again... initial indexing took a while yes... about 20-30 mins for our 700Gb of video...
Updates are fairly quick after... _________________

You know what is missing from the first post?
A link to the TVersity download page.
Yeah, I switched from Media Player 11 to TVersity after the MP11 media server started having errors and cutting out. _________________

Yeh... sometimes stresses out, especially when our PC's had a host of applications running on them and they wud do their updates or watever... hence we decided to re-image them and leave it basic.
Router... we had a Linksys and Belkin (both wireless G) at one stage... running in a 2 story house... so 1 upstairs, 1 down... connected by one long ethernet cable... worked a treat.
We've moved into another 2 story house now... but have bought the new Apple router... wireless N (not that the PS3 can use it anyway)... but it covers the whole house... for general browsing and the TVersity network. Highly recommend it... seems to handle the load pretty well.
If you do experience regular drop outs... bring the router closer... at least for testing purposes, and if it persists, get a new router... I'd recommend spending the coin on a good one... as an IT geek... i'd recommend Linksys or Apple. _________________

Here's a good one: PS3 Media Server
Supports Linux, OS X and Windows.
| Quote: | PS3 Media Server

* DVD ISOs images / VIDEO_TS Folder transcoder
* OGG/FLAC/MPC/APE audio transcoding
* Thumbnail generation for Videos

* Display camera RAWs thumbnails (Canon / Nikon, etc.)
* ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders
* Support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb
* Internet TV / Web Radio support with VLC, MEncoder or MPlayer

^ Thanks so much for that. It's so awesome. Just turn it on and it works great! No need to sync files, it just accesses the HDD!
I think I'm in love.

Since I got a 26" samsung lcd monitor in my room now, I just have my ps3 connected through wifi, and with tversity that gets really bad lag sometimes esepcailly when you fast forward/rewind (no problems when using wire). Though I do have a feeling its got something more to do with my router than tversity itself.. _________________

Try rewinding by using the seek time function, but I'm not sure about how to fix general playback.. I'd also recommend the Java Media Server above... more PS3 specific options to tweak
I never really 'got' wireless internet either... _________________

I have a very minimal setup from my MacBook Pro using Vuze (used as a media server) over a Wireless N Network (Netgear DG834N). Very simple yet very effective.
Although I like the look of PS3 Media Server posted by 303-Acid, I'll probably give that a look soon.

I'm using my Macbook Pro and Medialink.
Detects it upon startup and is a synch to use.
It also buffers really well, so if my computer dies I usually have a few minutes to get the power back on before the feed runs out. _________________

I was gonna jump into this thread and sing the praises of PS3 Media Server, but 303-acid has already done so a while ago. Can't stress enough how easy it is to setup. I can now watch all of my 720p MKV files by streaming them from the computer to the ps3, woohoo!

Just wanna say thanks for the awesome thread guys. I was trying to stream avi's through wmp11 the other day and ready to tear my hair out in frustration until I came across this thread. Good stuff!
Using tversity now without too many problems (flv video is flakey at best, but I think that might be more of an issue with my crappy, underpowered laptop)
