Hey guys im looking for some suggestions to some laptops. Now its for my brothers daughter she is 12. The main stuff she will use it for will be school work (word, spreadsheets and powerpoint), Internet, and burning cd's. The price range there looking at is $ 800 up to about $1600 max. So im just looking for a few suggestions for me to look at. She won't be playing games on it. just something good and does the job. Thanks guys.

Base Apple Macbook* or Lenovo Thinkpad. This suggestion comes from working at an IT Helpdesk at a school that deals with Prep to Year 12. The Thinkpads are the toughest laptops around but are ugly as sin but the Macbooks are clearly more robust than anything other than the Thinkpads. Plus it'll appeal to her girly sense of fashion/style/whatever.
*Even if they're just running Windows.

Why a laptop for a 12 year old? It wont last long and a desktop would be a much better option imo.

Laptops are cheaper in the long run. Not to mention a $1500 laptop today can kick the pants off a $5000 desktop of two years ago. Not only that parents can have the child in view so they can make sure they're sticking to the rules of computer use set by the parents rather than having to sit in the study and constantly be looking over the shoulder.
Also it teaches kids accountability/responsibility which people these days seem to be lacking.

Easily good enough. I recently moved my Godfather and his family over to one of those after their PC absolutely died to viruses and they love it. The only issue I can foresee is that it only has 1 GB of RAM (I have 4 GB myself >.>) but it is doubtful a 12 year old would have any issue with that

I would suggest that if you know any Uni or TAFE students that don't want a Mac to get it through them. You get $150 off as a student discount. _________________
