^ I don't think it will work because it is formatted as a PS3 internal drive.

Also, I think when the PS3 formats the drive it stores the serial number or MAC address of the PS3 console, so if you tried to put the HDD into another PS3, it will ask you to format it first.

Sorry mate, but I don't know what else to suggest. Good luck.

just a quick question,
my 60 gb died, but i have some data on it i want (pictures etc.) now if i just get a 2.5" sata hdd enclosure, does anyone know if i can just put the hdd out of the ps3 into the enclosure, then just plug it in though usb to my other ps3 to take off the data?
or do i have to do alot more then just that? if so what else?

had to put alot of my pictures from my computer onto something, and at the time i didnt have an external hdd laying around, so the ps3 is where they all went. so im desperate to get them off the ps3's hdd before i send it back for repair.

You've lost all the data on the HDD. Samething happened to me when my PS3 crapped itself.

I tried an external case, didn't work.

I used a mates PS3 to see if I can get into the drive, didn't work.

I admitted defeat and sent it off with the HDD, never to see my data again. icon_sad.gif

ok thanks guys, hopefully my old ipod has all the missing pictures still on there, stupid of me not to put them on a dvd or something instead of just the ps3.

I just completed a Hard Drive swap last night and was snagged by something I hadn't been alerted to by this thread. It seems that the latest firmware (2.7) is TOO large to be held in the PS3's internal memory and spills over onto the hard drive. When you put the new HD in, it refuses to format it.

The solution is to ensure that on your external drive (possibly the same one used to back up all your data) you have the latest firmware update which can be downloaded from the playstation website. It must be contained in the following folder: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

^ I noticed that recently as well. I just figured my PS3 was bitching out and thought nothing of it. But that is a sucky extra step to have to take.

All this stuff should be added to the first post to avoid massive confrustrusion.

So the only way to get all the data onto the new HDD is to also have an external one? That sucks.

Yes, that's right. Just borrow a friends iPod or external drive if you haven't already got one.

Quick question lads:

I updated my ps3 the other day to a 320gb hdd, did a full backup and restore and everything. Yet tekken 5 DRO and kung fu ragdolls are giving me an error relating to them being locked or something.

Is there a way to unlock them, or will I have to delete them, and reinstall/download again, thus using up another of my 5 downloads I have?

Also quick note, couldnt see anything in the threads, but during my quest to backup, Toolman suggested I use Seagate Disk Wizard. Sure enough it converted my Seagate 120gb freeagent which was in NTFS format to Fat32 in not even 30 seconds. And I didnt even need to split the drive. Its just one whole 120gb fat32 partition. Definitely reccomended, as messing around using dos commands is a pain in the arse.

Just upgraded my PS3 to a 500GB drive and I had a similar issue with downloadable titles. You need to go into Network -> Account Management -> Deactivate System, then Activate System. This should re-enable anything downloaded.

Not happy...just tried to restore my 40gb's data on the 60gb machine, it only let's you put the users across, no save files no game data no games, just the users, pics, music, and vids
So I need to download all the games again, transfer over all the save files by copying each one and even need to remember the log in details for each user name
So it has me thinking if you send your ps3 back to Sony and they send a different ps3 back will you have the same problems as me or is it because the are 2 different models of ps3?
Probably answering my own question but it says in the manual about different machines and back up utility and what it can transfer between machines and it's pretty much what I said

Edit: just logged into my account and all my saved data appeared so I didn't need to sit In front of the other tv copying everything, still need to download the games though, but I just found that weird that you needed to log in to bring up the save data from the other machine, just wish I knew earlier now.

Could I just buy this one? And it would work properly?

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/320GB-2-5-SATA-HDD-Hard-Disk-Drive-4-SONY-PS3-Console_W0QQitemZ270429388404QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Consoles?hash=item3ef6d8fe74&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A15%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

And I think I will have to get an external one to backup my old one. Or could I just borrow an external HDD from a friend, if I knew someone with one? Would it have to erase the HDD to back up onto it? Could I copy the files, say, to my Mac, then put them back on after it's done? Or maybe someone with a decent sized iPod Classic or something...

yep that hdd will work.
im pretty sure the hdd will need to be in fat32 (as in the borrowed hdd), so if its not you will need to format it to get it to work, otherwise if it is its fine.
and i think buttmouth said he used a ipod to back his up (or someone did) so yeh you can do that.
the mac idea probably isnt the best way to go, you still need a thumb drive or something to get it on the mac, and then its another pain to put it back on the ps3. plus if using an external hdd you use the back up utility and it backs up everything including downloaded games and puts it all back on how it was before you changed hdd's

you don't have to wipe the drive - just split the portion and then format the new size .

To those that have upgraded their PS3's HDD, have you ever on occasion got the message "Cannot find hard disk" when you turn the console on? I've been getting it maybe once every 2-4 weeks starting a couple months ago. Anyway, I did some digging and its' apparently because most people that upgrade the HDD get a SATAII drive, while the controller on the PS3's motherboard is SATA1. No biggie, because the newer HDD's can autosense and will operate at SATA1 speeds, but because the PS3 boots up so quick, it can miss the 'handshake' with the HDD. If this happens, you can put a jumper on the HDD to force it to SATA1 at all times. I'll be doing that, but I realised that normal jumpers are too big for the tiny drives, you'll need to get a smaller sized jumper.

if you can afford an external hard drive, you can easily afford an internal one dude. Also keep in mind game files and the such cannot be installed to external drives. It must also be formatted to fat32 to be read by the ps3.

No I can't. I rarely get money and they both cost more than I ever spend on games, around $120 each. It would take me a few months to get the both of them.

I've just been replacing my HDD for a 500GB Western Digital one and knowing all the stories of stripped screws, was very careful.

The blue one came out no problem at all, easy as. Same for the two on the outside edge of the caddy (the same side of the blue screw), the other two however, one just about came out, the other stripped. I've just had to drill the head off of the bugger to get the old drive out of the caddy.

The issue I found was that I had two different types of screws in the caddy. The ones that came out easy had a clean simple cross pattern to them. The two that were a pain had some diagonal lines to the cross design as well. I know there's proper names for these different screw designs, just cba to go look it up.

Anyways, perhaps this goes some way to explaining why some people have problems and some don't. It could be luck of the draw as to what screws are in there. Even the bad design one I managed to get out normally was partially stripped. So I think you have to be fairly lucky to get those buggers out.

For reference, the screw I had the most problem with was the back left one as you face the drive through the install hole in the case.

The system is restoring now, I am intrigued however at not needing to do anything with having the latest firmware on a mem stick/backup device as well. Since I know a few people lately have had that problem (Island Wolf and I'm sure someone else did too). Mine was on firmware 2.80 before I started and after the initial format, the system still reported it was on 2.80 fine. So unless it's going to ask for me to provide that during the restore phase, it hasn't been needed for me. If others have/do need it even with firmware 2.80, perhaps there's more differences between the different PS3 models than we've been led to believe. Mine is a launch 60GB model. More likely though I reckon that story about memory footprint reduced for 2.80 has meant it is smaller overall and now fits into system memory again.

^ Yeah, it's fine. I'd personally pay the bit extra for a Seagate because I've always trusted them, never had one die (i've still got a 9yr old 40GB still working), but that drive will work on the PS3
