I ordered a Western Digital 320GB 2.5" SATA II 3Gb/s WD3200BEVT - 5400rpm 8MB
Cost me $135 + $15 for p&h, I'm sure it could be cheaper if you look around, i recommend shopbot or static ice.
I think that's what chopbusted used.
Basically you need to ask for a 2.5 inch sata drive which runs at 5400rpm.
I think these are laptop HDD's but i'm not sure.
Hope that helps.

^ about one in a hundred billion? But
just make sure when you order/buy you check its 2.5''
There are two possible sizes. There is 2.5'' (lappy hard drive)
and the bigger 3.5'' (the ones found in your desktop and some external drives.)
so to reiterate, 2.5'' is the size you're going with. 5400rpm and a 8mb cache.
and too long? No chance. They're all standard size when it comes to length. _________________

I got a Travelstar 5K320 for $139 (shipped) from Stonebridge Computers (some online store).
Works pretty well I suppose. The specs for those in the know:
Hitachi - 320GB TravelStar 5K320 2 .5 SATA 3.0Gb s HDD - 5, 400RPM, 8Mb, 4 Data Heads(2 Disks), 5.5ms latency.
Don't have a clue what they mean... _________________

no problem, but just as a heads up,
i noticed you said you were going to get the one with 7200rpm, as Theman said on page 1 of this topic,
| theman wrote: | | I might get the 7200rpm drive. The temperature difference in load is like 1-2 degrees but you can up improvements in loadtime of up to 18%! The above quote looks better on the link I supplied because the OP made the effort of colour coding his results for easy viewing. With the increase in PSN titles, loading access of the harddrive is a factor I need to consider. That plus the increased developer use of the harddrive to install game data (MGS4, DMC4). |
but chopbusted points out in the post after that by going with the 5400rpm one, you can save up to $100, the tradeoff being something like a 1-2 sec increase in load times when loading data. _________________

hmm $50 too me is a lot to pay - $100 is a lot to pay but if i cant save more then $100 from a Brisbane based retailer then there's not much sense as i was going for the speeded up load times , its sort of like when i got my PC ( well not really but here gos )
when i got my PC i notice a lot try to save a few 100 here and there were as rather then getting the best i went for a high end that was balanced i didnt go all out but rather chose old models when i did tho i went all out by getting the maximum in that field if 300 = a 50% boost i was there - if there was only a 10% tho i wasn't interested.
thx for the heads up tho ( only thing im worried about is cooling )

Mikezilla2 .... hope I don't sound rude here, but everything you are asking has already been discussed in this thread.
Have a careful read through the first few pages mate, I'm sure it will help you out and give you a better understanding of the process.

Hey y'all.
I've installed a 320 in my PS3, and every thing is working fine, backed up
and restored with an iPod and what not.
However, I'm trying to use the removed 40GB disk drive as an external
drive for my laptop. When I plugged it in the computer installed drivers,
but can't see the drive. I'm rather confused...
Any ideas??
EDIT: Swissknife was the answer. Programs could see the drive, just not
windows itself. So I reformatted with Swissknife and now I've got a new drive!
Thanks BurnZ _________________

During my experiments with my PS3's HDD, trying to backup my s**t. I was able to get my laptop (running Vista) to see the drive but I was unable to get into my files.
What you need to do to atleast see the drive is go into Computer Management or Device Manager and you should be able to do something. (Well in CM you should beable to format it but in DM you should at least see it... which doesn't really help formatting it) _________________

Nooooooo! I lost all my Uncharted Trophies!! I only had one more to get!
Luckily its a damn fun game to play through, so that's cool. At least my
Eden trophies are all in tact... I guess I did something wrong with my backing up...

I loaded up the Trophy Collection and it only synced up Eden.
I was confused so I put Uncharted in the drive and loaded it up.
Sure enough it says I've got hundreds of Medals still, but its loaded a new
slot in my Trophy Collection that says 0% and all the trophies have
padlocks and ???'s. Total balls. I'll have to delete my save files so
the game thinks I have no medals or something...
It's good that you can still my e-wang though Burnz
EDIT:I managed to get them back! Sorry for clogging the thread with Trophy discussion. _________________

Are you referring to the 'please wait while trophies are being synchronized' progress bar? I've heard of this problem happening but all it took to rectify it was to wait for the synch bar to appear again.
If, even after that, you're Uncharted trophies aren't registering, I really don't know what you could do to regain them. Other than achieving them again... but that might be a little too much trouble. Sucks to hear it :( _________________

BoomBoom i feel your pain as my trophies are gone too.
I backed up and restored and while i look at my profile they are there, when i go to my trophy collection the cupboard was bare.
Oh well, more play time for me i guess, a bit of a bugger actually as some of those warhawk ones were quite flukey.

Nice rhyme. Like I said, I got mine back after all. Here's how:
1. Make sure you include the game install and all your saves when you make a backup.
2. When you restore you will have no trophies and you can't sync them.
3. Load up the games you have trophies for - then check the list and it should sync (In my case it sync'd up at this point - but Uncharted said I had 0%. )
4. Load one of your save files and start playing the game.
5. Quit the game.
6. Check your trophy list again and it will resync, but this time it should update properly.
As long as your PSN profile still has all your trophies listed - that should work.

We should prepare a guide for using a server instead, because in most (all) cases it would be easier than swapping the HDD. _________________

I just run all my movies off my portable hard drive. I have 2 computers and 2 laptops in the house able to stream to ps3 using tversity, the only thing bad about it is it lags like crazy when streaming over wireless. Its fine when the comp/lappy is connected through good old cat5 cable
*Edit*
yeah that would be a good idea, the only real reason i wanted to swap out for a bigger hard drive was for media purposes. Game installs and all that arent really an issue for me Might start that guide now _________________
