My 320GB Hitachi Travelstar 5K320 arrived today (a birthday present).

So I had to download my saves etc to my bro's i-pod (it wouldn't work with my i-phone, very lame) and then do the swap.

Currently D/L'ing Warhawk and expansion packs etc again. I was able to transfer videos across though without any problems.

After all was said and done, I had 261GBs left after the HDD formatting.

All in all, it was a fairly hassle free process. The worst part for me was transferring all the saved games from different accounts onto the new HDD.

Also, it would have been great if there was a 'copy all' feature for all the saved game files and PS/PS2 save files. This meant I had to individually copy everything onto the i-pod, and then everything back onto the new HDD one by one. (Note: I was able to copy all the video files from the i-pod in one hit though, so that was good)

One other thing I've noticed with the new HDD is that the video files play now when I'm in the video section of the XMB. I swear they didn't play with the old HDD. Anyone else notice this?!

There is a copy all, you use the Back Up feature and it copies absolutely everything over. icon_wink.gif

Oh my...I am...an IDIOT.

And the video files playing in the XMB. Did that always happen? Or does it happen for you now after the HDD change?

Yup, video files stored on the PS3 always had animated thumbnails. (Apart from the videos downloaded from the PS Store for some reason)

Hmmm...where do you get your videos from then?

All of my videos are downloaded from the PS Store. But these videos were D/L'ed from the store and transferred across to the new HDD. Then they worked...so that's quite strange.

if you download off the store you can change the thumbnail then it will play a small clip of it. but the ones from outside automatically have them, so i would say transferring them to a new hdd made it like a video from an outside source.

Play the selected video, choose the spot you want the thumbnail to begin from, pause the video, press triangle, then select the third last icon in the top row marked "Change Icon".

Then it will ask if you want to continue and make the 15 second animated thumbnail from where you are in the video.

^ I did that for Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The bit with the gratuitous naked male genitalia. Hilarious icon.

I'm so happy we live in a world where you don't even have to load the whole movie to see the grossest 15 second scene.

I'd love to put DVDs on my PS3. How do you do it? Or is that a new thread entirely?

^ I'm pretty sure that if you use the Backup Utility in the System Menu, it will backup everything (including multiple users).

Just try it, you will still have all your data on the original drive if it doesn't work (but I'm 99.9% sure it will).

Yep, when you do a back up, it does everything for all the accounts. I've got a few different ones and didn't have any issues.

I was stupid enough not to use the backup feature, and my accounts were still there with the new HDD installed. Just my messages were not copied over.

Basically, your account info isn't stored on the Hard Drive but in your PS3 so when you change the hard drive, your accounts will still be as you left them but anything you downloaded, stored or saved will not be unless you back up but you can always redownload any purchases and demos.
