Today I upgraded my 80GB HDD to a nice 640GB.

Wasn't too hard, had to have the latest firmware update on a USB but that was no biggie.

Backing up and restoring took 2 hours a piece.

Haha. That's right Space Core, that's right.

OK so too tired to try anymore tonight.

Swapped my old 40gb HDD for a new 500gb HDD. Blue screw came out with pliers.

Tried to turn the PS3 back on and get the YLOD. icon_sad.gif

Looked at the external HDD I thought had copied the data onto but it has the PS3 folder and then is empty.

What do I do now? I know I am a bit of a derp.

Should I put the latest firmware onto the external drive in the update folder and connect it to the PS3?

I wanna upgrade mine (60GB) to 500GB.

My question is how do you transfer the PSN games and game saves from old HDD to new one? External HDD? Would USB stick work?

Not sure about PSN games but some game saves are locked if you will try to USB stick it (has to be FAT format). Is having a full backup of your current 60GB to a FAT32 portable HDD an option?

Yeah, it doesn't accept NTFS (Windows File System format).

Is redownloading PSN purchased item a feasible option if you don't have a spare large external drive?

Is the any guides/reviews that show which brands/models of HDD would run the best on a ps3, like hdds that run cooler than others, vibrate less etc..

I remember reading that the hitachi 7k500 500gb 7200rpm 16mb cache ran well as it ran cooler than its competitors at the time, but i can't find the article anywhere anymore (unless i imagined the whole thing)

Would installing a fast 7200rpm drive improve loading for games that require installation?

For most stuff the difference is negligible, but KZ2 seems a lot faster

For everyone else... WD have two 1TB 2.5" drives

WD10JPVT 5400rpm
WD10TPVT 5200rpm

First is 9.5 mm high, second is 12.5 mm high. I'm guessing it's the latter that will not fit in a PS3.

https://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Data-Storage/Internal-Hard-Drives/25-Internal-Hard-Drives/WD10JPVT

once installed i had 828gbs now that iv restored the back up i now have about 540gbs the back up contained 230gbs and im guessing the 40gbs of play tv recordings made the process slow as it took more then 24 hours druing which time my PS3 got very hot suffice to say install times seem fine but dl times are a bit slower icon_confused.gif read a few comments on the front page of this thread i think , i don't need a jumper or something do i ? feels some what slower then the old 7200 drive i used to have ...

Download times will not be affected by the new HDD, disc write speed is much faster than download speed by a considerable margin.

Got a new laptop for work the other week which had a 750GB drive in it, replaced it with an SSD today through work as well. My boss said he doesn't care what I do with the other drive... Straight into the PS3 it'll go. icon_smile.gif
