Mine was working with 2.40 but I updated *just in case*....knowing my luck if I didn't it would brick at some point anyway.

I clicked it to download, walked out of the room and it was done in a couple of minutes, rather than the usual 30 mins. Did Sony listen and actually just patch the update rather than doing their usual 100+meg download?
Im in the same boat, my PS3 wasnt having problems, but best to have the latest firmware.
Am really enjoying the new functionality, makes contacting friends so much easier..
Now if I could just get some trophies!

Just downloaded 2.41 and am happy to report that my PS3 is no more of a big black brick than it ever was. Was going to try and get some Super Stardust HD tropies, but found out that the update required to play it was 250meg! I mean, thats no update, thats just re-downloading the damn game. _________________

Sounds good - I have 2.40 installed already - had no problems so far -
Will download 2.41 just in case ...
Anyone hear about any more backwards compatibility updates - all my Singstar works fine - even Singstar Bollywood which I imported from the UK - and also God Of War 2 which isnt even on the Sony Backwards compatibility website - why cant sony release a complete list of BC titles...

If you have a BC compatible PS3 it will work with every PS2 game (for that region) but with varying levels of emulation problems.
I downloaded it no problems and had a quick flick through. Although there is nothing for me to play on the PS3 right now so I turned it off again. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Unless they have changed something lately that is wrong. There is a list on the sony website which tells you which games are compatible. They give you the numbers on the spine to check also. I googled it quickly and got a list of games that are currently not compatible with the ps3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PS3_backwards_incompatible_PS2_and_Playstation_games
And here is the offical list from Sony

Err, that doesn't sound too promising...
A lot of people who had their PS3's crap out on them reported the similar thing happening. I'm not saying the firmware has once again screwed up, but if the past update is anything to go by, I'd say the risk is there.
I guess you'll know for sure after a couple of reboots
The one surefire way of a successful update is to copy the firmware onto a USB/SD card and update it via the 'hardware' option. That way you don't have any network connection issues to worry about. _________________

I've noticed the same thing on every update, so don't stress. I assumed Sony doesn't know how to count or something. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Actually he is correct, the PS3 will attempt to load up any previous game from the correct region, the only time it wont run is if there is an emultion problem. Unlike the xbox 360 (had to take the cheap shot ) it doesn't need to be on the BC list, in fact the list is horrendously outdated as many of the games work alot better that the list says they might and some of my games that aren't on the list at all work perfect .
A better, more up to date list can be found here: http://www.ps3comp.com

Firmware 2.40 was working fine for me, but I'll install this update anyway. I don't watch the progress bar, takes too long. Sony should allow you to watch a movie or something while the update is downloading. _________________

Haha, yeah, the same thing has happened to me as well, so don't panic Gizmo, it's perfectly normal.
suction: Pretty much, except that the icon for Platinum Trophies has changed, and there's a new tab which shows your last played game. _________________

i'm guessing 2.41 is just 2.40 with out the side effects. _________________ Dragonforce's new album Ultra Beatdown out August 27th.

My ps3 was fine. I Think most ppls were- it was a minor fault with SOME ps3s... everyoneis making it out to be a huge deal when it wasnt to 99.9% of ps3s

i had no problems with 2.40 i downloaded 2.41 today and the only thing different is the image for the platinum trophy it looks better then the crown. One thing that annoys me is that the icon for all the new stuff with the latest firmware is a question mark. _________________ Dragonforce's new album Ultra Beatdown out August 27th.

With the updates, they ALWAYS go from like 60% to 100%, so don't worry, it's normal.

Hate to sound ignorant but does this mean that some PS2 titles will be backwards compatible with the 40 gig PS3s, or am I missing something...
Do you have to download anything like with the 360 if that is so?
