This is the one thing that has got me set on a PS3. Shame about the lack of backwards compatibility in the slim PS3's
Am I correct in thinking that this would be a set-top box replacement? Is it easy to get to through the menus for older people?

| Euro PS Blog wrote: | Major PlayTV Update Due Towards The End of 2010
Hi, Just wanted to let you know that the guys at Cambridge studios are working really hard to develop some great new features for PlayTV. The next update for PlayTV is due later this year but testing of some of the new features has already begun.
I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the surprise but a little hint to one of the new features is that PlayTV will have links to the worlds most popular social network site, Facebook. Other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features will also be included in the update.
As soon as these exciting new features are ready for you I’ll give you all the details here on the blog.
Hope you are enjoying your PlayTV on your PS3. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add them and I’ll be back on here on Monday to answer as many as I can.
I look forward to getting this update to you later in the year. |
An announcement for an announcement. _________________

I can just picture the facebook functionality now... My status would be automatically updated to: "boredandlazy is now recording Debbie Does Dallas!".
Facebook is a virus that'll take over the world, I'm so sick of it sticking it's nose into everything... _________________

| Euro PS Blog wrote: | PlayTV Is Set To Get Even Better
Hi guys, you may have heard in Andy House’s speech at gamescom that PlayTV is set for some pretty interesting extra features before the end of this year, so just wanted to run you through the new features with you on here. Although I’m in Cologne giving demos of PlayTV, I’ll do my best to answer any questions you have.
Just in case you haven’t heard much about this great gadget for your PS3, here’s a really quick look at the basics.
- PlayTV is the little black box that lets you watch, pause and record free-to-air digital TV on your PS3.
- Pause, rewind and record Live TV, watch one channel while you record another and even record programmes while playing games.
- PlayTV features an easy to use programme guide to help you easily plan your viewing.
- If you have a PSP, VAIO laptop or Sony Ericsson AINO phone, you can take all these great features with you, wherever you go. Remote Play enables you to watch live television in superb quality, access previously recorded programmes and organise your media library anywhere in the world. All you need is a wireless Internet connection.
- PlayTV also lets you upscale your Standard Definition TV programmes.
Now, check out the new features that will be coming to all current and new PlayTV owners, later in the year.
- Play TV is going to become an interactive experience with the great new ‘Chat TV’ feature. Text chat with friends and other PlayStation Network users while watching live TV, and without interrupting your viewing. This feature is a great way of interacting with friends while you watch TV, and especially great during the football as you can banter with your mates without taking your eyes off the action.
- The next new feature for PlayTV is a new premium programme guide (from ‘tvtv’) that lets you Plan your TV viewing 7 days in advance. You can also find tonnes of information on programmes and movies, as well as discovering new things to watch by searching TV listings by genre, actors, directors, producers and more. (standard PlayTV programme guide in Australia)
- You will also be glad to hear that PlayTV will be getting the much awaited feature in the UK, Series Link. Never miss an episode of your favourite series again. (Only available in the UK)
- Following on from the community theme of the new PlayTV features, you will be able to send recommendations for your favourite shows to your Facebook wall and also any of your PSN friends. People will be able to comment on your Facebook recommendations or even set a recording for the show directly from the PSN recommendation.
- The final new feature coming to PlayTV is designed to give you some added inspiration with ‘Community Favourites’. This feature lets you see what your friends and the PSN Community are watching and enjoying. So if you’re ever stuck for something to watch then just check out what everyone else is watching. (Not available in Australia)

Well the big announcement of updates for PlayTV came today, along with the likelyhood that SONY are going to charge for these upates as well. I still use PlayTV to be an accidental pirate and such, but it's probably once a week at the most when the NFL is on.
I can't see myself adding these extra features if it comes at a price. _________________

I bought this on impulse when I was in EB the other day (used - $120). I was a little skeptical as to whether or not it would actually work with my indoor antenna, which provides rubbish normal television reception (wouldn't even pick up sbs or abc), but it turns out that it works great.
I'm new to digital free-to-air coverage, so I'm mostly just stoked a free channel that has Magnum P.I., Knight Rider and The A-Team exists. <3
Plus of course, all the foreign porn on sbs that I can now watch. Or, if I hear a car pull up, I can quickly set it to record and switch it over to make out like I'm watching the late news.

So is it a solid service Furianshi? I was interested but I thought the whole thing bombed, like I thought PlayTV needed constant support behind the scenes and sony were dwindling on that part. But it looks like I was wrong and its just a decent peripheral to view tv?
I really need something that can record tv

^ I don't really have anything to compare it to, but it certainly does the trick for me. There's the odd hitch here and there where the stream must be too much for my rabbit ears or something, but I found if I pause it and let it get ahead a bit and then unpause it, it's nice and smooth.
Recording shows is a little hit and miss as far as scheduling, like the show might be due to finish at 10am, but it might go over and finish at 10:06am. So if you set it to record until 10am, you miss those 6 minutes. You can though, schedule the recording to begin up to 10mins early and finish up to 10mins after the show was scheduled to finish.
Coming from standard TV (with crappy reception) to this though, I'm totally loving it. It's a huge step up. There's like 15-20 extra channels, all beautiful reception and clarity with pause and record as icing on the cake.
For me it's a bit of a lifestyle change as well. No more waiting for the ads, going to the toilet and rushing to bust one out before the ads finish. Obviously our childrens children won't have any appreciation for this simple convenience and we'll all have something to whinge at them about how the old days were harder...

I just find channel 7's lack of sticking to the correct airing times frustrating. All the others are pretty good however. _________________ Playing: Fallout: New Vegas

do any of the problems mentioned on whirl pool still exist ?
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ps3_playtv_imports
im just
My area isn't listed, how can I tell if an imported PlayTV will work?
The frequencies used to broadcast digital television signals in Australia can be found here. Download the excel spreadsheet and look for your transmitter or local area. If your channels are broadcast on the VHF band (46 Mhz – 226 MHz, Ch# 0-12) then you should be OK. If the frequency of the channels in your area are in the UHF band (527 Mhz – 815 Mhz, Ch# 28-69) a UK sourced PlayTV will not work for you with the current version (1.10) of software.
Or look at boric's Google Map: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://sites.google.com/site/playtvproject/Home/PlayTV.kml . Find your location and then look at the coloured flags. Each of these flags represents a transmitter. A red flag means that transmitter broadcasts UHF signals and PlayTV won't work. Yellow means it broadcasts some VHF and some UHF so PlayTV will pick up some channels. Green means it broadcasts VHF only so PlayTV will pick up all channels. Note that the closest transmitter to your location is necessarily the transmitter you use, check the direction your aerial points.
dos stuff like that still apply ? _________________

It seems like you are paying to be able to connect to facebook. and every other feature is for the UK only.
There is a free software update too. but you have to get that through playTV menu and not the playstation store. There have been a few improvements, like the ability to change the channels by pressing the numbers on the remote.
