I'm not sure if this is as hotly debated here as it is in my circle of friends... but...view
3rd person or 1st person...
personally I'm a first person kinda guy.
I will bring this into perspective - I don't have a car or bike license and I'm, uhh, too old not to. My fiance has hers, but prefers 3rd person. It just doesn't make sense. Most of my friends who drive also prefer 3rd person.
Is there any reason behind this kind of behaviour?

I like to see the whole car and what's around me, so I go 3rd person, I might change every now and then, but I find it a lot easier to aim the corners etc... out of car. _________________

I cant stand 3rd person, First person comes more naturally to me. I find stearing and control alot easier in first person. _________________

I can't stand first person I love being able to see everything around me clearer, makes it feel like I am above it a bit I guess.

I prefer first person, but play with 3rd person since you can't see enough in first. Any driver would know how little the view is in game compare with irl. _________________

@dc0079: The view may be more expanded, but you get a more accurate view of whats coming ahead of you in 1st person and that is where ur heading (unless ur Cro, in that case ur trying to ram me off the road). And most games today feature a looking mode by moving the 2nd analogue stick.
oh and Cro: Talk to the HAND
We both know the only reason you won was because u drove a red car. Its a scientific fact that Red cars are faster then yellow. _________________

Games like PGR3 where it has an in-car view I'll use that, otherwise I just go for 3rd person. _________________

All racing car games I play in first person, if in car is available I use that, then it would be hood view and then bumper. I hate playing in 3rd person! _________________

Incar view takes up to much space on a 23" screen. So i use bonnet view with a racing wheel, controller i use 3rd person. Way more control in first person if u got a racing wheel.

Initially I liked racing in 3rd person view, however recently when playing F-Zero GX I found that I could do attacks more easily in first person and stuck with that only to to find my racing skills have improved by staying in first person (was finally able to unlock diamond cup and finish story mode).

I use both on Forza2 and Dirt.
3rd person is great as I like to see the car, the damage etc
1st person if I am losing and really need to concentrate and catch up.

2nd person would be those TV camera views from the side of the track
I use 3rd person because I only play arcadey racers so I want to see all the crashing! Also I find that you can see further in 3rd person so it's easier to sight-read the course. _________________ Playing: 30sec Hero, Scribblenauts, Dungeon Crawl

second person perspective is when the reader is the character, so when it says things like "You open the Door and walk through". "choose your own adventure" style books are a the easiest example.
by their very nature, games are rarely second-person anymore, although text-heavy games might use it still in describing the narrative (Role Playing Games in particular - "Will you open the door?" style).
but i can't work out a way of making the camera operate in a second person nature. if the camera was through the eyes of another character, watching you do your thing, then that's close.
EDIT: ooh, security camera view!
games like Resident Evil 1-3 are almost 2nd person, as they seem to be through the eyes of a security cam most of the time, rather than tracking with the character.
@ Evil
---
as for the topic, i prefer to use third-person view, i like to be able to see my car, but i find first-person view easier to control, so i use that if it's a tough race.
i don't really like in-car view 99% of the time, there are very few games that do it well, imo. _________________

I go with bonnet cam or 1st person 99% of the time. I did use the 3rd person back in the day but after playing the original Burnout in 1st person I've stuck with it.
For some reason it just doesn't feel right watching the car turn from a 3rd person perspective, so while it allows you to see more i just can use it. Which sucks for games like Burnout Revenge where you need the 3rd person view to be able to do takedowns effectively. _________________

I prefer 3rd person, behind the car personally. I generally cant get used to inside the car or bonnet cam. _________________ RIP Buddha 19/10/1952 - 03/01/2004

In the vast majority of cases I'll play 3rd person, but I find that when I'm playing Datona in the arcade I prefer the 'on the bonnet' 1st person view. This suggests that if I had a wheel at home I'd prefer 1st person, like the people above suggest. _________________

I prefer to play in first person but it all really depends on how the cars in each game handle. Like in Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo I always play in first person but in PGR the cars handle differently and for some reason I perform better whilst playing in third person. _________________

If the game has an in-car camera view (read: behind the wheel literally) then I will use that. Otherwise it's the bumper camera for me as it's the closest thing (in a game I mean) to being behind the wheel and yeah, it's just my second best option.
I do however, use the 3rd person camera view in the (recent) Burnout games as it's just easier to pull off Takedowns with it. _________________

Personally I can't stand first person. Can't see where I am, when corners are coming up. However with third person I can always see and I can do better than in first. Mind you I still stuck at racing games either way. _________________ Don't you LOL me. Don't you Dare LOL me.

I prefer 3rd person view in most racing games, especially when those racing games involve a lot of powersliding as I like to see where my rear-end is in relation to the wall. The only time I ever used bumper-cam was in Gran Turismo 3 since the 3rd-person view was way too close the car and it obstructed my view of the road.
On a side note I hated how the 3rd person camera in NFS Carbon would tilt sideways when you drove near the edge of a canyon. It made judging corners much harder than it should, especially since I have the Wii version.

I am totally hopeless with 1st person. However, the main reason i like 3rd person is because i love to see what i am driving. I just can't imagine driving a posche in GT and not seeing how realistic they have made it look. Developers in games like Gt spend sooo much of their time creating the cars to be lifelike, 1st person feels like i'm neglecting their effort. _________________
