I'm running a 1080i TV, and the upscaling produces a visibly better picture than before. It isn't a huge difference, granted, but the jaggies are a little less extreme which is nice. _________________

Well I agree that is a nice feature (not sure how you would go with movie streaming) media center is seriously the bomb. You can record TV and stream content of your 360 using a beautiful well crafted interface. On top of that, you can stream 'unsupported' media types from your 360 using a media center plugin in. Ie DivX, encoded MP4s etc.
While the PS3 update is getting better, I'm not happy with it. I do like the music streaming, but seriously (this is what I hate about Sony) why is the music player a full blown application? Why can't it play happily in the background and play a game of tekken with music playing ? And why is the music play so rigid. you can't add songs to a playing selection or anything like that. The worst part is if you exit from the music player it takes like 5-10 seconds to quit.
I can't see the PS3 ever replacing my 360's place as my media hub any time soon, for music and movies into my longue room. _________________ Shin J Leon.

OH it has new HDMI options. I had a look at the documentation but that as yet to reflect the newer updates. _________________ Shin J Leon.

This is a pretty cool update, but I reckon the PS2 upscaling could use a little polishing. I dunno if it's just my TV (pretty sure its not tho, my TV rules), but when I play a game in Normal upscaling mode, widescreen images don't fill the screen and are slightly squashed horizontally (making ppl look a little too skinny), and when in full screen mode they're a little squashed vertically and the edges of the screen get cut out. Note that I have played around with the aspect ratios on my TV to try and correct this but it still comes out squashed. Also, my TV's max resolution is 1080i, but that shouldn't make any difference, should it?
Still, some games look amazing, and the best thing is MGS2 (standard edition) is finally working!!!
So, so stoked. And what's more, of all the games I tested it looks the best running in 1080i (better even that MGS3, which is weird but oh well... oh and Subsistence Disc 1 works again too! Double stoked.)... I had lotsa fun taking out the GRU soldiers on the tanker and dumping them in the sea
Oh, and GoWII looks insane, especially the hi-res cutscenes (now even higher-res cutscenes). Still, I noticed some heavy pixellation when flying over the temple of Lakhesis, but everything else looks mad.
And i gotta say i was a little disappointed in the DVD upscaling... but I think I was expecting too much. Blu-Ray has forever spoiled me (just bought The Departed and man. HD owns). I tested FF Advent Children and The Matrix and they both looked pretty much the same. Still, someone up there said anime looked better, and I watch a tonne of anime so I'll see what it looks like next time I watch another episode of Ghost in the Shell.
So yeah. Another good update, and one that'll probably be improved upon as time goes on.

Blu-Ray now plays back at 720p as well.
The upscaling works a lot better on some games than others, apprently Shadow of the Colossus looks amazing at 720p.
The addition of Full RGB colour in the HDMI options makes everything look much more crisp.

Those three points just made me feel a little light headed.
In a good way of course. _________________

That's good news, I didn't know that. I will be trying the 720p mode tonight for BD movies. Good find fatpizza. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Just a quick mention, and also need someone to have it clarified - apparently you need HDMI to actually upscale PS2/PS1/DVD to HD, component can't do it.
For me, I'm running HDMI and everything is upscaling and looking swish. Anyone with component unable to upscale? _________________

I'm running component temporarily, and it's upscaling for me. I'm sure it'll look better when I go back to HDMI, but it's running in 1080i res rather than 576*whatever (bad memory for numbers). _________________

Just to be clear, DVDs will NOT upscale unless you have a 1080p set and HDMI connection. PS2 games will upscale to whateva max resolution your PS3 is set to.
Exactly the same as the 360 all round. _________________ Shin J Leon.

Good point, I haven't had a chance to test this. Futher thinking suggest no. I will report.
However DVD upscaling seems to be only done on a 1080p basis, for what reason I do not know. _________________ Shin J Leon.

I'm quite pleased with the update, bc list seems to have grown quite well with it. At least at my house it has, the number of incompatible games I have went from 7 down to 1 (still waiting on Gitaroo Man).

Well I updated and now I can't sign in to the PS Network. I hear a lot of people in the US had the same problem when they got 1.80 update.

Might be just you, because I have 1080i Max TV, and my dvds are upscaling. You have to change the settings in the BD/DVD Settings though. And I'm running through HDMI. _________________

Yeah, my DVDs are upscaling on my 1080i TV too. Watched one of the new re-released & remastered 007 movies last night and it looked great (definately better than the last one I watched on it before the update).
Also, that not being able to connect after the update thing... Are you on a Telstra ISP? Coz I've got the same thing. I rang Playstation support and they said it's Telstra's fault, and should be fixed in a couple of days since it's the weekend. Sucks but oh well.

Excellent, thank you. It indeed does upscale. Well done Sony, that is awesome. BD movies now can be displayed at 720p which is brillant. This is really a great update from Sony. Why do they keep things like this quiet though? _________________ Shin J Leon.
