I thought this topic could be a mature discussion on if the rumble is coming back to the PS3 how Sony could do it in a way not to upset consumers.

For instance, if you've just forked over $1000 for a console do you think it's fair you may have to buy another controller (or 2 for rumble)? Do you think that games previously released can support rumble via a patch.. and what titles would be good to debut with rumble?

I don't mind paying for a extra controller because i will be buying 1 more. I hope games that have been released could support rumble but i doubt it. I think the games that would be awsome to debut rumble would be warhawk, heavenly sword, lair to name a few icon_wink.gif

I don't know if games already released will support. Didn't Logitech try to put rumble in the steering wheel, but the games didn't have rumble encoded in their software so it didn't work?

I doubt that we'll see anything on the 'SIXAXIS-SHOCK' front for a while yet. Sony have only just made good with Immersion again, and they're not going to rush out a controller - they'll spend enough time and money to make it good. Let's face it, they'll have to match or surpass the quality of the DUALSHOCK (a controller widely regarded as one of the best in gaming history) with their new one and that won't be a simple task.

Going on that assumption, I'd reckon that by the time it's out on shelves all the first (possibly second too?) wave of software will have long been abandoned by their Publishers. If there was one launch title that should have rumble then Motorstorm would be it, IMO. Hopefully we'll have a nice new rumble-friendly controller by the time it gets a sequel.

I think that Motorstorm would have been a great game to feature rumble, same goes for Full Auto and Resistance. In future, it would be good in Heavenly Sword, FFXIII and White Knight Story (that game is made for rumble). icon_smile.gif

I doubt we'll see rumble though, Sony usually remain very stubborn once they've made up their minds. Even if they do implement it (which would be great), it's too late for the 1st wave of games. icon_sad.gif

I believe a rumble enhanced version of the SIXAXIS is imminent. I also believe that it is scheduled for release at least 12 months away to make the new controller appear as a legitimate enhancement that was in no way able to make the launch of the PS3. That should lessen the blow to early adopters.

The PS1 had both the digital and then analog DualShock so I can see this happening for the PS3.

Agreed. I had the digital PS1 controller and bought the analog (Dual Shock) with the release of Gran Turismo. However some PS1 games were subsequently re-released to include Dual Shock support - this is unacceptable this time around, free downloadable patches would be far more desirable.

Attn Luke: Whatever happened to Qs for SONY rep?

I personally feel that the Rumble feature is fun for about as long as the rumble lasts. Really, I don't care about the rumble... it doesn't make me feel like I'm there, feeling it for real or anything.

What would be really neat is some sort of patches you can physically add to your body, so when you're playing something like Fight Night, you feel a jolt to the position of your body where you were punched. That would rule. Nothing painful, of course... but enough to feel it.

Maybe that's something more suited to the Wii though with those remotes.

Anywho, I wouldn't fork out heaps of money just for a rumble feature. I'm perfectly happy with a standard, sony controller.

I agree, i would prefer rumble, but its not to big a deal. It is at its best when its not overused, like for a heart beat in Metal Gear. I do think Sony will release a new controller featuring rumble by the end of this year.

Sony are big babies, and should annouce at this convention that every PS3 bought is entitled to get an additional controller with rumble enabled.

Not going to happen, but would be nice.

Ideally they'd just get the release of a PS3 rumble enabled Sixaxis out of the way, so that it didn't have to be a concern later down the track and developers who want to utilise it can start doing so now rather than later.

However that probably won't happen so I think a good move from Sony would be a similar one to what they did on the original Playstation (and one that has already been mentioned in this thread), introducing the Dualshock after having the original analogue controller for so long. Doing this with a rumble enabled Sixaxis would be satisfactory for me as a consumer because in a way, they would be giving the Sixaxis time to establish itself as a motion-sensing controller and then having rumble later once everyone is used to the motion-sensing stuff.

Just as long as it is ready in time for Gran Turismo 5...

I would have thought a revhead like yourself would rather go all the way a shell out for a wheel, instead of opting for a traditional controller? Playing GT4 with the Driving Force Pro is a fantastic experience, especially on the rally stages.

You would have thought correctly too, if money permitted back when Gran Turismo 4 released. icon_sad.gif
I always did intend to get the Driving Force Pro though, but yeah it didn't happen. 'Course, this generation is different to last and I fully expect that I will be owning both the Microsoft wheel and the new Logitech one this time around, so yeah here's hoping eh?

That said, I don't mind playing with controllers at all. From what I have gathered from friends and whatever, I seem to be able to control my acceleration levels a lot easier than they can. Which is surprising given the limitations of the analogue buttons versus a wheel and accelerator combo.
