wtf are people talking about "Monsters"?

Rhinoceros, Elephants and a berserker.

the Rhino and Elephants could quite easily be considered "monsters" to someone who's never seen them before, and historically, these animals were used as war machines.

likewise gunpowder considered "Magic".

Monsters: executioner with crab arms, massive dude with sword, little creature with a wizard hat, Oracle lickers. There were heaps of monsters.

The only 'monsters' in the movie were the executioner and the the musical donkey-headed thing. The rest were just slight exaggerations of what could easily have existed (eg beserker was just a really big person, oracle lickers were just seedy lepers).

Executioner was a fat amputee with bladed replacements.
massive dude was a berserker
little creature... ok, i don't remember this one...
oracle lickers were inbred, plagued people.

aside from the little creature (possibly, like i said, i don't remember these guys at all), the rest aren't "monsters" as such, they've all got their basis in reality. they're obviously exaggerated (like the size of the elephants and the rhino - or the whole "1 million Persians" thing), but i didn't see them as monsters.

i guess it's more a matter of perception i suppose.

I think Mitch was referring to the traitorous 'spartan' as the little creature.

Just got back now from the movie and I really loved it. The elephants were mad and the battlescenes really well done (I guess they had to be when the whole movie is based around it). Especially good when you get into the cinema on mates rates ($4) icon_smile.gif

Spoilers and crap below:

In the scene where the traitor speaks to Xerxes(sp?) there is a goat headed... man? playing music. It's not a major breaking point of the film, not even close to being one, although now that I think about it, the Persians are all about intimidating and instiling fear in their aggressors so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch to mutilate a man to become a grotesque walking executioner, or create a mask so vividly real that those who witness it would believe that only magic were capable of such an abomination. My reasoning for this just came from the whole "immortals" fiasco. So there you go, this isn't an issue any more, I've explained it (at least for myself, feel free to draw your own conclusions). The "magic" users also attribute to this ideal of Xerxes using tricks to scare his opponents because the Spartans believe those exploding pots are magic, we know it's just gunpowder.

Saw it at the IMAX on Friday night with a bunch of my mates.

It was superb!! EVERYONE should see it at the IMAX - totally blows you away how visually stunning it is.

Thumbs up from me.
Plus Gerry Butler is in it, and will I always support Scottish actors!

I might as well see it again at Imax. Christ I've lived in Melbourne for a good 3 and a half years and I still haven't gone there (then again there is a lot Melbourne has to offer that I have yet to partake in).

hehe you desensitized mofos. icon_razz.gif

Legs cut off flying through the air? yeah not violent at all.
You have to remember that the people that classify these things think stuff like that is violent, but not to peepz like us who see that sort of thing alot, especially after playing soldier of fortune 2. icon_razz.gif

Man I loved some parts of that movie but some parts just seemed too stretched out and way too artsy.

Saw it yesterday and loved it. Loved how it was unashamedly just a two hour action sequence with only tiny bits of plot. Loved how they unashamedly went 'eh, a normal battle would be boring, lets have ninja dudes and elephants and little wizards with bombs'. Loved how the went mental with the slow motion death sequences. Basically I loved all of it.

lol. iv heard people bitching about the realism/historical accuracy.. and i lol at them... its a movie, BASED off a comic, which was INSPIRED off a movie, which was BASED off the actual events... and of course, frank miller super-stylises all his comics aswell... so you cant really complain about the accuracy, as they never said it was going to be accurate at all...

It did seem to have a somewhat unintentional humor in some of the dialogue. I thought it was a decent movie though there was too much slow-motion for my liking. If all the slow-motion stuff was going at normal pace, the movie would have been almost half as long as it is.
