I just watched it. Fantastic film!

I need to watch it again ( icon_cool.gif I can) to see the first scene, I can't really remember.

When I first read the Sypnosis, I thought the "violence" was actually against the girl....but I was wrong. Captain Vidal reminds me of Jimoen with a comb-over.

There's more violence in Sin City in this, which is a releif.

What's up with the Hand's Eye scene? Too me (The character looked cool) there wasn't alot of point in that scene I thought she would actually get punished not just get chased by him then run off. I understand the eating of the grapes was meant to be like Eve eating the apple but yeah.....

Me no like Pan, never trust a fawn icon_wink.gif

How could she be hungry from the night before to eat the grapes? She probably had breakfast, they should you people getting food. I think it was just the temptation side.....

8/10

The violence didn't really affect, no cringing moments. Must be me.

If it doesn't take out Best Art Direction and Best Makeup there will be murders. While I believe it should get a number of the others, these two I can't imagine anything else getting (if The Queen or something similar gets these awards I will be pissed, period pieces are done so freaking much that any chance of ballsing up the costume is absolutely ludicrous).

efo, if you can't actually back up why you didn't like the film, then shut up and don't post at all.

Anyway, I finally saw it today and really enjoyed it.

One thing though, that hasn't really been addressed/answered in this thread so far: when she's in the room with the hand eyes bloke, it seemed to me like she was intentionally disobeying Pan. I mean first she chooses the complete wrong door, with the fairies protesting the whole time. Then she goes and picks up the grape, with the fairies wildly protesting as she does so, but she brushes them aside and eats it anyway. She explains to Pan that she "forgot" or something similar, but I just didn't buy that. She knew she was doing wrong, she knew she was breaking the rules, but she went ahead and did it anyway. But this was never dealt with and I didn't really understand why she did this.

I think it was an act of defiance due to Mercedes warning that fauns couldn't be trusted. The unlocking of the wrong door was interesting, and I noticed it both times, the fact that the reward is (apparantly) the same either way (Pan makes no mention of the fact that she opened the wrong door) makes the situation far more puzzling.

As for the grapes, I think it was a combination of acting out against the older generation and that she probably didn't think anything of it, she is twelve after all. Oh, and she doesn't say she forgot, she says that she "only took two grapes and didn't think it would matter". I never really took issue with the grapes, I just assumed it was a hungry kid who is acting rebellious (which is confirmed throughout the film).

^ he probably did, given his personality.

i thought the eating bit was kinda fair enough. i think it was down to the fact she hadn't eaten all day, and acted naively and did think it didn't matter, rather than acting rebelliously.

i'm not really too sure about the doors thing, the only thing i can think of is that it was part of the test, testing her instincts or something, though this isn't mentioned, or at least not translated.

Oscar Noms:
well, here's what it's up against in each category.

Best foreign language film of the year
“After the Wedding”
“Days of Glory (Indigènes)”
“The Lives of Others”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”
“Water”

Original screenplay
“Babel”
“Letters from Iwo Jima”
“Little Miss Sunshine”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”
“The Queen”

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original score)
“Babel”
“The Good German”
“Notes on a Scandal”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”
“The Queen”

Achievement in cinematography
“The Black Dahlia”
“Children of Men”
“The Illusionist”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”
“The Prestige”

Achievement in Art Direction
“Dreamgirls”
“The Good Shepherd”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”
“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest”
“The Prestige”

Achievement in makeup
“Apocalypto”
“Click”
“Pan’s Labyrinth”

i think it should win Makeup hands down. Art Direction, POTC might prove some stiff competition, as will The Prestige and Dreamgirls.

the other categories, i've not seen enough of the competition to make judgement.

I don't remember that much make up in Click, though Sandler does go through a bunch of age changes so I figure it's Grandpa Adam that got them the nomination. I don't belive for a minute that they couldn't have found another movie more worthy of the nomination though.

Babel could take out screenplay, but I have a hunch it will be Eastwood's film taking that particular trophy home (Americans are suckers for a good WWII flick).
