HDTVs are worlds apart from CRTs. For those seeking aquisition of an LCD or plasma I think it would be worthwhile to have a topic which can be easily accessed, allowing ongoing discussion regarding this relatively new technology - hence the birth of this topic.
Firstly HDTV gaming lag seems to be a concern for some as indicated by this IGN.com feature: http://gear.ign.com/articles/712/712352p1.html
Question 1: What would be the optimal native resolution for a HDTV to be used with both a PS3 and a PS2?
I those of you with firsthand experience or the technologically savvy will contribute as this topic could prove to be a highly valuable resource.
Hopefully I'm not

SDTV for the Gamecube/PS2/Wii/Xbox, 720p for the PS3/Xbox 360, 1080i for public TV.

Actually the Wii outputs 480p (thats a deffinant for LOZ:TP and all VC games are upscaled to 480p). This is also known as EDTV (Enhanced definition TV)
I think even some ps2 and xbox games output in higher than 480i resolutions.
Xbox 360 outputs in 720p and 1080i
PS3 outputs 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p
oh, and i have a question.
Does anyone know, if i wanted to view an EDTV resolutions on my PC montor would i need a HD set-top box or could i use a normal SD set-top box?

I just got component cables for my PS2 and the PQ is much improved on all games over CRT and composite.
I was disappointed to discover PAL GT4 has HD modes removed.
I need to pick up RE4 and God of War to check how PS2 handles HD reses - I'll report back on this.
There is no lag - I just have a basic Samsung 32" T51 with no bells and whistles. It's superb - and I am a very fussy gamer. I used to play my snes on an Amiga monitor back in the day to get the best PQ.
I haven't got a 360 and won't be getting one. I will however get the Wii when it's released. I don't anticipate any hassles with my LCD.
Is it possible to get component cables for PS1, N64, SNES, Megadrive, Saturn, Dreamcast.
Actually scratch the last one - I have Dreamcast connect through VGA and it's lovely. _________________

However all modern TVs support EDTV anyway so there's no point in saying it. The Gamecube also outputs 5##i as well. I merely stating the optimum resolution for each console. Cause virtually all PS3 games will only be optimised for 720p.

Never hook up a system by composite to a HDTV, it looks terrible. Invest in good quality component cables.

I don't think you can get one for SNES, N64, Megadrive/Saturn or the PS1 as those systems hardware wasn't designed for use with Component Video signals etc.
Plus it wouldn't be worth it anyway The SNES/Megadrive had a Max Resolution of 320x244 and a Standard TV has a Max Resolution of 576x640
a Playstation 1 and N64 had a Max Resolution of 480x576
These Systems never Supported Component Video and if they Did Pixels would be Very Blocky
As for the Dreamcast I think it might have had a Component Video Cable Released, but i think only Japanese Systems Supported it
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also Just Remember People HD TV's are not only LCD and Plasma Monitors, some CRT Monitors/Televisions can Support HD too
HD refers to Resolutions of 720i and p or above, The Early HD experience consisted of CRT's which could support 576p but now the standard is 720i which is basically the Max Resolution of a DVD Disk _________________ http://www.myspace.com/christopherharrismusicpage

You can hook up a DC via VGA, it looks absolutely gorgeous. And the N64 supported widescreen for some games (I think Pod Racer?) _________________
