You'd better hurry. It was on sale at Kinokuniya a while ago.(if you live in Sydney). The Gakkenflex is a DIY TLR camera that you build yourself, which is included as part of a Japanese camera hobby magazine. All the diagrams are in Japanese, so you'd have to rely on looking at the pictures like me.
The magazine looks like this and cost me $54 if I remember correctly (which is drastically a drastically marked up price compared to the Japanese rrp):
Although its a tad expensive, I would say that the fun I had building it and learning about the internal structure of the camera would outweigh the cost.
| InvinI wrote: | | Looking at all these shots makes me want to grab a prime lens to muck around with, thinking of nabbing the Nikkor 50mm AF f/1.8D. Thoughts anyone? |
I have that lens. Its a good lens (and also listed as number one on Ken Rockwell's "10 best lens" page ) and you really can't go wrong with the quality of this lens. While the quality is good, I would think it is a bit too zoom-y at 50mm on a cropped body. This is probably why I don't use it very often, though it is quite small and convenient to slip into my camera bag. Also, it can't autofocus on the D5000, though you can get an indication fo the focus from the "Rangefinder" function.
So I would think it is worth paying more for the AF-S DX Nikkor f/1.8G. _________________

Haha, its not that mindblowing. Its basically a pre-made body that you snap on, screw together and insert springs here and there.
Film cameras are just boxes that let light onto a piece of film.
But I had plenty of fun building it.
Edit: And the Gakkenflex is fixed at f/11 with a shutter speed of 1/125 secs. You can change it to f/5.6 by removing the aperture ring. Its not a professional camera, more of an amateur/hobbyist camera. If you'd like to see what pics this baby can churn out, check out the Flickr page here.
| Puddingfork wrote: | | Would any regular newsagent sell that? I want one (Live in QLD) |
I wouldn't think so. Its an imported Japanese magazine ordered in limited quantities in Australia. I think you can get it on ebay, though again, it is a tad expensive. _________________

Depends on what you want, if you're just after the speed and low ap, I wouldn't bother. However if you want to shoot how you see it and want as close to 1:1 spend the extra.
I'm pretty cheap, I'd prefer the 50mm. I mean it's a fixed length, so you have to walk around to frame your shot anyway and I'd rather take 4 steps back than fork out twice the price.
How often are you going to be in a situation when you can't step back just a bit? Is this worth the cost? _________________ Worst. Signature. Ever.

Just put the new lens on the camera and had a little play around. As a DSLR beginner, it's a nice challenge to use the manual aperture and focus rings.
Love the sharpness and narrow depth of field with this lens though.

The lens? No it's a Pentax-M 50mm 1.7. As I said when I got the camera a few months ago, one of the plusses is being able to use any K-mount lens from Pentax's history. This particular one is still highly regarded and went out of production in the early 1980s. Bargain IQ for $55

RRP in Japan is 2500 Yen, which is about $30 au. Unfortunately, the price doubles if you buy it here in Australia. _________________

+'d for the Miniature Schnauzer. My girlfriend and I have one and he's awesome. The fact that you can let them grow goatees and beards and style them if you wanted to is an awesome enough reason to have one as a pet. _________________
