I read an interesting article over at IGN yesterday about the PSP's lack of showing at E3. It also mentioned how this was the PSP's second year of development, but it was looking like nothing really happening for the handheld with a bare minimum amount of decent titles on show. I mean, apart from MGS title and Capcom’s wealth of makeovers, the games are look very average.
I have a theory though. I think Sony is playing down the PSP on purpose at the moment and getting ready to launch a new version with will fall in line with the PS3. I think they will announce a new PSP very soon with an inbuilt storage medium. Plus there are rumours of Sony working on a new mobile graphics chip. This would allow the 'new' PSP to gain 'hours' of battery life and drop the costly UMD format which has been a universal failure. Furthermore I think PSP games will go into digital distribution (using the PS3 as a hub) model, plus with the added advantage of the downloaded and chargeable PS1 games.
I do believe this is very bad for the millions of users who have actually purchased a overpriced PSP and would be a nasty ask to upgrade from a perfectly good unit. I would dearly love some killer apps on the PSP, but right now that machine is an overpriced MP3 player for me. Hopefully I’m wrong and a bunch of killer titles are on the way.

yep agree. Being the second year .. their should have been some good quality games on show .. seems like not many developers are wanting to make games for the system. All we see is ports .. no original content . _________________

I bought a PSP as soon as they were releeased. What a mistake. I can;t justify spending so much on a PSP game over a console game, I just can't.
Anyone wanna buy a PSP?

Yea I bought a psp on launch.....it's been such a waste of money I haven't even bothered buying the 2gig memory stick for it (which I can get for $80).
I've got 1 good game....Gta: liberty city stories. There are a couple of others i've thought about buying but just nothing too thrilling ...stuff like the megaman games, daxter and even street fighter but it's not because I wanna play them....it's more for the boxart or the collectability of it all.
If sony ditch this psp and release a new one?! Well they're dead for me then! You can't do this sort of stuff to consumers and expect t o get away with it. I've actually been a loyal sony consumer for years cuz when it comes to portable audio there is no one better...but they stuff like the psp isn't cheap....so in a way I would expect more support for a device like this.
The new psp can eat sh** for all I care....cuz I don't seem to be able to find the time to really play portable games and also they don't seem to hold much enjoyment for me anyways. I'm really looking foward to the DS Lite however cuz the games for that look awesome (e.g mario stuff).
Also digital distribution can f*** off too!!!
I really don't see the problem with the UMD format?! It works fine....it's only the overpriced movies that aren't selling.....and that's a marketing problem! _________________

Sony's Problem is "Technology" and making all of their new systems the most tehnically advanced
UMD Games Cost around $79.95 -$88.00
DS Games $44.00-$69.95
PSP Console: $399.95
DS Console: $176.00
DS Lite: $199.95
That's why Nintendo always own the handheld market, it's because they make it affordable and fun.
Sony's Prices are ripped off, at the moment it looks like sony have killed handheld gaming, i mean you can't use disks for portable gaming, when your on the road you don't want to wait for things to load, i mean the PSP is stupid, Sony are wasting time and money marketing the product _________________ http://www.myspace.com/christopherharrismusicpage

I wouldn't go as far as to say it is stupid. It is a good handheld console, I like it, I just don't want to buy any games for it 'cause I'm too tight and would rather go buy a 360 game.
Also, I havn't had any problems with the UMD format, other than prices.

^ Yea exactly. Gta: Liberty City Stories is a technical marvel....it's loading times are on par with the ps2 loading times (if not less), it has full blown radio stations just like on ps2 (albiet with 1 or 2 less songs....as well as the option to have custom soundtracks) and it looks f***ing fantastic!! It's just the prices of the software....I mean I can get ps2 and xbox games for less....and $10 - $15 more I could be buying an Xbox 360 game. It's that simple....drop the prices for the damn psp software!! Or anything on UMD in general!! _________________

UMDs cost that bit extra because of the protective case. It's kind of an example of the kind of premium you might have to pay for a Blu-Ray disc.

If feel that the expensive price tag may hinder its success, but maybe it will become discounted soon. Soon gamers may not want the technological best handheld, so that is why the DS soon overtake the PSP in sales, as gamers just want fun.

I dunno if it would hinder its success, but it would definately effect it. PSPs are more the mature handheld of the two.

My wife considered getting PSPs for our kids when it was released, but I talked her out of it explaining that we could buy them cheap laptops for only a couple of hundred dollars more than a PSP with a couple of games and a memory stick.
Are the earlier games coming down in price? because I have seen some pretty cheap PSPs for sale second hand lately and am now considering one.

^it's actually kinda scary how true that is!
I haven't seen any psp games that are cheaper than the price they were released for. If someone has....please let me know cuz there are a couple of games I wouldn't mind picking as a collectible. _________________

My PSP has gone to waste. I'm still trying to work out how to downgrade from 2.7, but am too lazy to get a USB cable for it to connect up to the computer, and still only have the stock memory card for it.
