I pretty much do as well. The modern Elder Scrolls games come across to me as a fetch quest, with only glimpses of proper brilliance before I have to walk one house across to talk to someone.

Then again, I haven't really been able to get in to a Western RPG since the glory days of Bioware (Baldur's Gate etc).

The patch that they threw on skyrim is not helping either....before the patch the dragons looked fine to me, now the textures for them don't have enough time to adjust to the distance they are from you, giving a lot of this

Saw plenty of that yesterday and didn't get that at all before.

Yeah, there are a few graphical anomalies after installing the patch, but they should clear up after all the processes clean themselves up. Bethesda recommend saving your game in a completely new file instead of just overwriting (the first time), resetting your console and waiting 73 in game hours.

Anyway, can I put an entire series here? I've never played a single Resident Evil game that I actually liked. Aside from those damnable doors, nothing in the PSX era games was remotely scary, even to my 10-12 year old self. The gameplay then was kinda boring, and I hated the camera (RE1?) at the time.

I'll be honest here, I haven't had a look at RE3 or RE4, because I didn't enjoy either of the first 2 even a little bit. I did play a bit of RE5 though, since I found it for $8 at a Game "we're throwing everything out" super sale. Couldn't even be bothered to play through the first chapter. I hate things like not being able to move and shoot at the same time, and the extremely limited ammo. Also, the zombies were just kind of uninteresting.
Oh, also, they jump on you, basically killing you, but you have a chance to magically recover? Makes sense.

I even tried the demo for Revelations recently, and thought that was pretty crap too. There's just no fun involved in walking around slowly waiting for things to jump out at you. Hell, if a Zombie/ghost/ghoul/mutant jumped out at me, I'd be fucking sprinting out of there, not turning slowly hoping it didn't jump on me.

I thought for a while that it might just be the whole Survival Horror thing is just not my thing, but I played and enjoyed FEAR 2, I thought the atmosphere in that game was fantastic. I also like most stuff with Zombies in it, so really RE should be something I enjoy, but I just can't get into it.

FEAR isn't survival horror. More like action horror. RE-REVCX, Silent Hill, Project Zero are survival horror.

I think they tried to add a sense of realism by making the vulnerability of the character obvious, I mean I can imagine how hard it would be to run whilst shooting in real life.

Tbh if they did a RE game with a fast-FPS style of gameplay that would be pretty awesome. But the zombies will need to be faster, more of them, smarter enemies perhaps, something to compensate for the gain in speed. Hopefully just not like the Flood in Halo where some of them can shoot...blindly...at you.

Oh yeah, I understand WHY Resident Evil games are made as they are, it's just not a style that works for me.

How about common gaming trends that people hate?

The biggest one for me is boss fights. Most people seem to like them, see them as a reward and challenge to overcome at the end of a level. I see them as annoying little immersion breakers that I have to force myself through to enjoy the rest of the game. Often when a game ends with a boss fight, I'll actually just quit right there and watch the ending on YouTube.

There are exceptions. I like it when you don't directly fight the boss but fight a bunch of other normal enemies while indirectly harming the boss somehow, or separately harming him every few minutes (a recent example is that crane boss fight a few levels into The Darkness 2) and I also like it when the idea is a big fight with normal enemies to finally reach the boss and then the boss is still killed in a believable way (such as the ending of Half-Life 2)

Basically any other method I hate though. They are all repetitive and annoying. The absolute worst kind for me is when you're just essentially fighting a normal person who somehow has inhuman amounts of health for no reason. I don't find it very fun to shoot someone hundreds of times before they finally collapse, when their only protection is a T-Shirt.

You have the exact opposite taste in boss fights that I have.

I mean, that section right there is such a cop out. It's deus ex bossfight - rather than use the knowledge you've learnt throughout the game to overcome a massive challenge, the game literally hands you everything you need on the spot to kill the boss and then it's back to business as usual.

Although, speaking of Deus Ex, how about those stupid boss fights in Human Revolution.

My shining example of boss fights being an outdated mechanic is with Dark Souls. An otherwise tense game that overwhelms you with enemies suddenly throws only one at you, the difference being it's much larger than the other enemies and comes with a full screen health meter. Never mind that they're as pattern based as the other enemies, this one's special! Attack, rinse, repeat, yawn.

Half-Life 2 did get it right with that helicopter thing fight before hitting Black Mesa East. It chases you the entire way from City 17 as an invincible foe, and then you get the tools necessary to take it down. It's a culmination of everything you've learnt in the game up to that point, and it's damned satisfying to take it down because of how much of a nuisance it's been.

There's still so much games in general have to learn from Half-Life 2.

Boss fights are usually very anti-climatic. I'm struggling to remember one that won me over. Castlevania Symphony of the Night had great boss fights actually, but that's my fav game of all time!

Man I couldn't dissagree with you more, that boss fight was horrible. I mean the set up was great, but the actual fight was just... boring. You drive around on that stupid hover buggy thing shooting the chopper for 20 minutes, there's no challenge other then having the paitence to kill the fucker.

I dunno, maybe I'm not Denny-tier at FPS games, but I have strong memories of dodging gunfire and dropped mines with no health. And a few reloads. The last time I played it though, I got stuck after the boss battle trying to open the dam. I've done that section like three or four times in total, and I couldn't find the switch to open the thing.

I don't think I'm anywhere near Denny Tier at FPS games either, and it has been a while but I just remember being bored in that boss fight and it dragging on for ever.

I want one of two things in my boss fights
A: Spectacle
I want the game to show me something I've never seen before. Something like Bayonetta or God Of War. (Although the giant boss fights running over the boss is getting old) Just something to wow me. Cause that is always awesome

or
B: I want an interesting challenge. My faviourte boss fights are usually when you go up against someone with similar abilities to you. Like Dark Link in Ocarina of Time,or Nero vs Dante in DMC 4. esspecialy in DMC style combat games where you finally have something with enough health to let you go nuts on em. Something that let's you explore just how crazy you can make combos without them dying after like 5 hits.

How about Mirror Prince in the original Prince of Persia? Best use of a doppelganger in a game, and arguably a boss. Bosses haven't really been all that clever since that one.

I think JRPGs have the most memorable and enjoyable boss battles. Other than that, Painkiller comes to mind. Those bosses were huge and really wowed me at the time.

That crane boss fight in the new Darkness was my most annoying part of the game so far. My major problem with video games and this applies to bosses is when killing a single dude takes ages. Sometimes it works like in Fallout with super mutants but if its just a guy, it is so annoying for bullets to do seemingly nothing to enemies. At least make it visually obvious that the guy has some armor on or something. Biggest standout for this problem is Uncharted and the bosses of Alpha Protocol. So annoying.

The worst act a video game can do is put an unstoppable cutscene after a checkpoint. If I die and have to see the same cutscene over and over all my will to play the game goes away. Biggest offender is Gears of War 2 which does it several times.

I like bosses because they're supposed to challenge your accumulated skills and equipment while also acting as set pieces to cap off whatever level/stage/run you happen to be on. They're a finishing point and final challenge for a 'chapter' of gameplay. I cant really imagine games without them, though not all games necessarily need to do them in a traditional manner.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii's 'final boss' fight is incredible because it's not a fight at all, but an intense, skill demanding platforming section. It makes sense in the context of the game and provides a satisfying, climatic challenge and set piece to end the game.

I love boss battles like that. They require precise party preparation and strategy and it's an awesome feeling when everything works and you've taken them down. Penance and the Dark Aeons from FFX, Freya from SO3 and Lucifer from SMT: Nocturne are my most memorable boss fights. I think it's what makes a JRPG so much fun to play.

I have two pet peeves when it comes to boss fights.

1) Gigantic bosses with big glowing orbs that scream "Shoot me to end the boss battle!" Sure it might be a bit of challenge staying out of range and avoiding attacks but shooting at glowing orbs over and over isn't my idea of fun.

2) QTE's to finish off bosses. If you get them wrong, the boss regains ~1/4-1/2 health back, you have to whittle down their health again and hope you input the QTE correctly next time. It's a cheap way to lengthen a fight and it only serves to piss me off.

Definitely this. I also dislike repetitive actions to access a "weak spot" for massive damage. This usually results in a sort of trial and error until you know how to take the boss down properly.
