The story so far...
- Treyarch (I think it was) were working on some action game starring a female ninja. Open world maybe.
- Activision were supposedly all like "nah man people don't buy games with girls as the protagonist make it a male carn".
- ???
- United Front Games tasked with kinda maybe turning the above prototype or idea into an open world True Crime game with a male Chinese protagonist, set in Hong Kong obviously.
- Game is very, very far in development. Like, tons of stuff done.
- Activision go "lol nope this isn't Call of Duty" and pull the plug on the game, and make it clear they don't give a shit about the IP anymore.
- Square-Enix in their endless pursuit to cover up how incompetent and creatively bankrupt their Japanese studios are by buying Western IPs and studios goes "man we don't have an open world game yet LETS TAKE THIS ONE", buying the entire game content from Activision, meanwhile Activision seem to still want the True Crime IP title or something I dunno. Activision is stupid, that's my point.
- ANYWHO Square-Enix are all "this is gonna be huge" and decide to give the game time to grow a bit. United Front Games are comissioned to get back on board with their own damn title and finish it up.
- Only now its not called True Crime: Hong Kong, it's called Sleeping Dogs.
It's due August on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and I expect it to be pretty great.
Here's some old old gameplay. Excuse the music. No idea what it looks like now.

Nice, looks pretty good. I wouldn't mind something like a hardcore GTA.

Probably deserving of Benza's thread, but in all honesty I'm a sucker for the original True Crime. I owned it on the GameCube at the time, and really, really enjoyed it. I thought the mix of car chases in an open world, shoot-outs, and brawling was done really well. In retrospect it had a lot of problems, but I dug it at the time. I really like it when sandbox games try to do a bit more with their combat systems, kind of like why I enjoyed The Godfather, and why I've distanced myself from Grand Theft Auto.
The E3 videos of this already looked quite promising in my opinion. The brawling system reminded me of the old True Crime as well as The Godfather, in that you could grapple and throw dudes into the environment, and slam them up against stuff for specific attacks. Having a lot of crowded back streets should make for some good Assassin's Creed fights and chases where there's lot of people around. A good sense of civilian density.
I'm pretty excited for this. Square's been on a roll lately with their Western stuff, and seem to be pretty confident in giving games a lot of time to polish up. Human Revolution was delayed countless times, Thief 4 is still in production, and Tomb Raider seems to be getting a lot of attention. This is hopefully the same, and it should be, given they gave the game about a year extra dev time on top of whatever United Front did at Activision.
Hopefully we get some gameplay trailers soon. _________________

Second loving the original True Crime, I really enjoyed the whole RPGish element where you could level up your hand to hand and driving and shit.
Although I still maintain that the whole level with the chinese dragon boss fight and the zombies was fucking way out of place. _________________

I totally forgot about that god awful Chinese dragon and zombie crap in True Crime. Seriously, wtf was up with that. Just as the game gets legs it decides to start chewing its own arm.

haha that's the only bit of the story I actually remember, just going around being all kung fu mother fucker then it's like "Wait was that dude in the kitchen a zombie?!" Then you go through the tunnels and it's like "WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE ZOMBIES EVERYWHERE!" Then it's all like "MOTHER FUCKING DRAGON UP IN YOUR SHIT!"
weirdest fucking twist. And it would have been awesome if it had just rolled with it but then it pulls a "just a dream" ending wich has never not been a pussy arse cop out. _________________

I'll go one further and say that I even really enjoyed New York.
Yeah it was very buggy but honestlty I don't give damn about bugs as long as they aren't game breaking ones.I only care about fun factor.
A good example is Spider-Man 3 on PS2. It is the buggiest game I have ever played but I find it really fun and a lot better than the "superior" PS3 version. _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

There's way to many to list. Besides it's been so long since I played it that I don't remember many
But a big one I could see stopping you from getting the game is pdestrians talking in the wrong voices. Sometimes a guy will have a womans voice and vice versa.Or an African American woman will speak with an Asian American voice
For the PS3 version I remember that the camera is horrible and the graphics I call colourful mud _________________ Welcome to the internet. Where any joke can turn into WWIII.

I played them both too, I don't remember the Spider-man 3 on ps2 well, but on PS3 the graphics were terribad and their eyes were huge.
BUT, it did have the New Goblin which was cool to fly around as, for a bit. _________________

I was wondering what happen to this game, I read about it a few years ago and assumed it was just cancelled.
Ah, gotta love Hong Kong, just got back from there, was there a month ago. I'll definitely be looking forward to this. _________________

Just saw a bit of gameplay, so it's a sandbox game with combat like Arkham Asylum, a bit of parkour like Assassin's Creed and some awesome killcam moments.....

so glad this has been picked up by squeenix. havent watched the newest in game footage or trailers cos my net's capped but from the screenshots jarrods posted, it's looking really good. i remember seeing the e3 gameplay trailer a while ago while it was still known as true crime and being completely sold.
not long after i heard the game had been scrapped and was majorly dissapointed. especially since it was reported to be something like 80 percent complete, it seemed such a waste.
never been a fan of jrpgs, but with how they handled deus ex, and sleeping dogs looking as good as it does, tomb raider, and hitman absolution on the way, square enix is fast on the way to becoming my favourite vidya company.
