It's actually surprisingly good. I've put maybe 1-2 hours into the beta and so far it's simplistic yet fun. I'm playing a sorceress and most skills rely on enemy and character placement. Certain skills will hit an enemy at 10m, etc. There's absolutely no transition between exploring and battling which I like. Everything is done in real time. I haven't come across any stat customization so far which is odd. There's crafting and all that jazz.
I find it's all fairly typical of a modern MMO but everything is done right. I think the defining features are the variety of races and classes, character designs and the graphics. I don't know why anyone would want to play as a male avatar in this game.
The graphics are only in beta and with the full release there will be another 7GB of high resolution textures making the full install close to 30GB. This is a big game. It only supports directx 9 which is a shame and the game optimization is shocking. My FPS spikes from 40 to 80 FPS even when I'm just looking at the same vista.
Edit: I updated my avatar's clothes.

Great port! Plays very well and looks better than the console version. Maxed with 4xAA on my 560Ti

It seems pretty good. Though it uses shitty matchmaking so it takes ages to find a game, and I always get a terrible connection. Getting updated in March, dedicated servers apparently.
And you can get the standard version of Alan Wake for $20.10 from greenmangaming, or a few dollars more for the collectors.

| Quote: | Alan Wake Collector's Edition
Developer Commentary Videos integrated to the game - while you play the game listen to the Remedy team's comments about the locations and design. The commentary contains about one hour of videos, you can activate it from the in-game menu options.
Alan Wake Files
A brave and deeply disturbing account of one man's attempt to confront the visions that haunted him. Clay Steward's gripping journey takes him to a small town in the pacific Northwest where he follows in the tracks of best-selling author Alan Wake and renegade FBI Agent Robert Nightingale. There he travels ever deeper in the woods and ever farther into the heart of darkness to unravel a series of mysterious events that reach hundreds of years into the past and chillingly into the present.
The 130-page illustrated PDF Book will be placed in your Alan Wake folder in the Steam Directory:
...Steam/steamapps/common/Alan Wake/Alan_Wake_Files
Soundtrack
A soundtrack containing 49 minutes of fully mastered tracks in 320kbps MP3 format, composed by Petri Alanko, |
I chose not to buy the collector's edition, though I now kind of regret not spending $3 or so more for it. Ah well.

Hot damn I think I might get the PC version while the collectors edition stuff still comes with it for freebies on Steam. Look at screenshots, remember where in the game it was, want to play it again.

Go for it Goober, I also played the 360 version first and I'm glad I got it for PC too. Good port, good price, and the DLC that I didn't bother with on the consoles. The only thing I've noticed is a weird visual bug where tree branches sort of "flicker." Apparently its a Geforce series 400 & 500 issue. But it feels and looks like it was made for PC. _________________

It really is an amazing port at a great price. The only thing it is missing is being able to aim your flashlight without wasting battery. I never played Alan Wake on the 360 (I just used a 360 controller for a minute to test it), so I have no idea how often you would use that mechanic, but it's still missing from K/B controls.

I don't remember that you could, you just look use it without pressing the aim button which doesn't waste battery, although my memory isnt very good so maybe im wrong. _________________

If you half hold down LT it has the same effect as aiming the flashlight, it just does no damage and wastes no battery. Again, I honestly have no idea how often it would be used, but it's not there on K/M.
