Why do I feel that with the success of this, they're now at $860,000+, that we could maybe see them try something similar for Psychonauts 2. Even if it was only for part of the funding, it could work.

late to the party - but $15 is basically a pre-order. So why wouldn't you? - Jarrods Capcom tale would prevent me "risking" much more though......

Yeah, $15 is all you need to assure yourself a copy of the game. Thankfully, unlike Capcom, Double Fine wont suck money from your bone marrow.

I don't think you really need to worry about risking much with Double Fine, cause they're not evil scum sucking fuck holes.

Also Kickstarter has all kinds of built in safety nets for the people donating.

Would require them to have the licenses for those games. wont happen.

A $1,000,000 game budget in less than 24 hours from only ~26,000 people.

Plus free marketing!

Now hopefully it doesn't bomb or Tim's good name will be kaput. Since this whole thing really is riding off just his and (to a lesser extent) Double Fine's reputation

Whether it bombs or not is irrelevant really. If no one else but the investors buy the game, it's still mission accomplished. Who needs eleventy billion dollars and 500,000 sales minimum when the handful of people that want the game have already paid for it and made it profitable?

Yeah, that's the most interesting thing about this. Rather than set a budget, pay staff, and work on a project that then must be advertised, packaged, and sold, while trying to appeal to a target number of buyers in order to come in the green and thus fund future projects, the project itself is already funded from the get go and as long as people paid the $15 they've got themselves a copy.

Rather than wait for a game to be funded and built, and then purchased, this is effectively buyers hiring the developers to make the game they want. The budget has already been set (and eclipsed in this case), it markets itself, and they're already in the green. All that's left is to make the game for people to play.

I don't know if this business model could work for your $20m dude bro shooters, but if this is the way for me to get my space sim and old school WRPG, then hell yeah I'm for it.

Sorry I meant the game bombing, not the business model. If it's a terrible game, no one will be happy.

"Schafer is taking all of this in stride with his signature sense of humor when he Tweeted last night, "$955k! Guys, I'll make you a deal. If we hit $980k I'll add RTS elements to the game! And if we hit $1M, I'll take them back out!" Any time a developer can take the piss out of his own work - Brutal Legend - gets a thumbs up from me" http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/115746-Tim-Schafer-Raises-1-3-Million-Update-Again

They just broke $1.6 million with 44,985 backers.

Also, Schafer confirmed that it will be a 2D adventure game. There will be no Telltale-like 3D visuals.

Two things.

Firstly, Schafer has posted a thank you / update video, confirming the game will appear on PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android, will be fully voiced in English, and translated to French, Italian, German and Spanish. Beta phase will be distributed on Steam for all backers, and once released everybody will have access to a DRM free version.

And in other news, Brian Fargo is seriously considering using the same method as Double Fine to fund a reboot of Wasteland (he bought the IP rights back in 2003).

For those who don't know, Wasteland is an old school (1988!) post apocalyptic RPG, of which the Fallout series is considered a spiritual successor.

It also has the coolest box art of all time.

I want more Wasteland. So fucking much.

Spent so much of my childhood playing that game. My head would totally explode like a blood sausage if this was successful.

Just in time to board the Costa Concordia!

Glad to see other devs trying the Kickstarter though. Although I suspect it'll only be in favour for as long as it takes one company to fuck it up for everyone and not deliver their game.
