|

You can find the details here.
Double Fine wants to make an old school adventure game, only publishers wont back it. So they're skipping the middle man and going straight to the fans, looking for donations to fund both the entire development project, and a documentary that follows the process. The goal is $400,000.
Pledging a measly $15 gives you access to the full game upon release, a beta when it becomes available, regular documentary footage following the game's development process, and private forums where you can interact with the developers and critique their work, helping shape the project. Pledging more grants you numerous other bonuses, and if you're a rich son of a bitch you can look forward to such treats as dinner with the team and a portrait of yourself appearing in the game.
Click the link above to see the pledge page and all the details, and check out Double Fine's humorous project introduction below.
EDIT: Stupid embed code isn't working. Video can be seen via the link above. _________________

I thought those telltale games were doing pretty well, seems weird that they can't get funding. _________________

Love Kickstarter. Was all geared up to drop a project on it once and then realised it was for US only. Not sure if this has changed yet. There's a ripoff Aussie site though. http://www.pozible.com.au/
Sorry for offtopicness. The extended pledges on the website are pretty funny. $15 for the game plus extra stuff is awesome, too. This is what is possible if you cut out the middle man. Cheaper games, more fun for everybody involved, probably a much shorter wait for game release after it's completed, etc. _________________

Plus you get what you want. It's like, "We want to make X, fans want us to make X, but the industry we're a part of is preventing us from making X". It's a realisation of the "if I had tons of money I'd make this developer make that" fantasy I think all gamers humour.
Funny thing is this is the kind of stuff Newell has been talking about for years, the game industry changes to adopt new policies that allow consumers to directly fund the projects they want. Minecraft proved big money was in it, and this is going to set another example.
In less than three hours they've had $128,507 pledged. Over 1/4th if the target budget, with 33 days to go. I love seeing stuff like this. It's a great example of how modern technology can do something right, and not result in a robot apocalypse.
EDIT: Unless their game turns out to be about a robot apocalypse. _________________

First I was like "Hellz yeah I'll chip in $15"...
Then I was like "What, the payment process redirects to Amazon.com and I have to use a credit card? LOLZ. PayPal or fuck off."

I think you can pay outside of Amazon. Maybe not. I don't know, I just used my debit card.
Anyway, already half way in less than four hours. _________________

You just paid $150 for some signatures? That's the only difference between the $100 and $250 pledges.
Man, I miss having disposable income. _________________

Oh is that not what this is? I kinda assumed it was after the Psycho2 / Notch story. _________________

Man, I wish I had the $250 to get a posted signed by Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer. Sadly, I had to make do with the $15 reward of a copy of the game.
Edit: Just realised that I have until March 13 to alter my pledge and add to it if I want a higher tier. Awesome. _________________

The more amazing thing though - With an audience of 10,000 you can fund a game.
10,000.
Stick that up your publisher model. _________________

There would be way more than 10,000 people who would like to see a new Mega Man game. Hmmm. All I can say is that this success is an interesting sign for the future of the gaming industry. _________________

You know, maybe it's too much to ask.
But just once. Before PALGN goes down. I'd like to see admeister post in a non-Japanese thread without mentioning something Japanese. And that's not also Scott Pilgrim. _________________

Meh, it's what came to mind since a lot of people are lamenting the apparent death of the series. _________________

Capcom can suck my thick hairy chub if they try this shit, because they already tried something similar with Megaman Legends 3, making the community do work, then canning the project and trying to blame it on the community.
Fuck the shills at Crapcom. _________________

It's funny because i just saw this article yesterday on Gamasutra that relates to this awesome initiative.
http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/40199/DICE_2012_Is_the_publishing_model_broken.php
I'm pledging for this and i hope its a success because i would love nothing better than to see stupid publishers lose for once, just like we lose when they exert thier influence on game development.
Thanks Jarrod! and well done Double Fine!!!!! (i love Iron Brigade)
